Tonight’s debate — 18 Comments

  1. The female vocalist singing the Star Spangled Banner tonight was OK. The choir last night was atrocious. Not so much because they were bad singers (maybe) but because their scored arrangement and “stylings” were so very bad.

  2. Last night’s debate had at least three “moderate” candidates who did a good job of challenging the three progressive leaders. That made it interesting. In tonight’s debate, everyone except Biden, is on the same progressive page. Consequently, the debate is boring. The only “debate” is that they’re all ganging up on Biden.

  3. What I especially hate about the debates of modern politics is that the “winners” are determined by the best “gotcha” lines. There is no real room for debate.

  4. I dipped in a couple of times. Managed to catch my governor, Jay Inslee, acting certifiable about climate change. He and Al Gore are two peas in a pod. Jay’s saying the same things, just 19 years later. Al told us we only had ten years back in 2000. Oops! And of course Jay throws around the word science like he knows what it means. Sleepy Jay, as he’s called by Republicans here in the People’s Republic of Puget Sound, was trained as a lawyer. He knows nothing about science. The longer he’s on the campaign trail the better. Keeps him from coming up with nutty ideas to harass the citizens here with.

Slow Joe looks like a contender. They all attacked him tonight. I don’t think anyone managed to damage him much. Bad as he is, he sounds much more sane than most of them and has the gravitas of age that sets him apart on tonight’s stage. We’ll see what the polls say.

  5. Sheesh. I saw a headline a little while ago saying that Biden was being criticized for that remark, and did not see what might have been offensive about it. If so inclined, one could take it as patronizing, I guess. If so inclined, one could take it as a sort of compliment: you’re young and strong and I’m old.

Either way, to make a big deal of it…as Hunter Thompson often said, bad craziness.

  6. If it did hurt him, it was probably because he begged for mercy as soon as she came on. That’s what is going up against Trump in 2020? Reminds me of an old Berke Breathed cartoon.

Dem Conventioneer: So who have you got to go up against Reagan-Bush in 84?

Meadow Party spokesman: A penguin and a dead cat.

Dem (looking behind him at Mondale-Ferraro signs): Oh what the Hell (walks through door of Meadow Party convention).

  7. Quite a projection fest these last two nights, as every thing that the Democrats complain Trump is doing–especially “dividing the country,” “putting children in cages,” separating families” is something that has actually been done by the Democrats, their rhetoric, their attempts to stir up racial animosity, and to divide and Balkanize this country into a number of competing, warring tribes, and Obama’s immigration policies.

  8. It’s not hard to visualize Elizabeth Warren as an incarnation of Carrie Nation.

  9. Lizzie Warren took an axe
    and gave old Bernie
    forty whacks
    and when she saw
    what she had done
    she gave old Joey
    forty one

  10. Carrie Nation – Lizzie Warren – Lizzy Borden if you have to axe you don’t get it. Racist!

  11. Female progressive temperance crusaders waving signs saying, “lips that touch liquor shall never touch ours,” managed to amend the US Constitution to ban alcohol, calling it a “noble experiment.” We know how that went.

But, to Buttigieg somehow Prohibition and it’s repeal was a good thing, “This is a country that once changed its Constitution so you couldn’t drink and changed it back because we changed our minds, and you’re telling me we can’t reform our democracy in our time. We have to or we will be having the same argument 20 years from now.“

Hmm, the language also harkens Chamberlain’s “peace in our time” and we know how that went too.

But hey, appeasement, morality police, socialism, they just didn’t do it right.
