  1. @Barry Meislin: Manchin did not look all that happy at the signing ceremony, and that look and handshake from Biden was pretty creepy. And where was Sinema? Oh, right: hanging out with the boys from Greenwich.

  2. We have CDs of her music. There’s a Youtube of remarkable clarity of the recording sessions at which “I’ll Never Find Another You” was produced. Cannot be topped.

The memorials to her have been issued piecemeal since her death rather than all at once. Not sure what that means.

  3. On this near 1 year anniversary of the Afghanistan debacle, here’s a great summary of what has happened to the $7billion worth of military equipment left behind by our wonderful president. No real surprises, but it just emphasizes the CF that happened there:

  4. @JD Keene re Gas Prices:

Here are some highlights from a NY Post piece:

“Gas prices have fallen for multiple reasons, but Americans cutting back on consumption is the major factor,” Anthony Schiavo, an analyst at Boston-based Lux Research, told The Post.

Schiavo cited government data which showed that demand for gas dropped to 8.857 million barrels per day during the four-week period that spanned July. That number is much lower than last year’s number of 9.456 million barrels per day during the same time period.

Sky-high gas prices and record levels of inflation have spurred Americans to change their driving habits, according to AAA.

  5. The switch to summer blend also affects gas prices, winter blends are more expensive to produce.

  6. Re gas prices. U.S. refineries are running flat out at 98%. They can’t keep it up, but it has had an effect on supply. Add less demand (driving less) and some jawboning from Biden equals lower prices. We are in recession now. Prices will stay lower as long as demand doesn’t increase. Hopefully, if the GOP gets control of both House and Senate in November, the war on oil might be blunted somewhat. It’ll take a Republican president to get us out of the supply hole and get the economy rolling again.

  7. Re gas prices , I agree with most of above . We are in a recession , in recession u get demand destruction . Car repos are way up as well, no car no gas. Next time u buy gas , check the pumps . Many will be for $5.00 worth or 3 gallons. Poor folks are getting killed by this. FJB.

  8. re: gas prices, I’m sure there are many reasons including those given above but two reasons I’ve seen cited are

    1) World economy has slowed, less demand for oil, price of oil has dropped from over $100 to somewhere in the $80’s range

    2) Biden Admin has pumped substantial amounts of oil out of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, causing prices to fall.
Later, they will refill the SPR with … yes … higher priced oil bought on the open market.

  9. Art Deco: That has long been my favorite recording of I’ll Never Find Another You.

  10. Mad Scientist Launches Rocket to Mars!

Ok, maybe not this year. And the ground-breaking Space X Raptor 2 rocket engine hasn’t lifted anything into orbit yet.

NASA has spent decades and billions of dollars building the SLS rocket for the return to manned lunar missions. Turns out their mission will not include a lander. A second or third rocket will launch separately which will transport the lander.

SpaceX is one of the companies being to be considered transporting the lander, at a fraction of the cost by our government efforts. We should be thankful the government never decided to get into the car business.

It’s all pretty impressive. To the Moon and Beyond!

  11. Our generation has lost another of its lights.

Some songs and voices are inseparable.

  12. Visited Vicksburg battleground today; Gray and rainy. Occurred to me that Union dead as a proportion of our current population would be about six and a half million. If it were allowed they died to end slavery, the burden of gratitude would be unsupportable. Thus, it .must not be addressed.
For comparison’s sake, WWII dead would be about one million dead in our current population.

  13. I’d forgotten that both of the Seekers biggest hits, this and Georgy Girl, were both written by Dusty Springfield’s brother Tom.

  14. }}} The switch to summer blend also affects gas prices, winter blends are more expensive to produce.

This may have affected the initial push up, but the timing is wrong for causing it to got down.

}}} Musicians used to wear suits and ties on stage — who knew?

Ummmm… Any early Beatles fan? 😀
