And across the pond, Rishi Sunak is the new British Prime Minister — 21 Comments

  1. The nugget i gleaned from the coverage is that he’s short. He always looks tall from all the camera angles. Just sayin.

  2. Huh? I’m here in the U.S. and to me “Asians” are the people of Asia, which includes Indians, Israelis, Syrians, Armenians, and Turks, among others. Why wouldn’t it?

  3. bof:

They are technically in Asia, but the word “Asians” without any other modifier is usually used in the US to mean people from the Far East such as Japan and China. Indians and Pakistanis are usually called South Asians. Your mileage may differ.

  4. I saw a video of him speaking glowingly about green initiatives, reducing carbon, etc. Unless I hear differently, he’s a disaster.

  5. Jimmy wrote, “Unless I hear differently, he’s a disaster.”

Oh he’s a solid disaster. Nobody makes the case better than Mark Steyn: https://youtu.be/5sJbYM5UEsU?t=728

That actually launches you in at a point where Steyn has some fun over Kamala Harris, and I hope that’ll be considered a bonus. The subsequent ~five minutes on Sunak are primo. And it’s worth watching well beyond that.

All in all, the British “elites” are as worthless as America’s. And really, it goes beyond the Anglosphere to Klaus Schwab, Ursula von der Leyen, Macron, Merkel, …

  6. what’s that line from the who ‘down with the new boss, same as the old boss’
now british leadership has been in ruts before from baldwin to chamberlain was no great shakes, but they seem incapable of recognizing leadership, they turned their nose at badoch for instance, maybe eventually they will realize their error,

  7. miguel cervantes,

“maybe eventually they will realize their error”

Too late, much too late for any belated realization to matter.

  8. I wonder if the people who object to using the term “American” for us United Statesians have similar objections to using “Asian” for Chinese and Japanese.

  9. I admit that it’s going to take me a while to get used to a British PM who is not Anglo-Saxon or at least adjacent. I wish him and the country well, however.
Watching his first address there in front of 10 Downing St., he seemed to make a reasonably good impression. It was not any kind of oration for the ages, but it could have been worse.

  10. Probably so, but may he wont dissapoint indian immigrants are the only ones that seem to espouse bourgeouis values

  11. He seems like maybe he could play the 15th Doctor when this job fails, I mean, he seems woke enough. God help us.

  12. Rishi Sunak, Rashi Sanuk. Bodega, bogeda. Let’s call the whole thing off.

  13. avi,

It’s my understanding that Benjamin D’Israeli was Jewish, rather than of asian ancestry.

  14. Geoffrey Britain:

I am pretty sure avi was making a joke, but the gist of it is a reference to the fact that plenty of people considered eastern European Jews either people of color or even “Asiatic.” Disraeli’s father converted to Christianity when Disraeli was a boy, but there was quite a bit of anti-Semitism towards the son anyway. Also, please see this sort of thing.

  15. }}} The article says he’s the first “Asian” British PM
}}} Sunak was born on 12 May 1980 at Southampton General Hospital in Southampton, Hampshire

And here’s one of the major issues with all the Western nations, these days:

    He’s fucking English, FFS.

He grew up there, and while he no doubt has a lot of understanding of the Indian culture, he is, first and foremost, a BRIT.

Americans certainly do this shit, too. Yes, we’ve always hyphenated most of our culture, it’s always still secondary to our being American:
    Irish-American
    Italian-American
    German-American
    Japanese-American
    NOT
    American-Irish
    American-Italian
    American-German
    American-Japanese

Nowadays people tend to drop the “American” completely.

Oh, and I’m going to point out — Benjamin Disraeli was Jewish

Most people don’t think of Israel as being in Asia, but it is. And that’s where Jews nominally hail from, even though Israel was a “former nation” when Disraeli was in power.

Easy to dismiss and argue against, no denials.

  16. }}} Oh, and I’m going to point out — Benjamin Disraeli was Jewish

Why, no, I hadn’t read all the comments when I wrote that.

    Why do you ask? 😀
