  1. I was attending Villanova (his alma mater) when Jim Croce had passed. IIRC, he was scheduled to appear there that very winter. At the time, V.U. would open the cafeteria during finals week in the evening for the students to have snacks and refreshments while they studied, and one night they played nothing but his music on the P.A. system for us. That was a very nice tribute to a great musician and performer.

  2. Thank you for this. A.J.’s voice isn’t as strong as his father’s, but there’s no shame in that. I love Jim’s voice, but I also really like A.J.’s. There’s a sense of honesty and kindness. You can tell that he’s had to work for it.

  3. David Solway’s latest post on the sovietization of Canadian justice:

    https://the-pipeline.org/hope-springs-infernal-pawlowski-lich-and-canadian-justice/

“The war against justice, truth and democracy will continue to claim its victims. The federal authority brandished by Justin Trudeau has no intention of relenting in its campaign to silence and harass its targets. . . . the unvaccinated are still subject to quarantine and crushing fines thanks to Trudeau’s infamous ArriveCAN app wielded against millions of Canadians. Legislation is in the works to cripple internet communication under the guise of preventing ‘hate speech,’ shorthand for anything the government disapproves of. The violation of democratic principles is rapidly becoming synonymous with the law of the land.”

  4. This story really hit some emotional triggers for me. The love of a father and son. The losses and how they influence your inner way of relating to the world. So much psychic pain soothed and healed by love and good memories of the relationship. Very moving and informative.

  5. A quick question: If someone has a Facebook account can they print out comments they receive? My brother died a week ago, and there are 200+ comments on his son’s page. My brothers wife would like to see what people have to say in their condolences. Neither she nor I have an idea about how Facebook works..

Thanks for help for a non-tech nerd.

  6. PA plus Cat, that’s chilling.
I saw a comment on Gab to the effect of “in my youth I couldn’t believe propaganda would work. It was too obvious. Now, I’m not so sure.”
I am using the phrase “Good Germans” frequently now. People seem blind and fearful. There are lots of crises, some I think manufactured, to keep them that way.

  7. expat:

You have my condolences for the passing of your brother.

I hope you get help with the Facebook question.

  8. om,
My nephew says they can be printed out. We’ll see.

My brother knew everyone in my hometown: hunters, fishers, mechanics, farmers. He was always there to help people. It is amazing how many people are helping my sister-in-law. Of course, she was with my brother through hospitalizations, radiation treatments, feeding tubes etc. And we have a cousin who has been incredible. It’s a typical small-town response. No big-city bubble life.

  9. Neo,
It has been hard from across the pond. I have had to contact the cemetery manager and lots of other people. I talked to John and his wife daily, bu it’s not the same as being there.

  10. If there’s such a thing as a comment that’s too off-topic even for an open thread, then this just might be it.

    MONKEYPOX MONKEYPOX MONKEYPOX

The name itself is a lurid scream from the cheap-ink section of supermarket tabloids, so I felt safe in ignoring it, but the new plague has finally broken through my own private news buffer.

Is there any good news? In this case, it’s almost all good news, if you have the right perspective. Unfortunately, explaining that perspective would force me into pornographic satire, far beneath the standards set by the readers of this blog. Which leads me to the second bit of good news about this new plague of pox.

Contrary to its name, “Newneo,” this blog’s readers skew old old. Before 1972, most children were vaccinated for smallpox, which seems to provide residual protection against monkeypox. Enough anyway, so that if you catch it, it probably won’t kill you.

Anyway, there’s a good article entitled “Monkeypox: What You Actually Need to Know” at https://www.commonsense.news/p/monkeypox-what-you-actually-need

P.S. Too be fair to the monkeys, I should mention that the name is a misnomer. The virus primarily resides in populations of small African rodents. American Marxist media leaders have been informed, by the WHO, that Monkeypox stigmatizes Africans, so they must start calling it hMPXV.

  11. There was a time when song writers wrote stories. Today they write one verse (or stanza if they’re talented) and repeat it ad nauseam .

  12. Corflour:

But does hMPXV stigmatize the LGBTQWERTY or pronoun community? It is nearly impossible to keep up with who or what is being stigmatized.

  13. Expat: I’m deeply sorry for your loss.

About printing. I know nothing of printing Facebook, but when when all else fails, screen-capture the pages with the comments, page after page. Then print them out or thumb drive folders of them for people to keep. It’s a lot of work, but when things are tricky, capturing them at least allows you to keep them.

I can almost hear the laughter at my brute-force method, but I’m talking about if there is no easy way to print something because of the app. I don’t use FB and never have.

  14. Expat, deepest condolences on the loss of your brother. He sounds like a slat of the earth type person. A real loss to his community and family.

It appears that there are few on this site who are FB users. Could your nephew highlight the comments on his FB page and copy them to an e-mail? Or print them out and then scan into an e-mail? Just some quick ideas. I don’t know if they will work.

  15. expat: Heartfelt sympathy about the loss of your brother. It’s good to know, though, that you have a cousin as well as townspeople to help your sister-in-law. And I do hope one of the techies who comment here can help you with the FB problem– I’m another non-user.

  16. A proposed new term and its definition

    “Fiat News”
An assertion of fact with no basis in reality other than it comes from those in a position of power.

    Examples:
    Men can have babies.
    Inflation is transitory.
A persistent declining GDP does not indicate a recession.
January 6th was an armed insurrection.

  17. expat, I’m sorry about the passing of your brother. May his memory be eternal.

Cornflour, hMPXV, what? Can I buy a vowel?

Minta, hello! I’ve not seen you for a bit around here.

  18. Expat, Badger Condolences and Sorrow at the loss if your brother. Brothers are important.

  19. AesopFan–First of all this guy is a “Florida man,” (a lot of strange things, people, and behaviors come out of Florida, see Youtube) and that tells us a lot.

Second, I note that an increasing number of members of Congress, scientists, and academics are interested in UFOs, devoting more and more time to their study, and trying to figure out what they are, where they come from, their impact on our national security and culture, and what their agenda might be.

The days when anyone interested in, taking seriously, and trying to analyze the phenomena of UFOs was automatically awarded a tinfoil hat are waning.

  20. it’s hot as blazes in ocala, so his brain pan was fried, of course stanton friedman, with his majestic magic, which influenced men in black and the x files, and dark skies put a patina of truthiness to the conjecture,

in castros cuba, they call it dangerousness,

Just call it oceania, until desantis begins he reconquest

  21. @ JimNorCal > “Man arrested for ‘causing anxiety’ on Facebook”

The graphic in the banned Tweet was clever, and certainly offensive.
That used to be called “comedy” and was a prized commodity, because it was intended to make the viewers consider and possibly revise their sub-conscious premises, which was also the function of the court jester — and the Old Testament prophets.

Some of the comments were amusing, and others made a good point:
How come the Left never considers how much anxiety they cause on the Right?

  22. I looked at a few more articles aggregated by Citizen Free Press; this one is outstanding.

    https://off-guardian.org/2022/07/29/masks-of-benevolence-the-art-and-times-of-bob-moran/

Moran is a cartoonist who was fired by The Telegraph for his work critical of the UK (and worldwide) Covid response – lockdowns, masks, etc: showing that the decisions of the politicians and health experts caused more harm than good, and were immoral in any case.

    Well-written post, very affecting.

  23. EVERYBODY PANIC! 😀

“The Potato Head Toy” is being [accidentally?] sold with a GENDER, as: MR. POTATO HEAD, on amazon.com!

But…the company that makes, “Mr. Potato Head”, recently took the gender-name from the toy.

What went wrong? How is it, “mister”, again?

How much can this poor nation stand?

    Bwa ha ha! 🙂

  24. The anal-oral sex pox can be easily avoided by avoiding:
anal or oral sex with multiple partners. “Anal-oral promiscuous sex pox” is too long.
    A-O sex pox for short.

It should be illegal to spread this or any other STD – and it should be the responsibility of the one doing the spreading to know that they have it. All gov’t and insurance based medical treatment should require “voluntary” blood samples for tracking purposes – and if the STD victim being treated is unable to identify the perpetrator who, because they were infected, was illegally having sex with them, such victim must pay for treatment himself. As well as being liable for infecting any others while they were infectious.

Corona quarantine & laws & health customs should be extended to STOP the STD crisis.

Great video of AJ Croce – tho I didn’t think Jim Croce’s voice was so great at the time, with wide karaoke (even in Corfu), it’s more clear to me how good his voice was. I wish mine was even as good as AJ’s, but it’s not.

Lots of heart & emotion in the delivery can make up for a weaker voice.
