  1. I like the early-middle Roman Republic period much better than what came afterward.

“For Romans in Rome’s quarrel spared neither land nor gold,
Nor son nor wife, nor limb nor life, in the brave days of old.
    Then none was for a party; then all were for the state;
Then the great man helped the poor, and the poor man loved the great.
Then lands were fairly portioned; then spoils were fairly sold:
The Romans were like brothers in the brave days of old.”

  2. If this doesn’t make you lose your breakfast, well you are out of touch or something:

    from PJ Media:
‘A Norwegian parliamentary official has nominated the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for the Nobel Peace Prize this week despite Israeli intelligence allegations that UNRWA employees were involved in the October 7 attack by Hamas against Israel.”

Another institution destroyed by mindless people.

  3. That was a good two hundred years or so

From the gallic sack to the death of the gracchi

  4. @F – The UN became worthless long, long ago. Never really worth much from the start. More of a feel-good thing. Those always corrupt.

  5. Gadi Taub, Tablet Mag, “Israelis Won’t Stand for Anything Short of Victory in Gaza”: https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/israel-middle-east/articles/israel-hostages-victory-gaza-war

The Biden administration recently tasked CIA Director William Burns with brokering an ambitious deal that, as The Washington Post reported, would include the release of all the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza in exchange for a six-week ceasefire, the release of Palestinian prisoners at a 3-to-1 ratio, the repositioning of Israeli troops in Gaza, and an increase in humanitarian aid to the Strip. All this spells an end to the war short of an Israeli victory—which is to say, it would be a victory for Hamas.

Against the backdrop of this American initiative, internal scuffling has resumed in Israel. The U.S. posture reinvigorated the belief among die-hard Israeli supporters of the “two-state solution” that what they cannot sell to voters will now be more easily imposed on an Israel chastened by a deal which would in effect spell an Israeli defeat. This hope has seduced some of them into making a gross political miscalculation: a chillingly cynical attempt to leverage the suffering of the hostages and their families in order to promote the deal that would stop the war.

  6. Here in Colorado another smart Dem is proposing a tax of $8.50 on each pet in your household. That is the basic tax, it goes up if the pet isn’t neutered, or does not have a care giver (what ever that means). The proposed tax is so broad that if you have a tank of fish the tax is to be charged on each fish. No idea how they would know how many fish you have, maybe brake your door down to count them. It might even mean a tax on how many cows, pigs, sheep you have.

  7. Where in the World is Alissa Heinerscheid?

She was the Annheuser-Busch VP whose trans marketing campaign last spring killed around 30% of Bud Light sales.

The most recent web mention I can find is from last September. She has not been officially “fired” but no one knows where she works or even where she is.

Apparently she is in some sort of witness protection program for marketing execs who tank their company and their brand.

Here’s a video from an interesting guy who analyzes what people say and how they say it.

  8. Are ants in an Ant Colony considered pets in Colorado? Or Brine Shrimp? Are there regulations regarding how many pets are allowed per “care giver?”

They always have “good” intentions don’t you know.

  9. Wonderful. Plus a lead to an interesting series. A reminder of the power of the Internet to deliver amazing things available to the entire planet via a thin slab of glass and metal held in one’s hand.

If the video was even an approximation of the actual building, it is still breathtaking…something that would be a challenge even for the engineers and architects of the 21st century. Everyone should take a few minutes and do a search for images for “ruins of the baths of carcalla” and the results are stunning indeed.

    Thanks, Neo.

Now, let’s wait for the inevitable posting on UFOs……

  10. “And another one rides the bus.” To a new job, after destroying Bud Lite.

But we have a junta full of the Ivies, failing upward.

  11. OM, yes the proposed law is that broad.
Actually, the county I live in does regulate how many pets like Dogs and Cats you can have. Others do to. My Wife and I don’t have any Cats, Cats have us.

  12. huxley:

Having lived in Salt Lake City for a time I spoke of them as natural things, not the beings from the back of comic books (AKA graphic novels) of my youth.

    Sea Monkeys
    indeed they are.

  13. om:

In 7th grade I ordered Sea Monkeys from the back page of a comic book.

Imagine my surprise … or lack thereof.

  14. Some good news / bad news from Hollywood…

    * Stars, Gwyneth Paltrow and Gal Gadot, are standing up for the women sexually brutalized by Hamas.

    * Paltrow and Gadot are being attacked furiously for doing so, often by the #MeToo crowd.
    _______________________________________

Who in Hollywood will stand with Paltrow and Gadot? Not many. #MeToo solidarity has evaporated into thin air. Either out of ideology or fear, few stars are willing to speak up for Israel’s women. As the Jewish Chronicle reports, some in showbiz admit ‘privately’ that they fear the ‘backlash and potential threat to their lives’ that might follow advocacy for Hamas’s victims.

“The left’s grotesque betrayal of Jewish women”

Paltrow has said her share of brain-dead Hollywood stuff, so I find this pleasantly surprising. However, turns out her father was Jewish, she comes from a long line of Jewish rabbis, she was raised Jewish and Christian, and has converted to Judaism.

Her mother is actress, Blythe Danner. Didn’t know that.

    Gal Gadot is Israeli.

  15. Well it’s clear the recreation of those baths is phony — there’re no homeless people sleeping on the grass. what civilized country exist without homeless?

olingancella: I will be sure to send to send you a DM when I ‘feel good” about the UN.

  16. “In 7th grade I ordered Sea Monkeys from the back page of a comic book”

Haha. Should have ordered the spectacular 2 complete armies of Revolutionary War soldiers. Continentals, Redcoats, Hessians, Mohawks and artillery. All in their amazing 3 dimensional 4 color glory just like the illustration.

    And only 3 dollars!

Amazing how they got it all in a little 4x4x4 box when my civil war set was in box that must have been almost 3 feet long.

“I told you that, didn’t I” was pretty much all my dad had to say as I opened the package in mortified disbelief at the cheap shit monochrome flat breakable plastic figures that actually arrived.
[ I having pestered him to distraction until he relented and let me send in my saved up money]

To make it worse, he had just left a business meeting to take me to the doc to have my lip stitched up; as I had gotten injured by climbing up the chute section of a high slide in a park at the school year-end picnic. In direct contravention of the teacher’s repeated instructions of course. Never figured some skinny giddy dweeb would have the temerity to slide down into me as I was perforing my chute ascending stunt. With my tooth sticking through my lip after the impact on the hand rails/chute curb, it never even occured to me to retaliate.

The box was awaiting me as we returned home from the doc. Some consolation at least, I thought: for about 30 seconds.

Never trust an effen weakling. Or a comic book ad.

  17. Had spent some time about a year ago surfing the Internet in search of any remaining architecture from Visigothic Spain. There’s not much.

But I was surprised to find that there are a number of buildings in pretty good shape from Late Antiquity in Ravenna Italy and environs. No doubt a number of Neo’s well travelled readers have visited them and even seen the circa 540 prototype for Charlemagne’s Palatine Chapel.

Then of course, there is Hagia Sophia and whatever will become of that.

If the current pope has his way, maybe they will finally be able to finish off what was for some centuries interrupted.

  18. Ha. Even though I quoted Huxley I missed the part about 7th grade.

I dont think one is 7 or 8 iyears old n 7th grade, so no, it would be sea monkeys for him by then, and not toy soldiers.

  19. Shades of Ralphie and the secret decoder ring in A Christmas Story. I bet the comic book X-ray specs didn’t work either.

  20. Nor did the comic book Polaris Submarine (a cardboard box).

But bicycle spoke/match head guns “worked.” They would put your eye out. Chewing on a rubber balloon killed a neighbor’s son.

    Surviving childhood.

  21. Re: Sea Monkeys

    DNW:

My Sea Monkeys did come to life and stayed alive for a few months. So they were minutes of fun and mildly educational. They are still being sold.

    I have no regrets.

  22. The inventor of Sea Monkeys in 1960 was a curious fellow named Harold von Braunhut, who had previously managed novelty acts, including a mentalist called the Great Dunninger.

Von Branhut actually created his own hybrid brine shrimp and the secret sauce which when added to water creates the environment allowing the shrimp cysts to come out of dormancy and live.

Von Branhut also created X-Ray Spex! He had 193 patents. He was a marketing whiz for using comic books so effectively.

Then it gets stranger. Von Branhut was Jewish and an active white supremacist! He founded the National Anti-Zionist Institute, a publication which had the same mailing address as used for buying Sea Monkeys.

  23. My favorite all-time treatment of this childhood drama:

“Nuts” was a strip for the old “National Lampoon” which was later collected into a book. Absolutely brilliant evocation of growing up as a kid in the 50s.

I can’t recommend it highly enough. God bless Gahan Wilson.

No, they did not work, though I/we tried those out at a bit later age.

The pal my dad referred to as “Your hoodlum friend” and I bought them knowing they were a joke. But they served their purpose when we went to the house of the third member of our trio, and put them on in front of his older, complete knockout bikini lounging sisters.

How that goofball had playboy bunny quality or better older sisters must have been a fluke of nature. Anyway we got all the feigned outrage and attempts to get the X-Ray glasses off our faces that we were seeking. That was almost as good as racing our pretend motocycle high handle bar banana seat bikes up dirt hills.

The worst purchase a couple years later were some pellet pistols made in Germany. Figured they would be ok even if not equal to the Sheridans we shot everything up with. They looked something like, or so we imagined, a .32 Beretta or Walther. A knurled-head pin screw was removed from the back of the breech and a pellet was inserted and the pin screwed back in. The pistol was cocked by pushing a cylindrical barrel into the barrel frame against the strong force of a spring.

When you squeezed the trigger, the inner barrel would spring forward, and the pellet plop out about 3 feet distant. We tried every possible sequence of cocking and loading and nothing effen worked.

The pistols looked ok, were heavily and well built, and were completely useless. 5 bucks wasted.

Well, Ill be, someone somewhere found one in a drawer and put it up on the internet

  25. From the “AI / Philosophy / Classics / Vesuvius” File, we have something truly fascinating….
    “First passages of Herculaneum scroll are DECIPHERED by AI: Students use program to read more than 2,000 words on charred papyrus buried by Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79AD;

  26. It is indeed perplexing.
(Though some might say “miraculous”…pace Ben Gurion…)

The question of course is, How long can this theater continue?
(In other words, MUST THE SHOW GO ON?”…AKA…How long can “Biden” keep those plates—knives?—he’s been juggling up in the air?)
…The ESSENTIAL PROBLEM being that far, far too many are still under La GRANDE Illusion that “Biden” is an ally of Israel—old habits die hard—but maybe they should first ponder whether “Biden” is an ally of the USA…
…and then draw some difficult, even if they really shouldn’t be—not at this stage (actually, not at ANY stage)—conclusions…

File under: Numbers 24:10-11 (or for the full “production”, Numbers 22:2 – 24:25)?

  27. Yes the current Post would say to Esther its not thaf bad or Moses pipe down Rsmses hes a swell chap

  28. Except that “Biden” was never an ally.
    Not of Israel.
    Not of the USA.
(Did a pretty good job of faking it, it’s true; but it’s pretty evident that “he” NOW believes “he” has “MORE FLEXIBILITY”…. Well, we shall see….)

  29. This is just my view:

A mother in Michigan has just been found guilty of- “not stopping her 15 year old son”, from killing his classmates”, in a mass killing.

    This court decision is nonsense.

Did she + the boy’s father, take classes in- [how to keep your children from killing or murdering people?]
    I don’t think so.

Who would even offer classes like that?

This is all about the fact that this teen killer, killed people WITH A GUN.

OK…..what if he had killed them with- a car, with fire, or with a [sword he bought at a tag sale?]…would his parents be tried + arrested + found guilty, if he killed/murdered people with those items?

    No.

This is all about: many of the people of Michigan, + some Michigan lawyers, [HATING civilians owning guns].

They hate it that [my words]- most US civilians can own guns…by their rights, so they want to make as many court convictions, + restricting laws,…as they can, to take gun-ownership-rights away from The people of the US.

Oh wait- a friend of mine is 30, and lives with his parents.

His parents had better watch out…if he shoots at people, then his parents could get 15-60 years in prison as well.

This court decision is a travesty.

This court conviction should never have happened.
