Balancing the Israel/Palestine scale requires lies — 29 Comments

  1. An “l” slipped into a “word.” I’m pretty sure that’s a typo, but I kinda’ like it that way.

“That’s why they were so very eager to take Hamas’ world for the hospital bombing.”

  2. Joe Biden is on the side of Israel’s enemy, plain as day:

US President Joe Biden says, “There’s no going back to the status quo as it stood on October 6.”

“That means ensuring that Hamas can no longer terrorize Israel and use Palestinians civilians as human shields. It also means that when this crisis is over, there has to be a vision of what comes next, and in our view it has to be a two-state solution,” he says in a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

  3. Neo: “The Peace Process is dead. It always was a fiction . . .”

Yes, it always was a fiction; it was really a “we, the PLO, Hamas, (whatever the latest name for that evil is) are losing so we need to pretend to a cease fire/peace process so that we can re-group.”

And that Israel so many times tried it shows how much Israelis just want to live in peace and be left alone.

  4. “To maintain such fictions it was necessary for the MSM to lie and to obscure. – And the fact that they were exposed as the liars they are will not stop them from doing it again and again, as they’ve done for decades.”

To lie is to knowingly tell an untruth with the intent to deceive. It is an attack upon the truth. Given the special privileges that the media operates under, it is a form of perjury.

At base, it is an attempt to prevail through cheating and an implicit admission that the position they support cannot stand upon its own merits.

They condemn themselves out of their own mouths.

  5. The Melanie Phillips interview led me to this remarkable interview of a young woman who miraculously survived the attack on the music festival. She’s obviously a hippie but has a few choice words for the Gaza sympathizers in the west. Among other things she points out that there were thousands of Gazan “civilians” raping, killing, and looting in addition to the Hamas operatives. 22 minutes but easily followed at 1.5x.

  6. As Neo said yesterday, there is far too much in the news to take it all in.
The pundits outnumber us 100 to 1.
Thanks to Neo and the Salon here for narrowing down the flow and pointing out so many important posts that bear reading, although there is not enough time and space for the full discussion many of them deserve.

However, in keeping with the topic if this post, here is an entry for the Gaslighting and Goal-post Moving Olympics.

The author addresses the Kisin post “The Day the Delusions Died,” which we’ve previously considered, and the Sowell world-view in his 1987 book, A Conflict of Visions.
    He doesn’t like them.
Examples of one obfuscation technique (there are others):
“Just four paragraphs into Kisin’s piece, the reader is already knee-deep in fallacies. For one thing, no progressive with any political power has called for the complete elimination of all economic inequality.”

Throwing Bernie and Friends under the bus?

“The spectacle of putative progressives cheering an Islamist group’s mass murder of Jewish children certainly heightened these contradictions.
Of course, a rational liberal observer would recognize that such moral idiocy was confined to a small minority of the left, one with negligible political power.

Throwing The Squad under the bus?

That said, he raises questions (literally) that should be addressed, in order to clarify his spin and thereafter either refute it or correct errors that actually might exist in Kisin’s work (possibly) or Sowell’s (unlikely) — or even revise one’s own opinions, if so inclined.

  7. @ Barry – I linked this in another thread, but I believe it is very encouraging.

The Civilian Hub’s activities have also led to previously unthinkable dialogue with some of those who staunchly opposed organizations such as Brothers in Arms before the war broke out.

Israel Cohen, an ultra-Orthodox journalist, visited the hub and then wrote on X, “Wow! This group of patriots for Israel has established a crazy monster (of an operation) that’s helping the wounded, and soldiers, locating the missing, and helping families from the south. And it’s all completely voluntary. Kudos!”

Also writing on X, right-wing Channel 12 TV political correspondent Amit Segal said he left the hub thinking, “How much strength this nation has, how much courage.”

Yishai Cohen, an ultra-Orthodox journalist for the Haredi news site Kikar Shabbat, who refused for six months to talk to members of Brothers in Arms, interviewed tech entrepreneur and Brothers in Arms co-founder Noam Lanir this week. “If you told me two weeks ago that I’d sit with you for a conversation, I would say, Wake up from the dream, and quickly,” he began.

Last week he visited the situation room at Beit Kama, where he saw Brothers in Arms and Orthodox Israelis working together to get boxes out to those in need. “After nine months of hate, we’ve understood that we are brothers,” he said.

    I hope these feelings last.

  8. Lies by omission.
    https://www.dailywire.com/news/abc-nbc-cbs-give-zero-airtime-to-pro-hamas-squad-dems-following-terrorist-attacks

The broadcast networks’ evening newscasts between Oct. 7 – Oct. 22 have not reported on a single comment or action made by the anti-Israel Democrats, allowing them to escape scrutiny from the public and presenting a false image that Democrats are unified in their support of Israel, according to a new study from the Media Research Center.

Analysts said that despite the networks giving a total of 525 minutes of air time to discuss what’s been happening in Gaza and with Israel, not not one of three broadcast networks made a single mention of the “Squad” Democrats’ numerous actions and remarks against Israel. The study included these seven members of the group: Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Summer Lee (D-PA).

Such remarks include “calling Israel apartheid,” “accusing Israel of war crimes,” and not “cosigning” an “anti-Hamas resolution.” Following the attack on October 7, the study found that not one of the broadcast evening news mentioned that Omar joined Bush and Tlaib in calling on Congress to cease military aid for Israel.

On October 11, a resolution was introduced which affirmed support of Israel and condemned Hamas’s “barbaric” attack. Not one of those 7 Squad members signed it and that was never mentioned on CBS, ABC or NBC.

Omar, Bush and Tlaib all repeatedly promoted the lie blaming Israel for bombing a hospital inside Gaza, which was actually the result of a rocket misfired by Hamas hitting a parking lot, not a hospital. Again, none of this was reported by those three news broadcasts.

On October 17, Tlaib tweeted the false claim and it remains on X at the time of this publication.

  9. If you still read Foreign Affairs, you can stop now.
    https://freebeacon.com/biden-administration/in-foreign-affairs-essay-national-security-adviser-jake-sullivan-said-biden-has-de-escalated-crises-in-gaza-then-he-erased-the-evidence/

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan boasted in a Foreign Affairs essay that the White House “de-escalated crises in Gaza”—then made substantial revisions after Hamas’s terrorist rampage in early October sparked a war.

The print edition of National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s Foreign Affairs piece, titled “The Sources of American Power,” outlines how the Biden administration’s “foreign policy for a changed world” is leading to a “freer and more stable world.” Sullivan particularly praises Biden for helping to bring peace to the Middle East.

“The Israeli-Palestinian situation is tense, particularly in the West Bank,” Sullivan wrote, “but in the face of serious frictions, we have de-escalated crises in Gaza and restored direct diplomacy between the parties after years of its absence.”

That was one of several lines removed or altered in the online version of Sullivan’s piece in light of Hamas’s Oct. 7 invasion of Israel, which left 1,300 Israelis dead. The original version seems to have gone to print prior to the attack, and appeared in the print edition of the magazine released Wednesday.

Publications rarely allow an author to make substantial changes after a piece has been sent to print, revisions are generally reserved for factual errors. But the digital edits to Sullivan’s piece are immense, and undermine his original argument that Biden is forging peace in the Middle East.

    https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/history/articles/when-americas-democratic-socialists-proudly-supported-israel
“For decades, the DSA and its predecessors, and socialist leaders like Michael Harrington and Bayard Rustin, championed the Jewish state and defended Jews on campus. In 2017, the DSA embraced Jew-hatred.”

That was only 6 years ago.

Good companion piece to the history in the above post.
    https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1717165815181480280.html

What’s the deal with leftist Western Jews and gays supporting Hamas and the Palestinians, who would absolutely murder them without remorse, if it could? It goes back to the Soviet incubation of oppression theology in Western academia.
The Soviets used Marxist theory to teach “resistance” groups to set aside their differences and work together against their common class and ideological enemies, the capitalist oppressors. Worldwide socialism was presented as a brotherhood.
Supposedly all these groups were brothers and sisters under the skin, because they were all oppressed by capitalism and imperialism. Socialism and communism were peddled as great unifying forces that would bring them together against their class enemies in a worldwide struggle.

This had the happy benefit of teaching Western dupes not to dwell on the imperialist, racist, and authoritarian tendencies of the Soviet empire itself. “No enemies on the Left!” they taught, giving Moscow a free pass for every imperial action it took.

This aspect of oppression theology casts a very long shadow. Young leftists today are taught to look at all oppressed resistance groups as brothers – even those which not only threaten favored left-wing constituencies, but actively persecute and kill them.
This is the seed of the growing alliance between the hard Left and radical Islam, which violently opposes a great deal of what the Left supposedly stands for. These two authoritarian ideologies have a few big things in common, like their penchant for speech codes.
Oppression theology slots brown Islamic people into the “victim” role, even though Islamic governments are almost always oppressive on a scale that should make leftists take up arms against them, and quite a few of those governments are run by filthy rich oil magnates.
For today’s leftist, the important thing is banding together with the oppressed Palestinians to fight white Jewish capitalist oppression. They are willing to give their Resistance allies a pass on all that “throwing gays off of buildings” stuff.

  12. As the post-mortem analyses continue to pour in…
This one, which could have been written by Wretchard, happens to be particularly apt (but read also the comment by Mr. McKee):

    “Israel’s illusion of security;
“Military technology has become a false idol”—
    https://archive.md/w3klc

(Remains to be seen whether the antidote has been (or can be) implemented in time…)

  13. “…then suddenly…”

So how did we get here?

    “The tyranny of pathological kindness;
“The cruel streak in progressivism has become dominant”—
    https://unherd.com/2023/10/the-tyranny-of-pathological-kindness/
    Key grafs (RTWT):
‘…Acts of kindness bear witness to our shared suffering. But when kindness becomes pathological, it is cruel and divisive — as with [the above] examples. And it is on the rise. In the West today, there are people whose suffering is deemed to be non-existent or of little value, and so judgement takes the place of understanding, punishment that of mercy. The result is a purity spiral whereby extreme kindness towards an in-group gives unlimited licence to act with cruelty towards an out-group. It’s this licence that gives progressive activists permission to clothe antisemitism as anti-colonialism.

‘ Following the Hamas massacre, a lecturer at Stanford University used “identity-based targeting” to force three Jewish students to stand in a corner so they could feel “what Israel does to Palestinians”. He asked them how many Jews died in the Holocaust. One of the students said “six million” and the lecturer replied that “colonizers killed more than 6 million. Israel is a colonizer”. In New York, activists tore down posters pleading for the safe release of Jewish hostages, many of them women and children, while London saw a 1,353% increase in antisemitic attacks.

In the intersectional narrative inhaled by activists, kindness for the “oppressed” legitimises unspeakable cruelty against the “oppressor”….’
    [All emphasis mine; Barry M.]

    And so, here we are…
(Though I don’t think the author gives enough “credit” or credence to the massive lying and propaganda mainstreamed and amplified via the media and, especially, social media.)

  14. And might the experiences and conclusions regarding THIS author’s intense Dantesque journey into the vortex of faith provide an explanation of a sort…to the conundrum—almost RELIGIOUS(?)—described in the exposition on the “progressivist” cult in my previous comment…

    “Reverend Pilavachi’s irresistible charisma;
“My faith left me with an awful, gnawing hollowness”—

    https://twitter.com/vdhanson/status/1717256162134184256
    H/T Powerline blog.
    Concluding grafs (RTWT):
‘…So yes, much of the acclaim for Hamas is not just found in its ferocious barbarity, but also fueled by a feeling that the killers are “winning” the propaganda war. Thus their cowardly but useful idiots of the West increasingly ally with the “oppressed” oppressor that can both butcher and claim victimhood simultaneously—and not only get away with it, but win global support for it.

‘And this is all the more reason why Israel must crush and thereby humiliate Hamas—as a lesson to its numerous enemies that the price for butchering innocents will always be too steep for even mass murderers to pay.’

Professor Hanson clearly articulates why massive—and DECISIVE—“pedagogical” response is required in the current case.
And no, this point, is nowhere near understood by the usual suspects…

  16. FWIW (but don’t tell Queen Rania…not that she’d believe it in any event…)

“A Gaza resident who was told to leave before IDF strikes says Hamas is blocking roads and shooting those attempting to leave.”—

…Since, apparently, American troops can’t, per “Biden”, defend themselves.
(And NOT forgetting, either, “Biden”‘s sincere and concerted efforts to PROTECT American troops—and others—during the Afghanistan debacle…)

Opening grafs (to this gobsmackingly pernicious absurdity, the true intentions of which should be obvious):
“Israel has agreed to delay its impending ground invasion of Gaza until the U.S. can establish air defenses to protect U.S. troops throughout the region.
“The Pentagon has requested that Israel hold off until they can deploy nearly a dozen air-defense systems to the region, the Wall Street Journal first reported. The missile deployments, which are expected to be completed in the coming days, are intended to shield U.S. troops serving in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates from enemy rockets and missiles….”

“Hold off” meaning what, exactly? (Forever and a day, perhaps?)

    And Israel has, apparently, agreed…but two can play the same game…as in;
    “No, we’re not invading…it’s just a ‘pre-invasion’…”

To be sure, “Biden” has some leverage that he can use.

  20. State of the Nation…or…Where We Stand:

    “Warfare by Immigration”—
    https://americanmind.org/salvo/warfare-by-immigration/
    H/T Powerline blog.
    Key grafs:
‘…China’s support today of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Islamic Republic of Iran demonstrates their role as leader of a global Communist movement, allied with the Islamic World, which seeks to destroy America and the West. They have little reason to doubt that they are winning. In London, 100,000 protestors, most of them Muslim immigrants, defended the attack by Hamas on Israel. American cities have seen similar displays.

‘ It bears repeating for this generation that the goal, now as then, is the destruction of the West. Israel was, and is, an outpost of the West and a defender of human freedom. Terrorist campaigns to destroy Israel were useful to animate certain parts of the Islamic world on behalf of the protracted war the Communists were waging against human freedom. These were once well-understood features of the ideological and political war between the Soviet Union and the United States. They have somehow been forgotten.

‘ Indeed, the very idea of the West has largely been abandoned. At its best, the West presented to the world an intellectual defense of freedom of the mind, freedom of religion, and the freedom of peoples to determine how they would govern themselves. It represented man’s highest aspirations….

‘ Although these beliefs are still held by the American people, they appear to have largely been rejected by U.S. elites. Witness the rejection of American principles in the modern university and the administrative state that runs our country.

‘ The difference between the Cold War and today is that the Soviets and the Chinese could not, back then, contemplate a United States that would open its borders to millions of people from all over the planet, regardless of their country of origin or political views. There was always immigration of course, including illegal immigration…. The opening of the U.S. border today reveals an America engaged in a kind of national suicide.

‘ Given such weakness, we should not then be surprised that America’s major cities and her capitol have been filled with protesters who march in solidarity with Hamas and their deadly attack on Israel. It makes no difference that these protests purport to be in support of the Palestinian cause. Their practical effect is the support of terrorism and murder….

One of the first acts of the Biden Administration was to restore $200 million in funding to the Palestinian Authority, which had been cut off by the Trump Administration because it was being used to support the terrorist activities of Hamas. That fact will not be lost on any of these leftist groups. Nor will the fact that the Biden Administration facilitated billions of dollars in direct money transfers, oil sales, and forward contracts to Hamas’s central ally, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Iran’s central ally, the Chinese Communist Party.

The Biden Administration made the decision to support a global alliance led by Communist China that was antithetical to the interests of the United States. In so doing, President Biden has not only turned against one of America’s closest friends, the state of Israel, but has signaled to the Communist movements within the United States on whose side he stands. Needless to say, Israel must be prepared to go it alone under these circumstances….

‘ At an important level, the Biden Administration—–despite Joe Biden’s pronouncements about the need for greater U.S. support of Israel and his embrace of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—–shares ideologically the broad animus that the pan-Islamic world has for the West in general and the United States and Israel in particular…. He has surrounded himself with a State Department and National Security Council who share the American Left’s disdain for what America represents. What else is to explain the support of Communist China, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah? And what is to explain the knowing importation of 5.1 million new illegal immigrants during the past two and a half years, on top of the 13 to 20 million illegal immigrants that were already here?….’

It was, even if just to raise the click-count of this and similar stories.
We need to demonstrate that the radical nihilist antisemitic evil Left is NOT a defining faction of America, or even a majority (I hope) of the liberal-left useful idiots.
Alinsky rules: marginalize the opposition, because they are the fringe on the margin, for now, although metastasizing rapidly.

Encourage changers any way we can.

  22. }}} I can’t vouch for its veracity, but to me it has the ring of truth, as well as (sadly) familiarity in its m.o.:

The world needs more snipers taking out evil men (and, in some cases, perhaps, women).

}}} We need to demonstrate that the radical nihilist antisemitic evil Left is NOT a defining faction of America, or even a majority (I hope) of the liberal-left useful idiots.

There was a time when The Left had moderates. I don’t see it any more. The Left is all PostModern Liberals — at least 95% of them — as opposed to “classical” liberals.

They are the sort of liberal Truman referred to as “Professional” liberals:

Truman was particularly irked by the “professional liberal,” whom he distinguished from “real liberals” like himself. Professional liberals lived by slogans and saw American politics as an ideological war, which Truman considered alien to the genius of the Democratic party. In his lifetime the party was a sort of political melting pot in which conservative Southerners and moderate border-state men like Truman found common ground with Eastern liberals. “Professional liberals are too arrogant to compromise,” Truman said. “In my experience they were also very unpleasant people on a personal level. Behind their slogans about saving the world and sharing the wealth with the common man lurked a nasty hunger for power. They’d double-cross their own mothers to get it or keep it.”

    https://www.americanheritage.com/eight-days-harry-truman

“Moderate” liberals are about as scarce on the ground as “Moderate” Muslims. Yes, they exist, but they are very thin on the ground…
