How to pose in photos — 6 Comments

  1. I don’t think it needs a dance background, but just a couple, simple instructions, and awareness the camera is pointed at you. As a photographer one learns to make the best of all inexperienced subjects in a portrait situation. A twist here, hand placement there. No touch instructions only. That’s what we’re paid to do.
I was at a race in TX where they had models for everything. I came across a small group of them off camera doing what people do “off duty”. Yes, they were above average in looks, but not stunners. Then someone asked them for a photo. They snapped into poses, and turned from non-stunners to drop-dead-gorgeous group of young women, instantly. Seeing that one-second transition was truly unbelievable.
Yeah, I know I’ve said everything wrong about women – commenting on looks, objectifying, etc. In my defense, models sell their looks, and their looks sell product. I should be able to appreciate their craft.
    Let the beatings begin…

  2. Quite interesting! Reminds me of martial arts quite a bit. And people with dance backgrounds tend to learn the basics of martial arts movement quicker than most.

I was however kid of hoping for a tip to make my bean pole build look a little better in pictures. My wife always says my pictures make me look ‘funny’. But not ha-ha funny.

  3. Something activities like dance, acting, and to some degree, sports, does is create a self awareness of your own body, its parts, how it’s arranged, how it works and what it looks like from various positions and poses.

Models know their “strong points” because they’ve taken the time to work with photographers, study pictures of themselves and other models, and figure out (or have it explained to them) what works best for them and, just as important, what specific positions and poses convey.

  4. I seldom go to video links on other blogs, but I often will here – neo, you do such a good job of curating interesting video content that the slowness of the form doesn’t bug me. This was very interesting!

But I have two challenges. First, I have to remember what she said. Second, I have to get my flailing limbs to cooperate.

  5. Wowww. Yes. Lots of jam packed helpful snapshot taking and model making better photo sustaining info, here. Mega THANKS!
