  1. Re: Leonard Cohen album photo

I always love the arm dangling over the windowsill connected to the hand with a cigarette dangling into the dark abyss.

(Cohen had stopped smoking years before, but when he saw the writing on the wall … well, why not.)

  2. When I was a progressive, I knew I was supposed to hate Newt Gingrich (“Newt, Newt, he doesn’t give a toot” –Garrison Keillor) so I didn’t know much about him. But, to the extent I listened, I could tell he was a smart guy.

I also don’t know where he stands with conservatives — he seems to be controversial there as well. But here he is, four days ago on Fox, explaining the desperation of the Democrats to Laura Ingraham.

Is that like the Bonfire of the Vanities?
    ______________________________________

This is about [Democrats] survival. This is literally the behavior of an entire system which understands that it’s on the verge of being destroyed.

They are looking at what happened in Italy, they are looking at what just happened in Argentina. There is a worldwide movement looking at radical socialist values. Average, everyday people are saying, no, we don’t want this.

You look at the numbers for Trump and they are getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

And I think what you are seeing on the left is a desperation that is literally a survival function.

We’ve never seen this. Maybe the South in 1860. But other than that we have never seen this level of desperation in American politics. And it’s going to get worse.

They have a candidate who is hopeless. If you watch Joe Biden, you know, he’s not going to win and they can’t get rid of him. They have an opponent who is getting stronger and better and more disciplined. And I think we are seeing an explosive moment in American history.

It’s hard to understand how the modern left went through this permutation where they are so radically isolated they are losing Latinos, young Americans, Asian Americans, all the groups they thought they could count on thinking “These guys are nuts” and they are not going to vote for them.

  3. Huxley, I think it is more whistling in the dark.

    SHIREHOME:

    Could be.

Re: 2024 — I suspect we all are. I’m pretty nervous about it.

Gingrich is correct that the situation is explosive.

  4. let them leave out of Gaza and go someplace (Egypt or transit from there) where food is plentiful

No doubt there’s loads of loving Muslim majority nations and/or UN member states who would leap at the chance to take in 2 million poor, ornery Gazites with little-to-no marketable skills and a history of resentment and belligerence to their hosts.

    The UN should be disbanded.

  5. Re: huxley’s link to Gingrich’s statement.

I can’t agree with Newt. They know what they have and are not panicking, but laying the groundwork for the fall. Look at the article this am on Fox about how Pennsylvania is all set for massive ballot stuffing. Hmmm…. a new respiratory virus just in time for the election. If Joe’s the candidate, no problem for Obama and the rest. He will win one way or another. And if by some instance Joe goes, then Kamala will be just as useful of a puppet. I will vote next fall, but have no faith in the outcome to be a fair election. We are pass the time to vote ourselves out of this mess, sadly.

  6. @physicsguy, while I’m nowhere near as sanguine about 2024 as Newt Gingrich seems to be, I’m also not as pessimistic about the situation as you appear to be. As insurmountable as they may appear to be at times (especially after last years depressing election results), the Deep State and the Democrats and the Media are not in fact omniscient and omnipotent gods.

I guess my point is that as unrealstic as it is to be overly optimistic, it’s also unrealistc to be overly pessimistic. Events rarely play out exactly the way we imagine they will. How often in life have your predictions been wrong? I know I’ve been wrong about my predictions many times. Although psycologically sometimes it’s better to expect things will turn out badly and be pleasantly surprised when they don’t, I prefer to try to be as objective about things as I possibly can, whether I like it or not.

  7. I think the fix is in. They have been slowly figuring out over the years how to cheat in presidential elections, and in 2020, they got it.

2008: Some states I think were used as experiments on HOW to cheat. Coming into the election, they were already aware that they only needed to concentrate on a few districts. But look at Indiana — it was not a crucial state, and probably wouldn’t have made any difference, so it was a great place to experiment on HOW to cheat. Marion and Lake counties, deep blue counties in the state, had over 105% of eligible people registered to vote. Those were the two counties that put Indiana over the top into Obummer territory. I am sure there were other states/districts that “they” experimented with.

2012: I think the experiment expanded, but really more as testing the waters as they were pretty confident that Obummer would be reelected.

2016: I am sure they cheated, BUT… they never thought that their girl could possibly lose. So I don’t think they were quite as dedicated to the cheat as they were four years later.

2020: They spent the four years prior really working on it. They knew they really only had to focus on a few states. No matter what, California, New York, and Illinois were in the bucket — they knew they didn’t have to do too much there. There were other thoroughly blue states they could count on: Massachusetts, Maryland Connecticut, Washington, New Jersey, etc. They just had to concentrate on Wison, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and North Carolina. They didn’t quite cheat ENOUGH in North Carolina but I think they learned their lesson there — cheat more!

And I think they will try harder in 2024. And as far as I can tell NOTHING has been done anywhere to prevent the cheating next year.

    We are so screwed.

  8. I can’t agree with Newt. They know what they have and are not panicking, but laying the groundwork for the fall.

    physicsguy:

You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one!

I also read Democrats and some of them are panicking. Other Dems are trying to talk those Dems off the ledge.

As a leftist back in the 70s/80s I was committed, but deep down I was sure we were a plucky band of underdogs doing the right thing, but doomed to lose. Beautiful losers.

Lo! My comrades now run the Western world. I lost my religion and got off the glory train, just as it was taking off.

    Things change.

  9. These are evil people look at their works they will rest at nothing to destroy this country

  10. I think the fix is in.

    Someone Else:

I’ve no doubt there are Democrats who toileth day and night. No doubt.

But I don’t consider it a sure bet. If Democrats thought they had a sure thing, would they be trying so hard to put Trump in prison for the rest of his life? At the same time accusing Trump (and by implication his supporters) of intending to execute his political enemies?

I say unto ye, Democrats like to think of themselves as the Good Guys (as well as the Smartest People in the Room). They would prefer not to go to such extremes, but, well, you MAGA types forced them to!

I read this as Democrat desperation. Others may do otherwise.

  12. The actions of government agencies aka Deep State, the Obama administration (now undercover), and social media are worse than anyone could have imagined before the Twitter Files began peeling back the layers.

  13. A very good analysis of where Ukraine is in their war and what is needed for the next several years from someone who fully supports the Ukraine effort. Much of the concern is whether or not the US will continue its support but whether or not Europe has the will to support the war over the next few years should be a greater concern, IMO.

I think most people recognize there will be a settlement of the war– short of Ukraine’s stated objectives. Dr. Justin Bronk makes a valid case why this would be a poor time to force that settlement.
He points out that Russia has committed to a war economy. He points out that if Russia has not been deterred by 300,000 casualties and is gearing up for a long war, why should the West think any settlement wouldn’t be disastrous and likely short lived.

The first 10 minutes or so Dr. Bronk talks about the readiness of various air forces. The focus then shifts to Ukraine being able to make best use of the 200 or so F16’s pledged to the war and then the need for increased armament production.
What Dr. Bronk doesn’t address is whether or not three more years of war will raise the prospects of a ceasefire more favorable to Ukraine.

The Ukraine-Russia War has been relegated to page 6, as the immediate concern, rightfully so, is with Israel and the destruction of Hamas as a terrorist organization.
What is surreal in all of this are the calls by the left for Israel to end its war, a war that Israel has found itself engaged in for slightly more than a month, while the Ukraine-Russia War which burst on the scene with the failed blitzkrieg by Russia 18 months ago had been simmering from nearly 10 years. Crickets from the left.

Ignoring the situation in Ukraine will not make any resolution easier or better.

  14. These are evil people look at their works they will rest at nothing to destroy this country

    miguel cervantes:

Oh, I’m sure they will settle for running the country for the next 70 years as PRI did in Mexico.

  15. From the article AesopFan linked:

The whistleblower alleges that a leader of CTI League, a “former” British intelligence analyst, was “in the room” at the Obama White House in 2017 when she received the instructions to create a counter-disinformation project to stop a “repeat of 2016.”

One more data point that proves that the election of Trump in 2016 absolutely surprised and terrified the new global nobility. These would be Masters of the Universe believed themselves to be the smartest and best people, both omniscient and wise. And they believed their positions of power were completely unassailable. Hillary Clinton had been chosen. All had been set and planned carefully.

So they essentially formally decided to start an information war in January 2017. How has that gone for them so far do you suppose? Would you say that in general ordinary people are more trusting or less trusting of information from mainstream sources in 2023 than they were in 2017? Are they really as smart and all knowing as they believe they are?

  16. Because Roosia can accept 600,000 casualties? Otay.

Sounds unsustainable, even before they get to that macabre milestone.

But they are trying to meat their body count in Avdiivka. Armies break under such conditions.

  17. Because Roosia can accept 600,000 casualties? Otay.

    om:

According to Peter Zeihan that means the Russians have just gotten warmed up for the real fight!

  18. One more data point that proves that the election of Trump in 2016 absolutely surprised and terrified the new global nobility.

    Nonapod:

That is huge and IMO underappreciated by conservatives.

Again, Trump and MAGA made the elites do it.

Obama was a Fabian-style socialist. One sure step at a time towards Utopia.

But Trump forced them to roll the dice NOW.

  19. Back in 2008 I was in mourning for this country, knowing about Obama’s relationships with radicals.
I remember my late paternal grandfather who was a veteran of WW2 , a patriot ,and a very devout Christian, saying with wet, sorrowful eyes that ” This country is going to get what it deserves.”
Understand, my grandfather was not the type of Christian that only read a few happy verses in the New Testament and ignored most of the warnings in the New Testament. ( Jesus talked a lot about coming Judgement Day or days, though you would not know it listening to many liberal Christians.)
My grandfather , like generations of Christians before him, read the Old Testament, also. He read the Old Testament prophets who warned ancient Israel of judgement coming . He saw parallels with America and the path we are on.
I got really worked up about the destruction and lies in 2020 surrounding both COVID and the ” social justice ” protest.
    I still do sometimes.
But I am increasingly resigned to the idea things may get really worse. I don’t like it. But in some ways I am not sweating it the same. Well, at least sometimes.
That doesn’t mean I have given up. I recently wrote my state rep about repealing asset seizure without trial – about how wrong that is. I think there are things like that we can focus on. And I have tried to wake some people up about the fake women in female spaces.
But I am not the same as I was in 2008, psychologically. Well, not always.

  20. But I am increasingly resigned to the idea things may get really worse.

    Jon baker:

Me too. There is a reckoning coming and it won’t be pretty.

But I don’t believe we are doomed to being crushed. We are fighting; we will continue. The real battle is still ahead. Meanwhile:

  21. Ayers wright khalidi davis where is the fabian among them?

I don’t recall mentioning any of those.

I said Obama was a Fabian. For instance, he explained to his faithful that full socialized medicine wasn’t possible — yet — so he recommended the next step in that direction.

    Voila — ObamaCare!

  22. Newt had a similar problem to a lot of people in his position. He was a rebel who ended up being part of the Establishment. It didn’t help that maverick conservatism turned into Conservatism, Inc. Still, he was better than Paul Ryan.

One problem with Newt’s optimism is that even if Trump wins, it’s going to be hard for him to find appointees who are at once loyal and competent. The Establishment or the Deep State or the political-corporate elite has thousands of possible replacements for its upper ranks. The other problem is that Democrats’ are once again going to pull out all the stops — legal and illegal, legitimate and fraudulent — to keep Trump from winning. There’s concern among Democrats about what to do about Joe. It comes and goes, depending on how bad a week Biden has and on what the media is saying about him. But I don’t see a deeper existential panic yet.

  23. When one is at war, one can believe that if victory has already cost 300,000 lives, it’s worth another 300,000. Once an armistice has been signed, going to war again and losing another 300,000 lives with no guarantee of victory may not look worthwhile. If Russia keeps much of what they have already taken they may not want another war.

  24. RE: UFO Crash Retrieval Program

If, as David Grusch alleges, there is a deeply buried UFO crash retrieval program, one long in existence, how would such a program work?

There is new reporting out from the UK’s Daily Mail and other sources about just such a program.*

According to this reporting, the CIA’s obscure “Office of Global Access” is able to pinpoint crashed or landed UFOs, even those which are “cloaked,” and then it uses either JSOC, the Joint Special Operations Command, to dispatch military special forces retrieval teams—SEALs, Delta, Special Forces, etc.–to locations all over the world to recover these vehicles, or the task is given to private aerospace companies, who have their own private paramilitary forces (we reportedly have agreements with many countries to allow our forces to intrude into these countries to retrieve these UFO materials), and what is retrieved is usually handed off to such private companies, which, as private companies, are immune to FOIA requests.

If there have been and are such activities by the CIA and by aerospace companies you can see why they would have–as has been reported—a great interest in killing the pending Schumer Amendment to the 2024 NDAA, which asks for all government actions regarding UFOs to be reported, and which also contains language requiring that all such UFO material held by private companies be confiscated using eminent domain.

  25. Newt had a similar problem to a lot of people in his position. He was a rebel who ended up being part of the Establishment. It didn’t help that maverick conservatism turned into Conservatism, Inc. Still, he was better than Paul Ryan.

    Abraxas:

I once thought Paul Ryan was cool. Sigh.

Gingrich was before my time as a conservative. I could surf it, I suppose, but I don’t know where the bodies are buried.

I was impressed that Gingrich was allied, for a while anyway, with Alvin Toffler, the “Future Shock” guy, who made a big impression on me in the 70s.

Of course, we’re all so future-shocked now, that’s old news.

  26. I don’t see Russia taking massive casualties indefinitely. Of course there won’t be an open antiwar rebellion like in the US against Vietnam, but passive resistance – draft dodging, desertion. And general lack of enthusiasm for the task. Defending Mother Russia from Zelensky doesn’t have quite the same urgency as defending it from Hitler.
