  1. Just a quick update on virus data before we go into 4-5 days of the states taking time off.

Omicron is here. Things have really changed in the last 4 days of data. Nationally, the new cases/day were 113k, 109k, 148k, and yesterday broke an all time single day record at 248k… largest ever since the start in spring 2020. Georgia, in 4 days, went to 50% of the maximum delta wave. As advertised, seems to be highly contagious. BUT, I also note that the states I follow are testing at an unprecedented level. There are more tests/day than ever before in many of these states. How many are positive and asymptomatic?? How much is the panic simply driven by positive tests of asymptomatic people, and people who are just mildly ill? If this was 1970 with no testing would anyone even care about a “cold” going around? As the saying goes, TMI.

And the good news: despite the explosion of new cases, serious cases are flat, and yesterday even decreased slightly on national level. Omicron living up to what the good doctor in South Africa said; mild and contagious.

Deaths are a two week lagging statistic, so we’ll have to wait until after New Years to see how that plays out.

AND, Merry Christmas to all here at Neo’s!

  2. Deaths are a two week lagging statistic, so we’ll have to wait until after New Years to see how that plays out.

From the South African data, it looks like 10,000 additional cases translates into 40 additional deaths. Looks like the case count in South Africa may have peaked on 16 December.

  3. I will probably not be around much here in the next few days so let me take this opportunity to wish all a Very Merry Christmas! Your company here at neo’s place is a gift throughout the year!

  4. The “experts” have been wrong about absolute everything WuFlu related for 2 years.
    Remember 2 weeks to flatten…?
    Remember 2 million deaths?
    Remember having to ration ventilators?
The 2 doses of vaccine will beat this virus if enough people take it?
Desantis has blood on his hands?
    Cuomo is a hero?
Maybe, just maybe, the numbers from S Africa that Art Deco cites are chastening the “experts.”
    Merry Christmas to all!

  5. Who can forget that other beacon of light serving the people of New York City?

    Merry Christmas!

  6. And just in time for maximal Grinchitude, the Dynamic Duo– Chinese Bat-man Fauci and Robbin’ Collins– are strutting onstage with the predictable downer: “White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci said earlier this week that large gatherings this holiday season are not safe from the coronavirus, even for those fully vaccinated with a booster shot. . . . [Friday’s wave of] flight cancellations come as Francis Collins, the outgoing National Institutes of Health director, warned on Sunday that the U.S. could begin seeing 1 million COVID-19 infections per day if Americans don’t take coronavirus precautions. . . . [Collins] cautioned on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” that the highly transmissible omicron variant could still spark millions of infections in the U.S., even if it causes milder cases of the virus than other strains.”

On a much happier note, Merry Christmas to Rufus, Philip, and the rest of the crew (and of course the skipper!) of the good ship Neo.

  7. Neo, you got me hooked on Ozzyman!

Here he is reviewing people vs. ice #3

Some of these had me in stitches with laughter – especially the dog “I don’t know why he did that.”

What a great sense of fun Ozzy Man has.

  8. One is almost tempted to feel sorry for Biden as he cluelessly insults himself. Almost. But then you realize what a nasty piece of work Biden is and always has been under that “good old Joe” persona. We are living in very dangerous times when someone so obviously impaired as Biden remains in power.

  9. The Santa report and Sundowner repeating Let’s go Brandon is comedy gold.
Light house video was neat, wouldn’t watch this normally

  10. Peter Grant, The Night Christmas Became Real

    .
    .
“We were of all races, and all religions: Christian, Muslim, Jewish, animist, Hindu . . . you name it, and the odds were we had at least one member of that faith in our loose network. It didn’t matter to us. If you believed strongly enough in your faith that you were willing to put your life on the line to help those in need, that was all that counted. We were brothers and sisters from that moment. We would worry about the theology later.”

  11. Apple Betty, I read your Peter Grant link.

Thank you for reaching out through time and space to lead me to something I needed to read, That, with the Joan Didion piece on feminism that Neo quoted from in a later post today, connected a lot more thoughts in my mind about what’s happening.

I’ve cried a lot today, but I’ve also sung.

    Merry Christmas, Everyone!

    Ahh, yes: the terrible twos.
    Toddlers grow out of them.
    Democrats, not so much.

  13. @ Apple Betty – What Minta said.

Peter’s story was amazing, and indeed defines the reality of Christmas.
    Thank you.

It was not a very merry Christmas for him, but it partook of the Joy that C. S. Lewis described so well.
“Joy is the serious business of heaven.”
