Snuck in a round of golf today. Upper 60’s temps, sunshine, was glorious. My game, not glorious, but it’s still early.
Maxine Waters is safe in her position. The voters there keep putting her in office – incumbents rarely lose – and there’s nothing the rest of us can do about her. The Democrat leadership looks the other way when she goes off like this; I suspect that is due in part to their support for what she is trying to do.
I like “The Apartment” better than “Psycho”. “Psycho” was a landmark but not my favorite Hitchcock. Now consider all the magnificent films made by both those directors (Hitchcock and Billy Wilder) compared to what we have today.
I saw “The Apartment” for the first time a few years ago. Wonderful film. It’s a coin toss between the two films, IMO.
TommyJay, I looked at the link which is from Breitbart and it is pretty intelligent, not just the knee-jerk iconoclasm implied by the title.
While I wouldn’t exactly call “Psycho” overrated I think it is somewhat sensationalistic and not as consistently entertaining as other Hitch films such as “The Birds” (which many people don’t like), “North By Northwest” and “Strangers On A Train”. Though of course it is brilliant in maintaining tension and suspense. Wilder made numerous legendary films including “Double Indemnity”, “Sunset Boulevard”, and “Some Like It Hot” just for starters.
I think The Apartment is the greater achievement in filmmaking, but Psycho probably had a bigger impact on Hollywood and American culture. I’ve seen the Wilder greats you list many times, and some of the lesser works; Ball of Fire, Avanti, Irma la Douce, Kiss Me Stupid, Ace in the Hole, and others.
I still have not seen “Ace In The Hole” but my understanding is that it is a devastating putdown of the “news” business – made in 1951!
