Glenn Loury doesn’t mince words — 32 Comments

  1. I was literally just watching this. These guys have become a regular watch for me. Don’t always agree but have much respect for their perspectives.

  2. They are correct and it may destroy the progress we have so far. A friend of mine, a black surgery resident with me, was explaining one time how he was elected student body president at UCLA. This was back about 1960. He said, “I was black and well spoken and well behaved and that was enough!” Then he laughed about it. His father was a Navy doctor. He led a good, upper middle class life but died in a freak accident. Great guy.

Now we are 50 years later and it seems we have regressed.

  3. what is the lesson they are trying to impart, that they expect african americans and
latinos to be criminals, because you will be respected, not really but that is certainly the impression they are putting across, from sanford to ferguson to baltimore to minneapolis, kenosha et al, the same for these ‘zombie’ youths, they are not any more aware of reality than others,

  4. Miguel. I don’t think it’s expecting people to be criminals. It is, in the present situation, the refusal to be arrested peacefully which gets people shot. See Daunte Wright, for the most recent case.
You have to ask yourself what he was thinking. Was he dumb enough to think he was going to get away? Or did his self-image require him to violently resist come what may?

I will add the point made by liberal writer Kevin Drum many years ago. Ingestion of lead–more likely in the old homes of the inner city with their lead-based paint–results in diminished impulse control. It is irreversible. So, according to Drum, populations concentrated in the inner city have a disproportionate number of people who are going to just “go off”. And it’s politically impossible to mention it.

That would also answer the question.

  5. Now we are 50 years later and it seems we have regressed.

My mother and father were born around 1929. Features of men and women of that vintage:

    1. They married before they had children – about 97% of the time.

    2. When they were of an age to have children, the children reached term if they did not spontaneously miscarry. Abortion was unsafe, illegal, and rare.

    3. They average 3 or 4 children a piece

    4. About 2/3 of the men had had a stint in the military. About 2/3 of the remainder had been disqualified when given a medical examination.

    5. Their lifetime risk of divorce was about 25%. That 25% was disproportionately composed of childless couples.

    6. Excess weight among them was atypical.

    7. They had a certain equanimity in the face of risk that’s atypical among younger cohorts. They were grateful for what security was to be found in this world. The Depression was over; the War was over.

    8. They formed associations readily – churches, fraternities and sororities, sports leagues, &c.

    9. For them, popular music was Brubeck, Sinatra, and Xavier Cugat. An appreciation of concert and chamber music was common among the collegiate segment. Saturday Review was commercially viable. What we call ‘classic movies’ were ordinary mass entertainment for them.

    10. Curse words were confined to informal settings which were strictly stag.

    11. They knew nothing of street drugs. Intoxicants were lubricants for socializing and appealed to the aesthetic.

    12. They were formal when it was apposite and they were informal when apposite. Their associations were concentric.

We’ve been regressing for a bloody long time.

  6. So it’s lead paint now? Might it not be Phlogiston? Maybe excessive catfish consumption concentrates mercury in the brain? Some evil genius Nazi Moon Base Scientist invented a Negro Run Amok Death Ray?

Nobody invented excuses for the Boston Irish, Jews from the Pale, Italians, etc.. who all inhaled the same paint fumes. All of the above took a degree of socialization before becoming even remotely palatable (let alone digestible) and with varying degrees of success… but all have done vastly better than the Ex Africa Semper Aliquid Novi Brigade under the microscope here.

Does lead paint affect Blacks differently than Ashkenazi Jews? Asking for a Friend. Or Paddy O’Bogshillelagh? That’s me asking this time :).

Also why are Blacks preponderant in some Inner City areas? In large part because they violently drove out the Whites in the 60s with riot, rape, muggings, arson. Were they snorting lead paint in sharecropper shacks before then? I know! It was some toxic substance in Simon Legree’s cheroots? No! There was something in the caulking on the slave ships…

Occam. Then move on. It’s not a moral judgement. It just Is. We don’t get to do an End Zone Dance about it. Frankly Whites should be crapping themselves about East Asian IQ advantage and also their ability to act cooperatively in groups against us. Blacks should be a minor well-managed distraction. That they are not is symptomatic of a terrible loss of self-confidence and sanity amongst White Folk.

  7. The Viva & Barnes Sidebar episode tonight with JD Vance is awesome. This guy is so impressive.

  8. Nothing wrong with the extreme right hand tail guys in the video. What they or their opinions have to do with the Blacks from one SD to the right all the way out to the left is anyone’s guess. But I’d hazard one for $5: Nothing.

  9. One thing I try to do when these things happen and the hysteria gets going, is ask whether if the arrestee/victim was white and did what the arrestee/ victim did, would a white person like me think “the police acted outrageously”, or think: “Dumbass.”
Most of the time it is the latter.

  10. Zaphod:

Tetraethyl lead (airborne from leaded gasoline) and lead in paint. Tetraethyl lead gets inhaled and ingested (soil, etc), paint chips with lead get ingested. Typically inhalation is a more efficient route of exposure to toxins IIRC. Why BIPOCs are supposedly particularly afflicted, I don’t know. Not my primates not my circus.

  11. In the Caribbean, which is commonly slightly less than 50% African, same East Indian, the rest Anglo white, Lebanese, and Chinese (single digits %) – this is called, ‘Wrong-and-strong’. Because the Caribbean also has strong cultural connections to Central/South America and the culture of machismo, it has definite appeal to men, especially men who don’t have much going for them.

In smaller societies, institutions are commonly corrupt. ‘Wrong-and-Strong’ is a way of making successes in such a setting, where moral rectitude is for church people.

Wrong and Strong. It doesn’t work, and as Loury says, it’s infantile. You are not the lion.

  12. zaphod Not talking about excuses However the issue is what might be considered “going off”. Brainless, pointless violence. And committed by women as well. Brawls at McDonalds or Chucky Cheese aren’t exclusively males.
I’d be interested in when lead-based paint–you should talk to a contractor about mitigation procedures–began to be used. I’m told it tastes sweet which is why kids might chew on window sills Sixty years ago, almost, I repaired windows and saw odd marks on window sills in FHA repos in downtown Detroit. Figured the kids were bored or something.
The other groups you mention got out of the old places, or fixed them up.

So, the question is whether Drum’s research was correct. There used to be a show on television about stealing cars. Cops would leave a “bait car” out which could be disabled remotely. Easy peasy. I haven’t seen it for some years–don’t watch much TV but I heard it was cancelled because too many black guys jumped at an unforeseen opportunity. Ask yourself as a rational human being; what are you going to do with a car not your own that makes your future better. I suppose you could sell it to a chop shop which is probably run by the cops anyway to pull in guys dumb enough to do it. But would the average guy walking down the street even know where one is? Or that such business exists? He sees the possibility, jumps at it with no thought for more than one minute ahead. Maybe sell it to somebody else who’s dumb enough to buy stolen property which is so obviously traceable.
If such crimes are disproportionately found in a particular group, then something differentiates that group from other groups. Could be lead paint. Could be parts of the culture.
But when you see screaming, hair-pulling brawls among black women, the BAMF thing fails to cover the issue.

  13. @Richard Aubrey:

Quick look at YouTube, Instagram, FB, TV shows that Young White Skanks have lost most inhibitions too. Just Blacks tend to be worse. Per usual.

Uncontrolled female sexuality is a rapid accelerationist civilizational sink.

A good deal of what’s going on out there is censored out of polite discussion — especially on the Conservative side of politics. Additionally we live in a Gynocracy where women can do virtually no wrong and it’s Wrongthink to even bring this up.

You’re certainly right that Lead Poisoning is a Bad Thing. I just don’t think it sufficiently explains what we’re seeing out there in the world. And yes of course there are cultural aspects to Black behaviour. But I’d argue that given their population mean lower IQ and observed propensity for violence and Time Preference issues, a stronger more paternalistic culture ought to be imposed upon them for their own and everyone else’s good.

Culture is downstream of Race (If you’re not very smart, you’re not going to have any kind of High Culture) and then feeds back into it given that we as a species at least in much of the world have escaped (for now) Darwinian selection and selection works on us at the sexual and group levels more.

  14. Richard Aubrey asks “So, the question is whether Drum’s research was correct.” Exactly.

Kevin Drum’s research got strongly argued for in a Denver Philosophy Meetup group in which I was long a member.

I recall that the strongest point was that easy abortion meant that many criminal class recruits were not born to become young men during the late 20th C (resulting in falling violent crime rates in the ‘90s and after) – a point left out of disaggregating cause/effect of lead paint and potential brain damage.

Another racial/ethnic group to help disaggregate causal attribution would be native Americans/ Indians. But I do not recall if this confounding factor was addressed.

Presumably, the urban Indians live near black inner city areas with oldest housing stock, and thus, also, oldest lead paint bedrooms where young kids grew up, before this hazard was identified and remedied.

Places like Minneapolis do have large Native American populations in neighbourhoods like where George Floyd died. This was also true in cities like Omaha, Des Moines, Milwaukee, and Detroit I believe.

So, there’s that check on the hypothesis to run down. Namely, did crime rates among Indians fall, similarly? Or not?

  15. Something that is important when thinking about the Brooklyn Center case: There were two cases in Minneapolis where a police pursuit led to death or serious injury to people who were just in the wrong place. Thus, the police decided to cease pursuits if the vehicle they sought was driving dangerously.

The result of this was that people knew all you had to do, if the lights come on behind you, is drive like hell.

Traffic enforcement pretty much stopped after the Floyd riots. The most obvious places one would see this were in and around north Minneapolis, which adjoins Brooklyn Center. Drivers passing in intersections, totally ignoring stop signs, and much more.

Now you have these two changes to law enforcement come together in the Brooklyn Center Daunte Wright traffic stop. BC police did *not* stop enforcing traffic laws. They spotted Wright’s expired registration (color coded, easy to see at a distance) and executed the stop.

When they decided to arrest Wright for the outstanding warrant, Wright panicked. He thought that if he just got back into the car and was able to get to Minneapolis, he would be home free. Of course he wouldn’t have been because they had his license and registration. But he wasn’t thinking about that. He was thinking that if he just made it to Minneapolis, he would be fine.

  16. WUT!? – More Than A Third Of Liberals Believe 1000+ Black Americans Were Killed By Police In 2019.

A nationally commissioned survey asked respondents for an estimation of how many unarmed black men were killed by the police in 2019. Forty-four percent of liberals said it was 1000 or more. In reality, the number was actually no more than 27.
The survey, commissioned by Skeptic Mag, asked respondents: “If you had to guess, how many unarmed Black men were killed by police in 2019?”
Among those identified as “Very Liberal,” a majority (about 53 percent) of them estimated that the number of unarmed blacks killed by police in 2019 was one thousand or over, with about 22 percent putting the number at ten thousand or above.
Almost 39 percent of those who were simply “Liberal” guessed “About 1,000”, with a further 12 percent claiming the number was more like 10,000 or more. Approximately 25 percent of self-declared “Moderates”, nine percent of “Conservatives”, and 13 percent of “Very Conservative” Americans estimated at “about” one thousand.
Those listed “Conservative” or “Very Conservative” guessed closest to the actual number.
The numbers are especially galling given the left’s claims to science, data, and reason. In reality, it appears they are far more prone to wild conspiracy theories than the political right.
According to the Washington Post’s own database, the actual number of unarmed black men “fatally shot” in 2019 by police was thirteen (13).
According to the Mapping Police Violence database, which is put together by both data scientists and activists, twenty-seven (27) unarmed black men “were killed by police (by any means) in 2019.”

But I haven’t located it in Skeptic Magazine.

  17. This is not mincing words:

    https://www.unz.com/ghood/we-cant-police-these-people/

“However, no matter how far you run, how earnestly you plead, what you say, or even whom you marry, you will always be white to those with power. That means many despise you. At some point, you must decide to stand or kneel, and a society that kneels before the memory of a George Floyd is not one worth serving or saving.”

Strongly recommend reading the rest of it.

  18. Most black Americans have zero interest in people like Loury and McWhorter.

Black Americans admire people like LeBron James and Lizzo.

  19. Quite so. They and their tastes and predilections are very different. Simple truth is that some peoples just cannot get along together even with the best will in the world. It’s just not in their genes, stars, whatever. To deny this is to be willfully ignorant of human history and human nature.

I’ve seen US Navy port visits in various parts of Asia. Needless to say the R&R crew stick out like the proverbial #@$’s #$$^ wherever that might be. I have *never* seen White and Black Enlisted out on the town together in groups. As soon as they’re off the ship, they self-segregate. With the right selection processes and good training and discipline, Blacks and Whites can coexist in the same space. But it takes effort. It’s Hard Work. Nobody wants to do it on their days off.

People like to be with their own…. Mostly.

Peaceful separate coexistence — absolute Freedom of Association — is about the best bet to avoid conflagration. The Usual Woke Suspects having worked hard to make that illegal, Conflagration is looking more and more likely.

  20. It was an interesting discussion. Except, it is a phenomenon I resolved for myself a long time ago. Within all of us are the memories of our younger selves. I still remember doing stupid things as a young man and playing dangerous hormone-filled games. But, I grew up and matured. When I see young people acting irresponsibly, I understand it. I was once young and irresponsible.

But, unlike McWhorter, I do know what to “do with that”. I don’t excuse it as a “cultural difference”. I give them a verbal slap and tell them to “grow up”.

  21. I enjoy the coverage of the issue in the comment thread. But my question is somewhat more restricted. I’m looking at the instant choice to do something which is violent, pointless, fruitless and which an instant’s thought would demonstrate to be a very bad idea.

One might go back some time to Myron Magnet’s “The Dream and The Nightmare”. It has to do with the idea that removing social restrictions to various behaviors–illegitimacy, etc.–allows for people to mess up their lives and for the lower classes without money, connections, family connections, it is a catastrophe. For the wealthy–who are the ones making “let it all nang out” the new rule, there is always an anchor to windward.

  22. “But when you see screaming, hair-pulling brawls among black women, the BAMF thing fails to cover the issue.” – Richard

Um, I’ve seen screaming hair-pulling brawls among white teen girls, and Hispanic teen girls. The “BA” part certainly applies.

BTW, Candace Owens has come under fire from the Left because she also pulls no punches about the cultural dysfunctions of the black “community” (there are certainly more than one, despite the race hustlers attempts to put everyone in a single melatonin-labelled bucket), especially the “deification” of criminals who get themselves killed by cops.
She is a bit more genteel in her language, but no less passionate.

Her reactions were covered by Neo several times, so just some reminders.

  23. AesopFan. Owens is impressive. Once she stops looking about twelve years old, she’ll be an avalanche.
I get cultural dysfunction . See Sowell, “Conquests and Cultures.
In 1903, B.T. Washington wrote “Two Generations Under Freedom” a lengthy manuscript about black settling in Cass County, in southwest Michigan starting about 1840. The original black settlers were from the Underground Railroad, to a destination arranged by Quakers.
It’s enlightening. It’s encouraging. But he sees the BAMF thing going on among some of the younger guys.
I’m going to reread it and see if there are parallels in the environment, socially or otherwise, to today.

I’m sorry to be so repetitive, but my question isn’t about crime in general. I’m not looking for the lady who nicks $50 per pay period as a township bookkeeper for twenty years. She’s not going to get shot. I’m not talking about a drug dealer with ten years’ experience.
I’m talking about the pointless, fruitless, most likely to fail, instant resort to violence in exactly the situations where an instant’s thought would conclude this is precisely the worst possible time to do this.
Saw some footage of a black guy cornered by police in somebody’s back yard. He was standing there, hands up, cops yelling at him to not move. He shot his right hand down toward is belt and the cops shot him. WTF?

  24. This is a very good discussion. I grew up in a liberal college town in upstate NY, but I had family in the south and went to college in SC in the 80’s. There were several black fraternities on campus and they stood out in the student population. The pledges were dressed to the nines in pressed shirts and dress pants always, no matter the weather, and they were not permitted to speak to anyone outside of the fraternity while they were pledges. I was never sure what the purpose was, at the time I thought it was the Malcolm X influence, but now I wonder if they were prepping these young men for the professional world, teaching them the value of dressing for success and using appropriate language in professional situations. Many were the first in their families to go to college. So different from what we see now.

  25. I never fail to learn something from Loury and McWhorter, but this one is especially powerful: to think that Glenn had a “badass” period he managed to leave behind—and that he’s willing to tell about it on YouTube. If only those who need to listen, will listen, or can listen. Maybe the problem is intractable without sweeping change at the level of family life: sound parental role models, stable employment, etc. Maybe the most that others can do is have a hand in fixing public schools— although they’re so far gone, I don’t have a lot of hope.

  26. Don’t get me wrong, I value a rebellious streak in a citizen, have no use for servility. But Loury gets it exactly right: hysterical acting out isn’t cool, it’s not bad-ass, it’s just infantile loss of control.

That goes double for the wailing over completely predictable and avoidable nasty consequences of making yourself look as dangerous as possible when armed guys are trying to subdue you.

  27. Wouldn’t it be great if they just had the balls to admit that the wholesale slander and stereotyping of cops is 100% wrong? How ’bout we start there? Just start resisting the big lie and the nasty, vile slanders.

Those lies and slanders of the cops are getting lots of blacks killed. Violent crime and murder are way up in black neighborhoods. If anyone actually cared about black lives and thought they mattered, that would be the first obvious truth to affirm.

Stop the slanders that are getting blacks killed.

  28. From Zaphod (down to JanMn), above.

I blame Whitie, but Lincoln was still correct: let the races self-segregate, like back to Africa, to Liberia or to the Caribbean island of your choice (Cuba may be ripe for reinvention soon). We cannot co-exist. Just separate the races because Whitie.

I’m totally sick and disgusted by American self-absorption and race mongering obsessions.

Now, it’s a self-destruction-suicide pill for nothing, enforcing groupthink codependency forever. And I blame sick-souled Leftocratic Whitie.

“Damn you All to Hell!” As one ape-man once uttered to another ape-man.

  29. This info is at the end of the video, but it goes past in a hurry.
    Transcripts available here.

    Great conversation, of course.
I was reminded that Thomas Sowell was something of a radical before getting “converted” away from socialism, but I don’t think he was ever as far gone into the milieu of the ‘hood as Loury details in his own story. I wish he had told us what turned him around.
Guess we’ll have to wait for his memoir to come out.
I’m sure it will be censored by Amazon.
