  1. I bet the MSM and Dems are all lining up to trash talk DeSantis about just how bad he performed over this hurricane that is headed to FL. It will be unrelenting, and wrong. Will Joe declare it a disaster area? Will FEMA do what they are supposed to do? Will Trump weigh in too?
    Questions Questions

  2. SHIREHOME–

What is DeSantis supposed to do that he hasn’t already done?

From a news report yesterday: “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 46 counties . . . . The state has mobilized 1,100 National Guard members, who have 2,400 high-water vehicles and 12 aircraft at their disposal for rescue and recovery efforts. Tampa International Airport and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport said they would close on Tuesday, and the Sunrail commuter rail service in Orlando was being suspended. . . . ‘The property — we can rebuild someone’s home,’ DeSantis said during a news conference Monday. ‘You can’t unring the bell, though, if somebody stays in harm’s way and does battle with Mother Nature.’

DeSantis said the Florida Department of Transportation would waive tolls on highways in the Tampa area and the Big Bend starting at 4 a.m. Tuesday to help ease any burden on people in the path of the storm.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/tropical-storm-idalia-expected-become-hurricane-move-florida-102615471

IMHO, he’s doing a lot better than either Brandon or Mayor Pete.

  3. he is a disaster area, but the ‘right people’ like mo dowd, who pointed out some of his lies, still stuck by him in 2008, and 2020, as opposed to his real rival, both times,

  4. Florida knows what do do about hurricanes, and DeSantis performed admirably with Hurricane Ian last year. My daughter’s in-laws are already on the road to get out ahead of the storm. Most people will heed the warnings.

  5. The Odyssey plays a part in Julian Jaynes’ “The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind”. The Odyssey is cited as an example of mankind’s shift from an non-conscious state to our current understanding of human consciousness.

We were in Florida immediately after Ian and were pleased that DeSantis suspended tolls on all roads. Besides that small assist for the evacuation it meant that the goods, services and labor for the cleanup and rebuild were unhindered. And there seemed to be hundreds of volunteers from other states in our area.

  6. Kate–

I agree that Floridians know how to deal with hurricanes, but I’ll still be glad when physicsguy checks in here. I’m not sure exactly where he’s located in Florida, but we can hope he’s not in the direct path of Idalia (which is presently a Cat 1 hurricane).

  7. Biden’s latest gaffe: saying that he “literally and not figuratively” convinced Strom Thurmond to vote for the Civil Rights Act. The “literally and not figuratively” is the tell. Of course he’s lying.

But how much is lying and how much is confusion? Biden was 21 or 22 when the famous Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. Thurmond opposed the bill. Biden was in no position to convince him of anything. Biden lied, and this generated widespread derision.

But Thurmond did vote for a 1991 Civil Rights Act proposed by GHW Bush and passed with 93 votes in the Senate. Doubtless, Biden didn’t convince Thurmond how to vote then. So did Biden also lie by concealing the date of the bill he was talking about, or is his mind so gone that he can’t remember things like that? And which explanation makes Biden come out worse? Which causes more concern over his fitness for the office?

  8. PA Cat, I believe physicsguy is in the Jacksonville area, on the east coast. The storm is projected to go through Florida and come out the other side as a tropical storm, so his newly-built house (assuming he’s not in a flood zone) should be fine. I think Rufus T. Firefly is also a Floridian, and send him my best wishes for safety.

  9. Checking in. We are on the northwest side of Jax, about 8 miles west of I295 and about the same SW of the airport. Rural area. Forecast currently is for winds sustained 25mph with gusts to 60; 2-4″ of rain. We expect to lose power. Of course, even though we have a pad and hookup ready, we decided to forego a generator for this year and save the money for a needed mower (2 acres). Karma bites us in the ass.

We know the drill from living in CT with hurricanes and worse, the Nor’easter snows. Filling up the bathtubs, have the lanterns and batteries. Can cook as we have propane gas cooktop, just need to light with a match.

Latest track shifted a bit west to landfall at west side of Big Bend…hopefull it stays there or moves even more west for us….terrible for those on that coast. What’s up with I-named storms and Florida??

  10. Just another open-thread comment about something I read someplace else.

About a month ago, Neo wrote a post entitled “The Marxist librarian” (https://tinyurl.com/46kaauh2). Her post referred to an article published in “The Federalist” about a year ago.

For those who’d like to read a follow-up, “The Federalist” has just published another article about Emily Drabinski, the Marxist librarian, who’s president of the ALA (American Library Association) (https://tinyurl.com/mvpyekaf).

The news is mostly bad, but a small number of states have threatened to sever ties with the ALA, and both Missouri and Montana have formally taken that step. Nevertheless, the sordid alliance between Marxism and pornography for children proceeds apace.

  11. @Abraxas Ever notice Biden’s similarity to ChatGPT? It all depends on the prompts. I’m thinking LLMs have been naturally occurring for centuries.

  12. physicsguy–

Good to hear from you– yes, I’m not surprised you still have un-fond memories of CT blizzards and nor’easters. Last winter was surprisingly mild here, but who knows what will happen this year?

Anyway, wishing you and your family all the best.

PS. On the MLB front, I was surprised to see that the Rays and the Marlins are going ahead with what they call the Citrus Series (“MLB’s juiciest rivalry”), the Marlins hosting the Rays in Miami. Tonight’s game is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. at loanDepot Park (there’s a name for you)– let’s hope the fans all get home safely.

  13. could a crew have survived 10 years before returning, it was not a huge distance between ithaca and troy after all,

  14. PA+CAT, I was not criticizing him, but rather making a comment on what the left will do. He will do all that is humanly possible to help FL survive this storm.

  15. SHIREHOME– I know you were talking about the Left rather than DeSantis, but I decided to post what I could find from yesterday’s news reports to document (for Neo’s readers) what he’s done already– knowing that the usual suspects will try to minimize his actions if not lie outright.

  16. I had posted this comment on another page, but I think this comment is more appropriate, here, so I’m now re-posting most of my comment, here:

“…Looking at some TV shows, today:

    1) the show, “Mail Call”, is doing a program on- tactics used by terrorists in the past,

    and,

    2) some PBS channels are showing a show about- some parts of The British Army + terrorists fighting each other, in 1960s-(1990s?), Northern Ireland.

Why are these channels interested in terrorists, right now?

Has there been an [escalated threat] of terrorist attacks, In Europe or in The Americas, recently?”

It just seems odd to me, that these TV channels have brought up terrorism, very recently.

Why are they so interested in [the topic of terrorism], right now?

    What do you think?

  17. its the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday, at least what was the key for this last one ‘mostly peaceful protest’ of course the provos are painted as right, and the udas’ ‘irish deplorables,’ are knuckle draggers, the next set is about bobby sands and the hunger strikes,

lawfare targeted the paras and left the provo’s mostly untouched,
they did address the mcconville murder,

  18. And a timely reminder from David Harsanyi, inspired by Joe the Plumber’s premature death…mostly about the insidious legacy of Barack Obama…
” ‘Joe The Plumber’ Was Right About Barack Obama”—
    https://thefederalist.com/2023/08/29/joe-the-plumber-was-right-about-barack-obama/
    H/T Powerline blog.
    Key graf (RTWT)…lest we forget:
‘…The contemporary left turn from liberalism was solidified by Obama, who had little use for constitutional limits on state power. So having Obama lecture anyone about “democracy” is just galling. The Obama administration spied on the “free press,” spied on ordinary American citizens, spied on and targeted political enemies, spied on the Senate, blew up American citizens without a trial, and helped concoct the most successful political hoax in American history. You could write a book about the corrosive illiberalism normalized under his rule. Obama was no moderate, as so many of his supporters like to portray him. He merely did as much as he could get away with — which was a ton….’

  19. Regarding generators.
One of my uncles, who is a retired engineer, has one of those large house generators that is supposed to automatically kick in when the power goes out.
We had a thunderstorm a few weeks back, before our multi week , triple digit temperature drought. The lighting in that storm knocked out the electronics in both his and his neighbors generators. They ended up going for several days without electricity in spite of the expensive generators, as they waited for parts. My uncle said he was going to start disconnecting it before thunder storms.

  20. Mark Judge chimes in:
“I tried to warn conservatives about the American Stasi. They ignored me”—
    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/restoring-america/fairness-justice/i-warned-conservatives-about-american-stasi-they-ignored-me
    H/T Instapundit.
    Key graf:
“…what the Left did to me, it will do to you. The Left will abuse the legal system and use the media and opposition researchers to try and destroy you and everyone else in its way.
” That’s exactly what it is doing to the Supreme Court and former President Donald Trump….”

  21. Meanwhile, 1600 courageous scientists are valiantly fighting back against COVID-19 v2.0…The Sequel:
    ‘More than 1,600 scientists, including two Nobel laureates, declare climate “emergency” a myth;
‘The global coalition of scientists say that politics and a journalistic frenzy has propelled a doomsday climate change hysteria. The signatories also ask other scientists to “address uncertainties and exaggerations in their predictions of global warming.’—
    https://justthenews.com/politics-policy/environment/more-1600-scientists-including-nobel-laureates-declare-climate-crisis

  22. Yeah, good luck with that. I applaud these scientists for their honesty and bravery in standing up to the climate cult. But I doubt it’ll do much good. There’s just far too much power to be gained in continued climate hysteria. The powers that be will continue to simply ignore and suppress any and all information that contradicts the climate panic narrative in legacy media and social media.

  23. Actually, that was my first reaction, too.
But one must truly admire their tenacity, and fearlessness, in the face of the near total policy of censorship, canceling and ridicule perpetrated by the Pravda-wannabe news “providers” that the Western media/infotech (as well as institutions of “higher education”) have so egregiously become….

(Speaking of good luck…wishing you all in the path of the upcoming hurricane the best of it….)

  24. Tomorrow is the official two-year anniversary of the Great Afghanistan Bug-Out, more formally known as the “2020–2021 US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020%E2%80%932021_US_troop_withdrawal_from_Afghanistan

We had many discussions then, including speculation on what would happen to those Americans, Afganis or both left behind to the tender mercies of the Taliban. There were concerns about public executions or ongoing ransom demands.

Two years later I don’t find much reportage or interest in that story. Obviously it’s not a story the Biden administration wishes to be covered. His media minions are happy to comply.

It does seem possible that the Taliban could have forced the issue by beginning public executions attended by the world press, but that has not happened either.

Pace Bishop Berkeley and his tree falling in a forest, something has happened to those Left Behind, even if the media isn’t covering the story. What might that be?

My web searches also don’t show much about negotiations between the Biden administration and the Taliban since the Great Bug-Out.

My guess is the US is funneling some sums of money and favors to the Taliban on the down-low.

    What’s yours?

  25. Barry,

I just signed the document. However, it’s spitting into the wind, just like the Oregon Petition a decade ago. But, WTH, why not?

  26. Great link, Barry, thank G-d some scientists still practice actual science.

Money quote from John F’n Kerry: “Humanity is inexorably threatened by humanity itself”. So I guess we’ll have to destroy the planet to save it …

  27. Right on schedule– the mayor of my unfortunate city just sent out a blast phone call at 6 p.m. scaring the locals about COVID– no surprise after the John Tierney article in City Journal and a new post by Michael Walsh, “Here Comes Da Bug”:

Just in time for back-to-school, not to mention the start of the 2024 presidential primaries, the drabs and trollops of the Corporate Media have begun beating the drums for the Biden regime and the CDC/Big Pharma shills to announce the Return of the Black Death, aka Covid. If you liked the Covid Hoax the first time, you’re going to love the redux. The Thing that Destroyed the Trump Administration, ruined our election system, smashed the American economy, wiped out two or three years of schooling, and effectively repealed the First Amendment — not because of disease, mind you, but via bureaucratic fiat — now wants back in our lives.

  28. In order to grasp the meaning of the Odyssey, one must recognize and understand the significant role women play in the great cosmic tragicomic drama of human affairs, as enacted by Odysseus in his journey back to Ithaca. Five women interact with Odysseus in the course of his journey: Circe, Calpyso, Nausicaa, the goddess Athena, and Penelope. Each is an archetypal feminine figure — or, rather, an aspect of the feminine archetype. Each is strong in her own way, powerful in her own way, and very dangerous in her own way. The Sirens are purely dangerous and, as such, are not feminine archetypes but rather expressions of femininity in its most perilous form, and which exists in all women, most particularly in the five women named above. It is fitting that Odysseus should finally return to Penelope: constant, wise, enduring, steady, brave, loyal . . . and, yes, dangerous in her own way — especially to those who would get between her and her man.

  29. FWIW, Idalia has been upgraded to a Cat 2 hurricane. Best wishes for the safety of all Neo’s readers in Florida.

  30. Way back when, a dozen of us HS guys translated large swaths of The Odyssey. A fave part for us lurid-loving teens — aside, natch, from the hero’s sexcapades — was the wily Ithacan’s run-in with anthropophagous Polyphemus, whose lone peeper got incinerated with a burning stake in crackling, sizzling, detail (yes, the adage is accurate: “The Greeks had a word for it”, and here, Homer deployed them to gory effect). But what strikes me today are echoes in the behavior of Odysseus and our treasonous husk of a POTUS: Just as the former fakes his name (“Outis” — no one), so that his captor’s kin ignore him when he roars that “No One” has blinded him, so Biden seeks to cloak his naked venality in made-up IDs; and just as, from the safety of his escape ship, hubristic Odysseus brags out his true identity — thus incurring a sea of woe from Poseidon, the big guy’s old man — so the senile imbecile crows from the rooftops of extorting Ukraine to shield his verminous spawn.

Except: What god will make him pay?

Interesting. Backup generators knocked out by power surges. Never owned one, but I have experienced power surge damage from storms. Many years ago we had a severe winter wind storm that knocked a high voltage line into a low voltage line and fried a lot of people’s hardware.

I recall a computer power switch box with multiple outlets and surge protectors I had did its job of protecting, but the plastic box was very melted in the process. A few other things were not so lucky. I think you can install excellent surge protection at the main circuit breaker box for a home, but I never got around to it.

  32. Way back when, a dozen of us HS guys translated large swaths of The Odyssey.

    Le Mot Juste:

Wow. You were translating large swaths of classical Greek in high school? Pretty cool.

I was translating paragraphs of Caesar and Cicero in Catholic School and not very well. At times I wish I had worked harder at Latin.

Fans of the “Odyssey” might consider taking on James Joyce’s “Ulysses,” which is a high concept novel, answering a question no one was asking:

What would the “Odyssey” be like if rewritten from the point of view of a Jewish ad salesman with an unfaithful wife in Dublin circa 1900?

One will find the Odyssey’s main characters — Penelope, Circe, Calypso, Nausicaa, the sirens, and Polyphemus, though not Athena. It’s quite ingenious.

I long wondered why Joyce would seize on such a project. The answer is somewhat endearing. As a child, Joyce was fascinated by a picture book of the Odyssey.

  33. RE: China as the land of “shortcuts and facades”

In a recent post I listed some of the major problems that China is facing, and as part of this list I also mentioned that a lot of their supposed, highly touted progress in high tech is apparently fake.

Below, for instance–as touted to the world by a CCP official–are the laughably phony images supposedly illustrating China’s progress in high speed rail.

    * See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9VZf4ISG-o

  34. Update on Idalia: the storm is now a Cat 3 hurricane, predicted to make landfall as a Cat 4 (major hurricane). From the NWS: “At 200 AM EDT (0600 UTC), the center of Hurricane Idalia was located near latitude 28.3 North, longitude 84.5 West. Idalia is moving toward the north near 15 mph (24 km/h). A northward to north-northeastward motion is expected through morning, with Idalia’s center forecast to reach the Big Bend coast of Florida this morning. After landfall, Idalia is forecast to turn toward the northeast and east-northeast, moving near or along the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina late today and Thursday.”

Hope all of Neo’s Florida readers are safe and well.
