  1. “posture of supine weakness”.

Rather, “affinity and alliance with the Mullahs (and their proxies) under the guise of ‘posture of supine weakness’ “….

File under: Deceit today, Deceit tomorrow, Deceit forever!

  2. yes doran is one of the leading authorities, he couldn’t get tenure at princeton, you realize that,

  3. Regarding Yuri Soloviev; that really is incredible! His athleticism is phenomenal and it really does look like he is defying gravity. I assume it’s a similar technique that I learned when doing a basketball jumpshot; it’s what you do with your body at the precise point when you lose the battle against gravity and start descending.

  4. How do you know Doran wanted tenure, miguel, when a sane person looking around at the nutso landscape in Academia the last three decades would properly flee in horror?

  5. point taken, but he was an associate professor then the syracuse maxwell school and hudson institute took him

  6. unlike many of these experts, he has a track record of good judgement,

he is a little too understanding of the Turk’s role, if one has a quibble,

  7. @ physicsguy

    A) “Interesting interview of DeSantis with Megyn Kelly and his efforts to get US citizens out of Israel.”

    • Do you believe DeSantis’ should act and let others talk about the state taxpayer funded effort, or that DeSantis should use the state taxpayer funded effort to promote his campaign? (see interview & DeSantis campaign website)

    B) “I don’t see Trump sending his 757 over to get people out.”

    • Do you believe DeSantis’ actions are due to his role as Governor, or due to his role as Candidate? (see your compare to another candidate)

    C) I believe any actions taken to help are for the good.

    • I also believe this why DeSantis was willing to break the law in Florida – both letter & spirit – to both run for reelection in Florida and for President. He wanted to use the power & pulpit of a sitting Governor to benefit his campaign.

    • I will still vote for him if he is the Republican nominee – but this an example of why I think DeSantis is just another politician. (see self-serving)

  8. Do you believe DeSantis’ actions are due to his role as Governor, or due to his role as Candidate? (see your compare to another candidate)

Is the argument here that DeSantis is being too self promotional in contrast to Trump who is pure as the wind driven snow and not ever self promotional? If so, that’s pretty funny.

  9. that guy:

So DeSantis isn’t pure enough for you?

He’s been doing good things in Florida long before running for president. I’m astounded at how far the anti-DeSantis forces are willing to stretch in order to critique him.

  10. I’m still liking DeSantis and his successful efforts to rescue Americans from Hamas is another reason I do.

I wonder if DeSantis is running a dark horse strategy — not trying to lead, but keeping an eye out for opportunities if Trump stumbles (which is hardly out of the question).

DeSantis is quite young (45) as current politicians go. DeSantis has plenty of time. Maybe he’s really looking ahead to 2028.

  11. Re: Sending planes to evacuate Americans.

A lot of Americans won’t want to leave.

I was in Israel in 1982. The operation in Lebanon was precipitated by rockets being shot in Israel and Argov’s assassination. (Tensions — and rockets — started as early as March; the actual “war” started in June.) I was safe in Jerusalem, but there was a LOT of talk about American students (and other foreign students) leaving. None of us wanted to leave, and none of us did.

My group’s academic advisor had been an academic advisor there for over ten years, which means she was doing the same role in 1973. And none of her students left when the Yom Kippur War started. The war started during the school’s fall break, so it was not in the middle of the school term. But every one of her students, and the students of two of her fellow advisors, stayed.

I was also in Israel during the summer of 1990, when Iraq invaded Kuwait. Saddam Hussein was saber-rattling and threatening to bombard Israel. I had already planned on leaving in September and felt guilty for leaving when I did. I apologized for leaving — when I closed my bank account, I told them that I had already planned on leaving in September and that it had nothing to do with the fear of Iraq.

For a lot of American Jews in Israel, sending a plane just says to them, “Abandon your fellow Jews and come back to the relative safety of the US.” or else, “You are too wimpy to stay.”

  12. Trump is having some legal troubles now. If he weren’t tied down with those — or if he could spend taxpayer’s money — he would have sent a jet.

  13. Lee Also, I don’t think DeSantis is talking about forcing any Americans to leave. They’re just offering the opportunity to those that want it. Nothing wrong with that. There are always lots of visitors, and tourists, who don’t want to be in a possible war zone. Nothing wrong with that, either.

  14. Lee also:

There us a fundamental difference between doing something and saying something.

There is also a fundamental difference between what the Brandon junta has and is doing and what is being done by DeSantis and other Republicans.

  15. @ Nonapod, Neo

“He’s been doing good things in Florida long before running for president. ”

    • 100% agree.

    • Again with the Strawmen – and The dog did not bark. (see your responses & my questions with context)

    • I’ll add that drawing attention to “the good” – regardless of campaign race or candidate – is not the same thing as drawing attention to “the good” in an effort to disparage another candidate. (see “I don’t see Trump…”}.

    • Lastly, one casualty of this primary is that some of the “pro-DeSantis forces” seem to have lost their sense of irony. (see “…how far the anti-DeSantis forces are willing to stretch in order to critique him”)

  16. “Trump is having some legal troubles now. If he weren’t tied down with those — or if he could spend taxpayer’s money — he would have sent a jet.”

That’s a very definitive statement to make. How do you know he would have sent his jet? Do you have a quote that shows his intent?

“is not the same thing as drawing attention to “the good” in an effort to disparage another candidate. (see “I don’t see Trump…”}.”

Actions vs words, or non-action. Yes, I AM disparaging him. I see DeSantis doing something I consider good, no matter the motivation, and I see Trump having the opportunity to do a similar action and not doing it. Yep, definitely disparaging Trump and happy to do it.

  17. DeSantis has sent supplies to Israel as well as taking people out of the country. And removing people means that there are fewer foreign nationals to worry about and protect.

As governor, he would know what companies and countries have assisted Florida during their problems, such as hurricanes. Israel sent search and rescue teams to that condo collapse in Surfside FL in 2021. Perhaps, he is returning the favor.

  18. “Trump’s 757 is a luxury biz jet that only seats 43. Not cost effective.”

Then there are plenty of charter 737s etc that Trump could afford to send instead.

  19. I can’t believe I’m reading adults arguing over the political nature of a rescue effort to evacuate civilians from a war zone.

Maybe, just maybe take a half of a second to celebrate the fact that innocent children, women and men were transported from an extremely dangerous, hellish environment to safety, before panicking over whether it causes Donald Trump’s poll numbers to drop 1/2 a point.

  20. ballon – French for “hang time”. Leaping was my favorite thing in ballet.

    🙂

  21. @ Rufus T. Firefly

“Maybe, just maybe take a half of a second to celebrate the fact that innocent children, women and men were transported from an extremely dangerous, hellish environment to safety,…”

    • Strikes me that your appeal to the moral high ground would be more successful if you avoided using references to campaigns & candidates. (see “…before panicking over whether it causes Donald Trump’s poll numbers to drop 1/2 a point.”)

    • Otherwise, it may be seen by some as a continuation of a conversation with a “political nature”, and an attempt to find fault with others for discussing the “political nature” aspects while you do so yourself – that may seem disingenuous to some. (see Captain Renault)

    • Also believe that the news was worth noting on Oct 16, and Oct 18 – for the same reasons you noted. (see “…were transported from an extremely dangerous, hellish environment to safety, …”)

    • See Neo’ Oct 16 Roundup: “(6) DeSantis expedites bringing Floridians back from Israel, and takes a very firm stand against receiving a single Palestinian refugee in this country”.

    • See the two Roundup comments – neither of them disparaging of other campaigns & candidates.

    • Lastly, I find more in common with your points – than not-in-common – which strikes me as a good thing. (see “I believe any actions taken to help are for the good.”)

  22. that guy,

Putting words in a list with bullet points doesn’t give magical legitimacy to the words.

Ron Desantis is the governor of Florida. If the legislature or a majority of Floridians disagree with him using tax payer dollars to rescue Floridians from a war zone they will deal with it within the state.

Not everything has to be political. It’s entirely possible a Governor takes his role to serve and protect the citizens of his state seriously and acts to do what is in his power to help them when they are in harm’s way. Isn’t that what a Governor is supposed to do? Isn’t that the job? To miss the humanity and wonderful news that at least a few innocent people are no longer in a war zone because you are concerned it may hurt Donald Trump is not healthy.

Trump is up by about 40 points over Ron Desantis and the first GOP primary is still 1/4 of a year away. Desantis’ executive leadership in this situation will be forgotten by then. Relax.

  23. I’m being snarky, just because I want to, but-

protesters have STORMED THE CAPITAL BUILDING, in the nation’s capital city…this week, to call for: a cease-fire, in the War in Israel.

That action is breaking the law.

    Please, Federal government:

treat these people like: “deadly attackers”, and “traitors”, and “rioters”, and “deadly people who want to [overthrow] the government”, just like you did for the “January 6th” protesters.

Do some people think this situation is different? Maybe. But- a group of 4 or more strangers, angrily entering a building, while breaking the law, + demanding things from me or from others- is threatening, and that makes for a situation where the police need to be called in to keep everyone safe.

Breaking the law, and illegal entry into buildings, is not a right that anyone has.

    https://www.wrtv.com/protesters-at-us-capitol-call-for-gaza-ceasefire

p.s. Or, if you want to think of it in this way: entering a building and staying in it, to do illegal protests, is illegal.

  24. This Time It’s Different Dept:

‘Pulp Fiction’ Director Quentin Tarantino Pays Visit to Israeli Military Base to ‘Boost Morale’ in War Against Hamas

“A bright moment during a dark time: Legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino showed his solidarity with the Israeli people by making a surprise visit to southern Israel, which has been completely devastated by Hamas’ ongoing terror war. There, he toured military bases and mingled with soldiers and residents, igniting a social media frenzy of selfies and videos. What a beautiful way to show support,” the group went on to say in the caption of its Instagram post.

Tarantino is actually a resident of Israel, having called the city of Tel Aviv his home for quite a bit now after marrying Israeli singer Daniella Pick in 2018. He met Pick in Israel back in 2009.

“I love the country, and the people are really nice, very nice to me, and they seem excited that I’m here,” Tarantino remarked about living in Tel Aviv.

Those Israeli girls really knock me out.
    They leave LA behind.

After the dreadful “Django” and “Hateful 8” movies, I assumed Tarantino was irredeemably woke.

We’re through the Looking Glass, people.
