  1. Given all of the tornadoes spawned by Hurricane Ian and the extreme winds it produced, wouldn’t it be great to have a “meteorological smoke alarm” that will awaken you if you are in genuine danger?

For the first time, we have it. It is called StormWarn: https://survive-a-storm.com/stormwarn/

And, unless you are in the direct path of the storm, we let you sleep.

  2. Apparently in the field of particle physics, if a scientist wants to continue receiving grants and maintain a good standing within that “tribe,” he had best tow the line and join the lemmings, even if he truly believes the end result will be a dead end.

    See this:

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/sep/26/physics-particles-physicists

I will surmise the “group think” within that field of science is nursery school level compared to Stalinist / Orwellian group think that is demanded of anyone involved in the mythical saga of human caused climate change.

And how does one know that man-made climate change is a myth?
Because well before humans had any possible effect on climate – say, before 1700, the climate on earth swung between very cold and warm and back again…repeatedly.
The ONLY explanations you will find that attempt to explain all of these long-term shifts in climate involve celestial mechanics, the orbital mechanics of earth and the activity of the sun.
And the climate we are experiencing today is totally benign when looked at from a historical perspective.
Yes, volcanic activity can affect climate for a year or so, and a massive meteor strike can as well.
None of these possible causes are due to human activity.

But hey, when a non-falsifiable hypothesis is forwarded to explain something, it can be used to explain anything and everything.
    Surprise,surprise

  3. John Tyler, are you a skeptical “intelligent layman” like so many of us? Or are pretty deep into the details?
I’m finding the Winter Gatekeeper hypothesis fascinating but I’m a long ways from being expert enough to be able to evaluate it.
Perhaps the last non political pillar standing in support of global warming is “ALL scientists in that field agree”. But I read there’s a large group of scientists (hundreds? 1000?) who have an Open Letter saying AGW is not an emergency at least.

  6. @JohnTyler,

Sabine Hossenfelder has a great youtube channel. I don’t always agree with her, but she makes many good points.

Quite frankly, I think particle physics went off the rails with the introduction of quarks. Maybe someone will correct me (I’m an experimentalist who spent my time with high energy ion-molecule collisions), but my understanding is that quarks are really basis vectors for a “linear algebra” space of different arrangements of many of the particles know in mid-60s. It did clean up the chaos as it showed there is a definite order underlying much of the zoo of particles that show up in the experiments. There are now 6 quarks (and their anti-quarks), along with the 6 leptons. Looks nice, but the wrinkle is that, by the theory, quarks can never be directly observed. For an experimentalist, that as much as saying what the theorists have put out is bullpuckey. Again, I admit finding a basis sets for a space indicates something is going on in nature, but certainly not the whole story.

I firmly believe all this nonsense will disappear when a Newton or Einstein comes along and finds the connection between GR and QM. Until then, the physics of the very small and the very large will continue to flounder.

  9. Johnny Mathis recorded a song “Wasn’t the Summer Short?” in the late 50’s or early 60’s. The song reflects the poignant sense of fleeting time spent with a loved one. The haunting melody and words were written by a local radio/TV personality in Cincinnati, Ruth Lyons. I heard the song often as a child and could sing it now by heart.

  10. Susanamantha:

I don’t recall hearing “Wasn’t the Summer Short?” Nice.

Before reading wiki, I didn’t realize Mathis was such an interesting fellow. He has sold an estimated 400 million records, putting him third after Sinatra and Elvis. He was of black and Native American heritage. As a high jumper he competed successfully against basketball legend, Bill Russell, and was invited to try out for US Olympic team. As a golfer in later life, he hit nine holes-in-one. He was high school friends with Merl Saunders and Saunders gave Mathis his first chance as a singer. Mathis was also gay.

    I had no idea.

He is still alive, in case the past tense suggested otherwise.

  11. Power back on here in central NC, after 24.5 hours. We are grateful to the utility crews. This was an awful mess, but nothing like SW Florida. My pastor and his wife are en route to Fort Meyers to bring her elderly mother here. I-75 is closed just north of there today, so we are praying they can get through, and out again, and find hotel rooms.

  12. UFOs:

If anyone is interested in gaining a basic understanding of the major elements of the UFO phenomenon and it’s history since WWII, you might want to view a new, very up to date, full-length documentary on this subject titled simply, “The Phenomenon,” released just a day ago.

The well-done and researched documentary surveys developments since the end of WWII up to the present, gives information on more than a dozen prime UFO incidents—some of them major incidents I confess I’ve never heard about before–and discusses the history of the U.S. and other government’s response to this phenomenon.

In my opinion, it’s well worth taking the time to watch it.

  14. Today always makes me think of this book by astrophysicist Fred Hoyle, published in 1966.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_the_First_Is_Too_Late

The plot is a mess, the characters are simply that, and their conversations are disguised lectures, but his speculations about Time are intriguing (well, actually, kind of crazy).

@ physicsguy – “I think particle physics went off the rails with the introduction of quarks.”

Yeah, but talking about them is fun. They could be characters in a Hoyle book, or maybe a Disney movie: Strange, Charm, Up, Down, Top, and Bottom.

The physicists who decided to identify them by Flavor and Color were either drunk or high on something.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quark
“The quark model was independently proposed by physicists Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig in 1964. … The initial reaction of the physics community to the proposal was mixed. There was particular contention about whether the quark was a physical entity or a mere abstraction used to explain concepts that were not fully understood at the time.”

So, which is really the case? I’m not equipped to handle the explanations, as I only read physics books for their soporific value at night.

“Accelerator program experiments have provided evidence for all six flavors. The top quark, first observed at Fermilab in 1995, was the last to be discovered.[5]”

Gotta admit this next section is fun — although if there is that much controversy over just naming the things (despite their “founder’s” explanations), how much more controversy over what (or if) they really are?

For some time, Gell-Mann was undecided on an actual spelling for the term he intended to coin, until he found the word quark in James Joyce’s 1939 book Finnegans Wake:[49]

[AF – of course James Joyce had to be in there somewhere!]

    – Three quarks for Muster Mark!
Sure he hasn’t got much of a bark
And sure any he has it’s all beside the mark.

The word quark is an outdated English word meaning to croak[50] and the above-quoted lines are about a bird choir mocking king Mark of Cornwall in the legend of Tristan and Iseult.[51] Especially in the German-speaking parts of the world there is a widespread legend, however, that Joyce had taken it from the word Quark,[52] a German word of Slavic origin which denotes a curd cheese,[53] but is also a colloquial term for “trivial nonsense”.[54] In the legend it is said that he had heard it on a journey to Germany at a farmers’ market in Freiburg.[55][56] Some authors, however, defend a possible German origin of Joyce’s word quark.[57]

Gell-Mann went into further detail regarding the name of the quark in his 1994 book The Quark and the Jaguar:[58]

In 1963, when I assigned the name “quark” to the fundamental constituents of the nucleon, I had the sound first, without the spelling, which could have been “kwork”. Then, in one of my occasional perusals of Finnegans Wake, by James Joyce, I came across the word “quark” in the phrase “Three quarks for Muster Mark”. Since “quark” (meaning, for one thing, the cry of the gull) was clearly intended to rhyme with “Mark”, as well as “bark” and other such words, I had to find an excuse to pronounce it as “kwork”. But the book represents the dream of a publican named Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker. Words in the text are typically drawn from several sources at once, like the “portmanteau” words in Through the Looking-Glass. From time to time, phrases occur in the book that are partially determined by calls for drinks at the bar. I argued, therefore, that perhaps one of the multiple sources of the cry “Three quarks for Muster Mark” might be “Three quarts for Mister Mark”, in which case the pronunciation “kwork” would not be totally unjustified. In any case, the number three fitted perfectly the way quarks occur in nature.

Zweig preferred the name ace for the particle he had theorized, but Gell-Mann’s terminology came to prominence once the quark model had been commonly accepted.[59]

I’m tending toward the “curd cheese” myself.
The assignments of the other names are less fanciful, except for this:

Alternative names for bottom and top quarks are “beauty” and “truth” respectively,[nb 4] but these names have somewhat fallen out of use.[66] While “truth” never did catch on, accelerator complexes devoted to massive production of bottom quarks are sometimes called “beauty factories”.[67]

But, is there in Truth no Beauty?

  15. I noticed this curious time sequence, which indicates that, even if God does not play at dice with the universe, He has a great future as a comic writer.

“The quark model was independently proposed by physicists Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig in 1964.”

“October the First is Too Late” by astrophysicist Fred Hoyle was published in 1966.

“Is There in Truth No Beauty?” … was first broadcast on October 18, 1968.
(In the Star Trek Original Series episode, the Enterprise travels with an alien ambassador whose appearance induces madness. — and includes one of their trademark “strange swirling voids” far outside of their own galaxy.)

Is all good structure in a winding stair?

Is it no verse, except enchanted groves
And sudden arbours shadow coarse-spun lines?
Must purling streams refresh a lover’s loves?
Must all be veil’d, while he that reads, divines,
Catching the sense at two removes?

    Shepherds are honest people; let them sing;
    Riddle who list, for me, and pull for prime;
    I envy no man’s nightingale or spring;

OTOH…would be prudent to be skeptical…but time will tell…

  23. Here’s what bugs me about the Strzok dismissal: it seems like the loudest note was about appearances of partisanship, not what we can all so clearly see right now: the distortion of proper FBI goals by Democrat partisanship.

‘ The extra spending will come while President Joe Biden blames Republicans for the national deficit and inflation, noted Bartiromo, but Turner said it’s clear to see how out of control Democrat spending has been under his White House….’

  29. Food for thought. Some questions from a friend about all electric cars. Passing it along FYI:
“Many folks are evacuating Florida. They have to drive far enough to get out of the path of the storm. Hundreds of thousands of cars on the roads, all at one time.

So, what if all the cars and trucks were electric? As bad as it is now, what would it be like then?

By the time they got to Jacksonville or Valdosta, they would all need to be recharged. How long would they have to wait for a spot at a recharging station? After spending three to four hours on the road, if they made it to the recharging station for a three-hour recharge, would the storm have caught up with them? Where would the electricity come from to charge all these vehicles, since Jacksonville and Valdosta would be waiting for the sun to shine (the wind would certainly be blowing!) and there would not be enough storage batteries to charge them all? What if they got in the traffic jam of all traffic jams and were stranded on the road? How would AAA get to them with a recharging truck (with a gas generator on it)? How could the traffic jam be resolved after waiting for thousands of cars to be charged? A how many cars could be charged before the AAA trucks had to return to base to be recharged themselves? The stranded cars would have no air conditioning, no wipers, no radio, no GPS. The cell towers would be overloaded with calls until the phone batteries were dead. No rescue vehicles could access the needy.

Those affected would unlikely think about CO2 savings at that point, knowing that China and India were at that very moment building many new coal-fired power plants to fuel their growing economies. How long would it take the U.S. to change policies and to build the needed gas or nuclear power plants? How many people would die waiting?

Where would all the dead electric car batteries be buried?

We are headed for a self-made disaster. Wake up to the realities of mandatory electric vehicles! There is no plan to deal with these issues. One might even suspect that this disaster IS the plan…….. The democrats are like lemmings following their leaders over the cliff.”

  30. My friend Kiki, whom I met via neo’s blog, introduced me to a substack writer, eugyppius, so I subscribed and read his entries. Today:

Germany Spends 2.5 Billion Euros on 100 Million Bivalent Boosters Only To Discover That Nobody Wants Them

    https://www.eugyppius.com/p/germany-spends-25-billion-euros-on
    ____________________________

This is a new vaxx called bivalent because it works against Original Covid and the New Omicron Covid. It’s a desert topping and a floor wax!

I haven’t paid much attention to the vaxx controversy. It looked like an intractable, muddy discussion. I’m vaxxed and boosted because I had to be for school. The first J&J was all right. The Pfizer booster knocked me out — fatigue — for a couple days.

The article made me curious about the adverse reactions to the vaccines. So I googled and the top-line results which turned up were all bland sites toeing the official line. (Google is clearly censoring anti-vaxx viewpoints.) Such as this from the AARP:

    https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2020/coronavirus-vaccine-research.html

Well and good. Be a good comrade and get your shots.

However, you check the comment section and all hell breaks loose. In addition to myocarditis, which the official line even concedes as a rare possibility, commenters report all sorts of unpleasant reactions, even fatalities. Liver disease, kidney disease, eyesight problems, overwhelming fatigue, brain fog, tinnitus, even hair loss.

Some of these may be discounted as coincidences, but it seems like a lot of coincidences.

I buy the argument that the vaccines have been effective at reducing the severity of Covid infections and saved some lives. But how all that balances out in the Big Picture and how individuals should decide the trade-offs, I don’t know.

It’s clear the government, medical authorities and Big Tech have been less than forthcoming and consistent in their mandates, leaving the public in the lurch.

  31. Quite frankly, I think particle physics went off the rails with the introduction of quarks.

    physicsguy:

I understand your point. I’m not sure how physicists claim to have proven the existence of the various quarks, but from what I read it would take nearly unimaginable amounts of energy to actually experiment on quarks, as we do with the standard subatomic particles.

However, the real problem IMO is the groupthink and academic feudalism which has become the norm of the scientific community.

If quarks, string theory and climate change were just a few theories among many available in a vibrant scientific landscape, they wouldn’t be a problem.

  32. Have they proven quarks are real or are they just theoretical constructs what does it mean?

  33. “I buy the argument that the vaccines have been effective at reducing the severity of Covid infections and saved some lives.”

BUT this COULD have been achieved using existing, readily available, relatively inexpensive, and PROVEN drugs—hydrochloroquine + zinc, quercetin + zinc, and especially ivermectin—WITH FAR FEWER, IF ANY, SIDE EFFECTS!!!

That these proven drugs were pooh-poohed, ridiculed, misrepresented, lied about CONSTANTLY and CONSISTENTLY—and that those doctors who authorized and recommended them were OSTRACIZED, THREATENED and TOSSED OUT OF THEIR JOBS (together with ALL the lies and coverups bout the ORIGINS of the virus, together with the DEMAND from Pfizer that no Covid-vaccine history be divulged for 75 years (just another coverup), together with ALL the money that has been made by those doing the coverups, not to mention the drug companies) tells one ALL one NEEDS to know about the enormous dimensions of this scandal.

The big question/mystery for me (not just for me, obviously) is why some people are so adversely afflicted with side effects while other—at least for now (and let’s hope it stays that way) SEEM—not to be….

One ought be forgiven for concluding that this is part of a larger plan of elites to foist groupthink amongst and total control over vast populations.

  35. @ huxley > “Germany Spends 2.5 Billion Euros on 100 Million Bivalent Boosters Only To Discover That Nobody Wants Them”

Combined with all the purchases of the first round of vaccines, their boosters, the liability exemptions and other red flags, it’s hard not to conclude that all of this is directed toward enriching the elites — crony capitalism is NOT a free market economy.
    It gets close to fascism.

“And I remind you that the best definition of fascism, in my view, is a coordinated state-corporate system which works to silence all opposition to an autocratic government.”

  36. }}} This snip from an article indicates how the war is escalating

I’ve known Tom for years. Smart guy.

  37. Physicsguy:

}}} Looks nice, but the wrinkle is that, by the theory, quarks can never be directly observed. For an experimentalist, that as much as saying what the theorists have put out is bullpuckey.

This is not true, I’d assert. You can “prove” them by predicting effects they should produce under defined circumstances. Likewise, you can also disprove them, by the same mechanism.

Think Lumniferous Aether. It was, like quarks, invisible, intangible, and permeated all. And it filled all the requirements of “how light propagated”.

So it was a theory. Then along came Michealson and Morley, and showed that an expected behavior if the Aether existed failed to show up.

Q.E.D., the eventual result was that Aether was dead as a concept.

    Another track:

You can’t see most of the electromagnetic spectrum, but you can make inferences about certain aspects of it — that in the heat range will “heat” objects. That in the radio range affects wires. And thus you can “prove” they exist by noting their effects on other things. That is, after all, how we actually do things. It’s not like we can actually see anything but what our eyes and skin shows us. Radio? Whut Dat? Clearly, though, they exist, or the “magic” would not work — cell phones, TVs, broadcast radio.

The essential “proof” of quarks (for whatever value of “proof” Science ever allows for) would be in something they fit well and for which there was no other known explanation.

Yes, it could, in the end, turn out to be another LAether, but ya gotta start somewhere… 😀

P.S.:Beware of quantum ducks… Quark! Quark!!
    😀

  38. }}} “Las Vegas shooting: Former officer reflects on 5 years since 58 people shot dead at country festival”—

As horrible as that had to have been… Seriously?

Think back across most of human history… If humans were that fragile, we would never have made it out of Africa. We are descended from much much sterner stuff. The weakest of us are all descended from many many ancestors who survived much much more horrific experiences.

I do not believe that a couple generations of massively improved conditions can erase millennia of genetic erasures of anyone who could not face far far worse.

In no sense do I mean that in any cold, uncompassionate sense it might suggest. There is no question that had to be a truly horrible day, just as 911 was, for anyone involved.

I am saying: we are ALL made of sterner stuff… Our ancestors HAD to be.

  39. }}} although if there is that much controversy over just naming the things

    Scientists are humans, too.

    One word: “Pluto”.
    😀

  40. }}} But, is there in Truth no Beauty?

I always preferred the Truth/Beauty nyms myself. They FEEL right for Science, which is always, first and foremost, a search for both.

Top and Bottom sounds like some S&M games quarks play. 😀

  41. }}} (the wind would certainly be blowing!)

Not necessarily positive… Wind turbines are designed to max out at a certain speed… and if the wind goes TOO high, they brake down and lock the whole thing. I can’t recall for sure, but I seem to remember that they lock down somewhere around 40mph, which is waaaay below hurricane speeds.
