Important candy announcements — 25 Comments

  1. Yecch.

Candy shouldn’t be eaten more than twice a year. Heath bars and Hershey with almonds if that.

  2. Of course Halloween and Thanksgiving are going to be cancelled this year so there is that.

And turkey flavored candy is just plain gross. Like all the weird flavored popcorn. Some things are good just the way they were originally designed.

  3. Candy corn. Hands down my favorite candy. And I love the Brach’s pumpkins, too. I buy a bag every year and send to my son (yeah, the lefty English professor).

But turkey dinner candy corn? Why????? It reminds me of the weird-flavored Jelly Bellys, like buttered popcorn and jalapeno. Again, why? If I want buttered popcorn, I’ll just eat that.

My best friend from high school loved Necco wafers. Funny, Neo, you always remind me of a much smarter version of me!

  4. When I saw those candy corns, first I wondered what Neo would have to say about them. Then I realized that all over America, the few, the proud, the fellow Neo readers, would be wandering by those strange little Brach’s candy bags and thinking the same thing . . .

  5. We don’t purchase candy very often because I eat it and I like most every kind of candy, especially the little Reese’s Peanut Butter things that are not wrapped up. As for a lot of strange flavored candy corn, the real stuff is towards the bottom of my preferences and when it come to Necco wafers I remember them from the candy at the local public swimming pool when I was a kid, they only had stuff that would not melt which included the Necco wafers which tasted like flavored sawdust discs.

  6. OldTexan:

If you put regular candy corn in front of me I will eat it till it’s gone.

And what’s wrong with flavored sawdust discs?

  7. If you remember Necco wafers, you probably remember Sky Bars. They’re back, too! They were originally made by the same manufacturer. Afterwards, the intellectual property for Sky Bars was purchased, sort of as a lark, by the proprietor of a small gourmet store in Massachusetts. She has built a Sky Bar factory next door, and they went online about a year ago. You can walk in to buy some, or mail order by the box. I don’t know if they have a distribution network. Fun for people who remember them!

  8. My weakness is spice drops and those stupid Swedish fish. Best strategy is to not even buy them.

  9. Neo…can you eat white chocolate? If so, M & M’s has candy corn flavor that usually comes out for Halloween. It should be showing up in stores soon. It’s my favorite.

  10. Candy corn, hmmm. I only eat the chocolate part. And Necco wafers are only good for gingerbread house roof tiles.
Now please, somebody bring back the Black Cow!

  11. Green-bean-flavored candy corn… ewwwww.

Halloween candy has been on the seasonal shelves at my local grocery for a few weeks now. I go for the Dove dark chocolate lozenges. Those are my cocaine. This super-early stocking of Halloween candy has been a bit fortunate for me because they have these season-special packages which, with the chain’s house card discount, are even less per pound than the big bags of the same Doves. Of course, given how much chocolate I’m eating these days, I’m sure I’ve yielded back all the financial gains from the discount, with interest.

  12. Rocky Road’s my hanker. Made my own from scratch once, even made my own marshmallow. It was OK, but it was no Rocky Road.

To me, Candy Corn (or is it Korn?) is in the same league as those odd-ball, puffed up “peanuts” made up of some combination of sugar, cornstarch, something else.

For us Catholic kids, the Necco Wafer made for some sacrilegious fun; but we were too young to care.

They have quite a few from the memory banks here.

Their Necco wafers are temp. out of stock, but they’ve got the old Necco candy buttons on the paper tape.

And Yes: they have Mello-creme candy corn. Original (3lb / $12.99), S’Mores, Blackberry flavors, and Pumpkins.

Lots of older candies here. Life Saver Butter Rum is another old favorite.

  14. Not a Candy Corn fan am I, but I do have to question the decision for this new special flavor! To those that love the stuff, and I’m married to one, it was not in need of improvement.

Now, NECCO wafers, I’m all in on those!

  15. I like Mary Jane’s and Bit ‘o Honeys. My wife bought me a couple of tubs of Bit ‘o Honey candies. But I haven’t been able to find the Mary Jane’s.

  16. Back in the day people used to say you could use Necco wafers in place of quarters in the Illinois Toll Road collection baskets. I never tried it.

  17. NOTE TO NEO – for some reason, the Amazon link doesn’t show up on my sidebar where it ought to be (although your text about it does).
Is anyone else having a problem with this?
Wanted to buy some stuff via your portal and couldn’t do it!

  18. AesopFan:

If you use an ad blocker, you might need to disable it for this site.

If that doesn’t work, try another browser.

  19. Worked after I put you on the ad-blocker’s “good” list.
PS – I was cleaning out some boxes and found a bag of candy corn from last year!
    Win-win.

  20. I had some Necco wafers a few weeks back. I was deliriously happy when I saw them. Love the chocolate, but haven’t seen them around yet.
