The blog of the Ancient Mariner — 4 Comments

  1. Ever walk on a deck after the albatrosses have been by? That’s why he shot it.

  2. The Mariner shot the albatross because he could. To spit in the eye of God. To show his power over life and death.

It could be a male thing.

  3. What a memory, reading the Ancient Mariner, like you, in middle school, about the 8th grade as I recall. Quite symbolic of many of the changes I and all of us have undergone, and in due time we will find ourselves right in the middle, being neither too Liberal or too conservative, flexible, mature, compassionate yet realistic. I think you should compile all of this and write a book. Why not? You have your basic core of essays that you can embellish and maybe some of the commentary can be worked in as well. It wouldn’t have to be a thousand pages you know.

  4. I love your blog, and especially your Vietnam ruminations. I was born in the US and grew up in Israel, I was too young in the 60s, so even if I had been here, I wouldn’t have paid much attention. So I am learning a lot about that era now. Your writing is wonderful. My 16 year old son is a regular old conservative, he never stood the chance of changing sides. Many liberal friends accuse me of brainwashing him. So be it, I consider it passing on my values. Anyway he loves histroy, so I’ve been passing on your articles to him. I don’t know that he reads them all, but even if he reads a few, he is getting a viewpoint that isn’t being heard anywhere else. Of course you reference to theh Acient Mariner is great, just keep on writing.
