  1. I’m seeing a terrible convergence between Gazans voting for Hamas and suffering for it, and American Jews voting for Democrats.
Too late for any Gazans who regret their choice (for whatever reason).
    Too late for American Jews?

  2. Ach, all those abrasions and bruises even with their precautions. Add to that the toe deformities and tendon stretching and… ach!

When I was dancing I always felt sorry for you gals.

I’ll stick with having to lift and carry.

  3. yes that’s not even merely wrong, who thought Newsweek would turn out to be the more sane publication, (under batya sargon)

  4. Is it possible to be on pointe if your second toe is longer than your big toe? It seems that would make being on pointe more difficult.

  5. Anne:

Yes, it’s possible. The best configuration, of course, is having the first two toes of roughly equal length, which isn’t all that common. The flexibility and strength of the entire foot is very important too, as is the strength of legs and torso.

  6. Just watched a bit of the police conference in CA about the Jewish Man’s death at the hands of Antifa. I hope I am wrong but I smell a coverup coming down the pike.

  7. Interesting Headlines from Nov. 4 Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty news feed

  8. New House Committee Emails Show Federal Fascist political speech suppression on Twitter began before 2020 election — “DHS Created Stanford University ‘EIP’ Censorship Group Before 2020 Election – The Gateway Pundit Was Second Most Targeted Outlet” — chart shows amounts reTweets censored from many major media outlets by program, but especially the Right Side news.

CENSORSHIP. In America by our government. What First Amendment?

    It began BEFORE Biden.

THIS is the genesis of the ongoing Missouri AG case on First Amendment censorship in Federal Court.

  9. Here is a discussion, from December 2021, which just came to my attention. The video isn’t up any more, but the transcript is below. Daniel Pipes talks about ex-Muslims, and non-radical Muslims, who criticize radical Islamism, often in Arabic. One of them is Brother Rachid, who appeared in a video Neo recently linked to. Pipes says ex- and non-radical Muslims are having an impact among Muslims.

  10. Both of my daughters danced on pointe for several years and the beating those feet took was horrific. It seemed that they were always dealing with injuries and pain. Oh, and let’s not forget the “stink foot phenomenon….phew!

  11. “Just watched a bit of the police conference in CA about the Jewish Man’s death at the hands of Antifa. I hope I am wrong but I smell a coverup coming down the pike.”

As mentioned on an earlier thread, that’s my fear with the Samantha Woll murder too, or that it will go unsolved, though it’s not obvious that it was anti-Semitic like this one.

  12. Re: Marijuana

    Snow on Pine:

    Great.

Now do alcohol, cigarettes and overeating. Then rank marijuana with those in terms of health damages.

I look forward to your results.

  13. @ Mike & miguel in re Newsweek link:
The post is authored by Liel Leibovitz of Tablet, and he certainly lays out the case against Obama in a nice summary (well, not “nice nice”) — it’s a well-written and succinct presentation of the disasters Obama caused or abetted.

  14. I liked rabbits fur toe pads but you can’t find them anymore. (I was looking for them for earning my toes in boots.)

  15. Looking at the thumbnail of the video, I’m somewhat struck by the girl to furthest right: she reminds me there of a coworker that I met for the first time the other day, who was of a somewhat similar profile, but the thing about her outline – head, shoulders, and so on – was how well-defined and sharp it seemed. She’s very fit, for one thing, being a rock climber and that sort of thing; but the impression was also due to her choice of clothes – the form-fitting off-white knit top – and the fact that she had her hair up in the same way this dancer does.

  16. @ Kate > “Here is a discussion, from December 2021, which just came to my attention. The video isn’t up any more, but the transcript is below. Daniel Pipes talks about ex-Muslims, and non-radical Muslims, who criticize radical Islamism”

Excellent article, and it’s important to consider what Pipes said about the wide disparity among Muslims and not jumping to conclusions about individuals, but it’s very clear that there are some groups which are clearly in the “radical” camp (quotes used because some people believe those are the norm, not the outliers).

His recent posts following 10/7 don’t mention ex-Muslims or non-radicals, but their undercurrents indicate to me that he still believes that Hamas supporters are not the majority in Gaza. He has not mentioned the upwelling of anti-Semitic, pro-Palestinian protests in America and elsewhere.

Right now, though, he is all in for destroying Hamas completely.

See in particular (chronological order beginning in September):
    https://www.danielpipes.org/21875/disarming-hamas-is-an-illusion
“As an outsider, I believe Israelis underestimate the growing impact of Palestinian venom. Yes, Israel’s products – armaments, high-tech, medical supplies, agricultural methods, water technology – have found a global market. Agreed, its military has no regional rival. But these strengths do not release Israelis from the unfinished business of winning Palestinian acceptance. Until then, Palestinian delegitimization threatens Israel no less than Iranian nuclear weapons.

Thus does the Kuperwasser plan potentially enhance the danger Hamas poses to Israel, trading a more violent but less influential enemy for a less violent but more influential enemy. A projectile-less Hamas that still rules Gaza is a cure worse than the disease.”

    https://www.danielpipes.org/21921/israel-opportunity-to-destroy-hamas
“Once Gaza has been secured, Israel would find a great number of its inhabitants ready to start over and build productive lives rather than focus endlessly and hopelessly on the destruction of Israel. Gaza could aspire to become the “Singapore of the Middle East” of which optimists dreamed decades ago. None of this can happen as long as Iran’s medieval minded agents run the enclave.”

    https://www.danielpipes.org/21941/a-decent-outcome-is-possible-in-gaza
“Everyone seems to agree that no good outcome is possible in Gaza. They’re wrong. It’s possible for a decent Gaza-led administration to emerge, which could make autonomy and even statehood possible.”

    https://www.danielpipes.org/21960/poll-has-israel-really-changed
“An apparent sea change took place in the aftermath of Oct. 7, 2023, the day when Hamas massacred an estimated 1,400 Israelis. The idea of Israel attaining a victory over Palestinians went from the margins to the mainstream, from peripheral to consensual. Politicians and polls both support this idea. Israelis seem to be a transformed people. … the Middle East Forum commissioned a poll on October 17 with 1,086 adult Israelis. It found extraordinary support for the destruction of Hamas, for a ground operation to achieve this, and for not making concessions in exchange for formal ties with Saudi Arabia.”

Bonus: new book for sale — some people are not as optimistic as Pipes, but there is no doubt about his knowledge of the subject.

    https://www.danielpipes.org/21956/islamism-vs-the-west

  17. In the 2021 post linked by Kate, Pipes referenced another of his articles, which I recommend (Middle East Quarterly Spring 2017). It was intended as a basis for deciding whether or not to admit visa & asylum seekers into the US, but can be repurposed for evaluating protesters, pundits, politicians, and (possibly) your neighbors.

    https://www.danielpipes.org/17198/smoking-out-islamists-via-extreme-vetting

Note the absence of questions about highly charged current issues. That is because Islamist views overlap with non-Islamist outlooks; plenty of non-Islamists agree with Islamists on these topics. Although Leil Leibowitz in contrast sees Israel as “moderate Islam’s real litmus test,” Islamists are hardly the only ones who demand Israel’s elimination and accept Hamas and Hezbollah as legitimate political actors – or believe the Bush administration carried out the 9/11 attacks or hate the United States. Why introduce these ambiguous issues when so many Islam-specific questions (e.g., “Is the enslavement of non-Muslim acceptable?”) have the virtue of far greater clarity?

  18. neo:

Your clips are always interesting and just a few minutes ago inspired me to ask:

Have you ever had any video/film of yourself doing dance or will we forever be denied that pleasure? 🙂

  19. Funny you should post this today, Neo.
I did a few yoga classes on youtube last winter and found myself really having to work at foot placement. Getting my weight evenly distributed with toes spread out – not clenching or wobbling from side to side. It got me thinking about how important that kind of control is to advanced figure skating. In the old days of actual ‘figures’ weight shifts on the foot were crucial to executing those patterns.
There is a school of thought that ballet training is detrimental to skaters. The thinking behind this is that the ‘turn out’ ballet trains for is not compatible with skating moves which require forward squared hips. I never really agreed with this – the core strength and upper body control learned in ballet more than makes up for the difference in hip orientation. Not to mention flexibility and arm placement!
But the yoga approach to foot placement got me thinking that maybe pointe work is the real issue – that focusing on a single point and arch strength as opposed to developing control over the entire bottom of the foot is where the conflict lies.
And here you come along with this post.
Anyway, now I do my ‘yoga feet’ when I dry off after a shower, switching off from one to the other. Not sure I’ll be using it at the rink – doc says stay away as my bones have become too thin – but maybe it will save me from a fall as I age.
