Still on the west coast… — 18 Comments

  1. We are experiencing freezing weather for the Los Angeles area, low in the 40’s at night.

  2. 9F in downtown New Haven (wind chill of -9F), 13F at the airport, wind chill of -3F (the airport is on Long Island Sound, which may explain why it’s slightly warmer). The cats are making the most of the heated cat bed, which is large enough for both of them, but I expect they’ll pile on top of me when I go to bed later tonight.

  3. Southern New England is enjoying a virtual heat wave compared to the eastern portions of the Great White North: Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces of Canada are expected to see wind chill temperatures as low as -45F (Ontario and New Brunswick) and -52F (parts of Quebec).

Meanwhile, the temp outside New Haven City Hall has dropped to 1F.

  4. My tiny corner of the Pacific Northwest is pretty moderate right now. Funny how as a little boy in Ohio I loved maps, and was fascinated by the complex land-water geography of the PNW. I dreamt of living there, and now I do. And it is so peaceful, I won’t say exactly where I am!

Modern is still a good place for pizza, and still located on State Street. I’ve always enjoyed eating there. Here’s the current menu, prices, and hours:

  6. Mount Washington just broke the country’s record for the lowest wind chill temperature: “New Hampshire’s Mount Washington felt more like Mars than planet Earth on Friday as wind chills dipped below an unfathomable minus 110 degrees, a new record for the coldest wind chill ever recorded in the US. Known for having some of the world’s worst weather, Mount Washington saw air temperatures plummet to minus 46 degrees with wind speeds averaging over 100 miles per hour with gusts over 125 miles per hour. . . The wind gusts caused dangerous conditions for the weather observers even while they were hunkered down inside. . . .”

Meanwhile, the observatory at the top of Mount Washington is run by one tough kitty: “Nimbus the cat, who lives in the observatory with staffers, was reportedly cozied up and unbothered by the deadly storm, despite being a bit grumpy from taking his flea medication. ‘He is actually sleeping through most of this event,’ Tarasiewciz said.”

  7. ” ‘You can run but you can’t hide’ may refer to: “He can run, but he can’t hide”, a statement attributed to American boxer Joe Louis”

The Grand Solar Minimum is coming to a plant near you.

Since the “weather” is just what is experienced today, and “climate” is a reflection of what is in your closet, be prepared. As in the Pelosi house break in…”…then things got weird.”.

  8. It was so cold that on Friday, whenever I walked into our break room with its two walls of windows, and back out, the pressure difference was so great that my fitness watch thought I had gone upstairs.

It could not keep that room warm.

  9. It was below -10 F here yesterday morning for a while. My car battery narrowly avoided a crisis. I’m glad to see Mt. Washington setting the pace!

Kate, see, they knew this was going to happen and sent that balloon to monitor the effects of their wicked temperature manipulations!
