  1. In addition to having visited the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, I have over the decades went to three van Gogh Exhibits two at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (Van Gogh at Arles, and Van Gogh at Auvers-St Remy) and one at the Brooklyn Museum (1975).
How to properly correctly pronounce Vincent van Gogh in Dutch.

  2. Sorry, I have zero affinity for any kind of visual art. I knew this when I was as in kindergarten. The teacher asked us to draw something. When she showed all the submissions to the class she looked at mine, said “That’s horrible!” and ripped it up in front of everybody.

It wasn’t as traumatic as it sounds because I knew it sucked when I handed it in.

  3. If anyone gets the chance to go to one of the “Immersive Van Gogh” exhibits where his art is projected on the walls/ceiling/floor so it’s as if you’re inside the painting I highly recommend it. Did this in Chicago. It was wonderful.

  4. Van Gogh – death by suicide in 1890? Or victim of accidental murder, like drunken gun play?

That’s the issue that arose after 2012, for the “Becoming Van Gogh” exhibition in Denver Art Museum (Oct 2012 to Feb 2013). https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/exhibitions/becoming-van-gogh

The curator of Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum opposed this revisionist argument. But the DAM curator supports this revisionism.

    Here’s an outline https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Vincent_van_Gogh

I support the revisionist case as simpler and likelier. But pure romantics keep the traditional claim going. Which is an additional reason why I think it’s unlikely to be veridical.

  5. Mike, I saw the immersive Van Gogh experience, too (in San Fran) and it really was great! Highly recommend it.

  6. Well we’ve had plenty of American China Copes here, so I think it’s time for some Qualified Russian China Copes:

“I have been a long-term China bull since I began blogging. Proof (2008). A lot of what the Western media was writing about China were based on Sinophobic fantasies that had no correlation with reality. Just to be clear, I am still a China bull, at least in the sense that I’m sure its GDP per capita will converge to the levels predicted by its human capital, i.e. Japan/South Korea, giving it by far the world’s largest economy by mid-century. But I am increasingly skeptical about its ability to produce anything that is… really interesting/world-transformational.

It continues making top-down decisions that, as in centuries past, may curtail the ultimate scope of its civilizational achievements….”

  7. Saw the immersive Van Gogh in Honolulu in July.
Don’t miss it if it comes your way, modern tech has redeemed itself!
Glad I saw it when I did, friends had rez for a later date and missed out when our ass of a governor shut it down.
