Extreme exercise — 10 Comments

  1. Last night I danced wildly for less than three minutes. It was too much for my heart. Or at least that’s how it felt.

Me? More and more I’m going along with George Saunders who said, “Whenever I feel the urge to exercise, I simply lie down until it passes.”

  2. How much is too much is very basically covered by this article, along with some other ideas. Now, that is for men. I would honestly conceive that women may well have a very different set of limits.

Is saying that men and women are different taboo here? I could have asked first, but what is the old saying about asking? Never mind.

  3. I have looked into exercise anonymous, call a friend, he comes over and gets drunk with you til the urge to exercise passes.

  4. I guess my goose is cooked. Never ran a marathon, but engaged in long distance cross country skiing as well as hard mountain climbs (example: Yosemite Valley to the top of Half Dome and return in 12 hours.) up to the age of 55. Since then I’ve mostly been a gym rat. Presently three days a week I work at a heart rate of 109-138 for forty-five minutes and one day a week I exceed my max heart rate for my age of 144 for several minutes. If it’s true that the heart only has so many beats in it for a life time, my limit must be getting close. But then, as one commenter said at the link, “Life is hazardous to your health.” Or some such. Yep, it’s 100% fatal. Or has been so far.

What we do know is that our ancestors had to move to live. Our bodies are still adapted to that. However, given the trend of things, we may be adapting to a new modality of sedentary living. Puts me in mind of a Sci Fi drama that depicted aliens from a planet where machines did all the work. They had tiny bodies and huge heads. Maybe that’s where we’re headed…….eventually.

Today was my gym day so I’ve got to go rest now.

  5. As my wife and I pass through our 50s, we are both very grateful that routine, vigorous exercise a few times a week has been a constant in our lives. Aside from the cardiovascular payoff, we enjoy the ability to do so many things that our contemporaries or even younger friends are simply incapable of doing.

For the overwhelming majority of us, “extreme” exercise as described here is simply not a characteristic that we need to worry about. Exercise is good and has its’ benefits.

  6. After trying for years I finally managed 100+ curls with a 15 lb. dumbbell in each hand. Result, the discovery that too vigorous an exercise can cause a gout attack.

  7. Thanks for your publication on this weblog. From my own personal experience, there are times when
softening up a photograph may possibly provide the professional photographer with
a little bit of an inventive flare. Often however, that
soft clouds isn’t just what exactly you had under consideration and can quite often spoil an otherwise good image, especially if you thinking about enlarging the item.

  8. My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find almost all of your post’s to be just what I’m looking for.
can you offer guest writers to write content for yourself?
I wouldn’t mind writing a post or elaborating on some of the subjects you write regarding here. Again, awesome weblog!

  9. Greetings from Florida! I’m bored to tears at work so I decided to check out your website on my iphone during lunch break. I really like the info you present here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home.

I’m surprised at how fast your blog loaded on my mobile .. I’m not even using WIFI,
just 3G .. Anyhow, very good blog!
