The Congressional GOP… — 9 Comments

  1. Its a bad move on Toomey’s part. The Toomey-Manchin ‘deal’ is lipstick on the pig of Schumer’s bill. This is a gift to the democrats.

  2. Let’s see….. WSJ editorial board (pro-amnesty, tea partiers are hobbits) vs Mike Lee and Ted Cruz.
    No contest.

  3. The tactics certainly are dumb.

Must be because the strategy hasn’t been agreed on. Cruz, I think, wants almost no gun regulations, and McConnell is probably up for quite a few. And so we end up with this darn seat-of-pants incompetence.

  4. Most can’t define strategy or tactics or what is the difference

The same people like to make up strategies that have no tactical way of working without despotism

    🙂

  5. I have no idea if this guy’s right or not, if this is fictional or actual, but he’s been right before:

The idea is that Dems are using this it divide the tea party from the old dogs and that if the senate passes a “reasonable compromise”, the House can be framed as intransigent and extremist when they don’t pass it.

Also, it looks like Toomey got something out of the deal:

    http://theulstermanreport.com/2013/04/11/toomeys-shame-gun-control-group-drops-attack-after-republican-senator-makes-deal-with-dems/

No idea if any of this is right, but this may be a question of strategy 1 vs. strategy 2 instead of strategy vs no strategy.

When I’m not sure which strategy would be best, I tend to favor the one that cedes the least ground. The Dems are naturally way better at this stuff and they have the ever-friendly media to frame things for them. This doesn’t make trapping them by giving them what they want impossible, but it does make it harder.

Besides, isn’t that how we got the income tax?

  6. I like to say that if you know that sometimes losing a battle …or three …can be the sole reason for winning the war, you have a good grasp on the difference between the merely tactical, and the brilliantly strategic.

…not that the GOP has ever impressed upon me their ability to execute either.
