DeSantis declares as a 2024 Republican presidential candidate — 35 Comments

  1. I can never find where this stuff is explained. What has DeSantis done to indicate that he hates black people? That he is sympathetic to the KKK? What, was he a Democrat once?

  2. Kari Lake ~ “If You Can’t Beat Donald Duck, How Are You Going to Beat Donald Trump?”

  3. Pretty sure that Vanity Fair headline was as much a swipe at Elon Musk (who is obviously racist because of the way he has run Twitter) as at DeSantis.

  4. On re-reading my comment, it’s probably worth pointing out that while I don’t hold that view of Musk, I expect the people who’d write that headline to hold that view.

  5. Vanity Fair hit a new low with that headline but it is no surprise. I used to send each of my female relatives a subscription to Vanity Fair. That was a long time ago. I like DeSantis but will vote for Trump in the primary unless he is forced out by the left’s lawfare. DeS is still a bit suspect in my view but better than anything the Democrats offer.

  6. DeSantis came across as knowledgeable, articulate, and likable. The tech glitches were due to one million people tuning in. The Twitter engineers fixed the tech problem, and all went well after that. Good start, IMO.

DeSantis has kept to the high road. Trump is beating up on him in negative campaign ads. So far, DeSantis has not fired back. Not sure how long he can do that.

I’m looking forward to the GOP debates. All of the declared candidates are far superior to Biden. The debates will demonstrate that.

All GOP candidates will be savaged by the left. Larry Elder and Tim Scott have been called everything but the “n” word, but the MSM will undoubtedly get around to that at some point.

DeSantis has already been described by the left’s pundits as a fascist as bad a or worse than Trump. How bad will the attacks get? I predict much, much worse. They can’t win on the issues. All they have is demonizing their opponents.

  7. I listened a few hours afterwards. Everything seemed fine. Forgot how much I enjoy listening to DeSantis on policy.

    Let’s nominate this guy, please!

  8. DeSantis is one of the few potential Presidential candidates who has personal, legal, military and intellectual competence worthy of supporting as part of the US government. He can reason his way through problems and isn’t just quacking a party line for MSM distribution.

No wonder the Democrats hate him.

  9. “All GOP candidates will be savaged by the left. Larry Elder and Tim Scott have been called everything but the “n” word, but the MSM will undoubtedly get around to that at some point.”

Tim Scott has been accused of virginity– you can’t get much worse than that in the eyes of the Left.

  10. Boobah (10:47 pm) writes on how “that Vanity Fair headline was as much a swipe at Elon Musk (who is obviously racist because of the way he has run Twitter) as at DeSantis.” I’d agree.

In brief, DeSantis is Adolf Hitler and Musk is Joseph Goebbels. Any further questions? Simply consult your obliging legacy media outlet.

  11. Trump is somewhat similar to DeSantis but without the Governor’s baggage of not being able to relate to working-class and middle-class Americans.

  12. Not surprising but probably a good thing. I am divided between which pol to support and whether DeSantis would do more good as President (even assuming he or any right leaning man could get in) or Governor, but I welcome him.

  13. @andrew miller

But with plenty of his own baggage of another sort. I’ve routinely and vocally defended Trump when I think it is warranted, which is most times, but I won’t pretend he does not have his problems or his own sets of baggage.

  14. Despite really liking him as the governor of my new home state, I’m reserving judgement on voting for DeSantis in the primary….FYI, I’m a registered independent but for the first time in over 15 years I’m switching to GOP just to be able to vote in the primary. As of now, I really like Ramaswamy. But then, I’ve always been one to not really go for the popular choice. Trump? For me his time has past and if nominated, he WILL lose.

  15. Just as with Biden, DeSantis is not even DeSantis but, rather, an amalgam of the views of the donors and consultants hovering around him.

  16. I think a lot of people don’t know much about DeSantis and haven’t previously watched him on video. We’ll see how this goes. I am going to send him some money for the primary, and vote for him (unless something drastic changes, which can happen; it’s nearly a year to go).

As to debates, last I heard, Trump was saying he’s not going to participate in a primary debate, being entitled to the nomination.

  17. Can’t believe people here are actually debating whether Trump has baggage or not. Do we live in a dream world?

    – He’s a narcissist
    – He can’t get out of his own way
    – He can’t talk about actual policy for more than a few minutes
    – He’s not a conservative
    – He completely dropped the ball on COVID response

Let’s turn the page, people. For the love of God!

  18. vanity fair is illustrated Kos, with better ads, graydon carter, now takes pot shots from airmail, pretending not to have fluffed weinstein for years,

  19. narcissism for a politician, i’m shocked they went and targeted his whole family, they broke into his house on a phony pretext, you need better material,

  20. DeSantis is likely to be a strong and effective President.

Trump will continue to have success in the hospitality sector.

  21. “Let’s turn the page, people. For the love of God!”

And forget all the lies and corruption, because it will disappear once Trump is gone!!!/SNARK!!

    You deserve Biden.

  22. I’ve noticed on several conservative leaning web sites a counter part to the Never Trumps – the Only Trumps. The Only Trumps are trashing DeSantis as if he is the new Hillary Clinton and proclaiming that they will “only vote for Trump” in the general election. Perhaps everyone should keep an open mind about the GOP field to see how things progress.

  23. During his first term in the White House, in the face of constant attacks from the left and his own party, Donald Trump achieved gasoline prices under $2 a gallon, record low unemployment, inflation under 2%, rising real wages for working-class Americans, a dramatic reduction in illegal immigration, the end of NAFTA, better trade agreements with Mexico and Canada, higher tariffs on products from Communist China, lower taxes on American corporations and small businesses, reduced regulation of American manufacturing and energy production, withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, American energy independence, a significant increase in American military spending, a significant increase in military spending by the other NATO allies, the creation of the United States Space Force, no new wars, reduced missile testing by North Korea, cancellation of the Obama nuclear weapons agreement with Iran, recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the brokering of historic trade agreements between Israel and its Arab neighbors, restoration of quality medical care for veterans at the VA, elimination of the Obamacare mandate to buy health insurance, the right of terminally ill patients to try experimental drugs, the appointment of more than 230 federal judges who believe in following the Constitution, the appointment of three Supreme Court justices who believe in following the Constitution, and a welcoming environment in the Republican Party for good and decent Americans of all races and classes. Seventeen months after Trump left office, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade with a 6-3 vote. Go Trump.

  24. One of my major issues with Trump are that I feel he foolishly walked into a trap set by the FBI with the whole January 6th thing. Having a big “stop the steal” rally at the capitol seemed like a horrible idea to me at the time. I felt it in the weeks leading up to it. I think he should have known better. And to me he hasn’t shown that he has learned from it.

The other major issue I have with him is his general electability. Even with how demostrably awful as Biden is and with general sentiment about him clearly being pretty negative, I think that any Republican candidate will have a significant uphill battle. There are powerful forces arrayed against any would be Republican. Everything from the Deep State, the media, social media, and the various efforts of the Democrat aligned forces with regards to voting itself are all working against anyone who would dare to challenge their power.

That said, my current impression is that DeSantis may be a slightly better choice for the general election. My reasoning for that is that Trump is a very known quantity. At this point the overhwelming majority of voters have an opinion of him that is pretty set in stone. But DeSantis currently is a little bit less well known and therefore there’s more headroom in terms of forming voter opinions on him. DeSantis has a demeanor that contrasts with Trump. He’s much younger. He’s more of a traditional, polished politician in many ways (which I know a lot of people think of as a negative, but I’m focused on voters in the general election). He’s a far more concise and articulate communicator. And he generally lacks all the baggage that Trump has.

That’s not to say the DeSantis is without flaws. I’m just attempting a comparison to Trump in the minds of the general election voters. Because to me, that’s what’s significant. I’d voter for either one over any Democrat and I’m sure that most people around here will agree that either one would be about a billion times better than Biden or Kamala or Gavin Newsome or whomever. But I really believe that people should think about who is more likley to garner more votes in the general election. Try not to get too emotionally invested. I know that’s easy to say.

  25. so out of 50,000 on the mall, 100 or so went into the capitol, half of them were feds, I just don’t think the delta house was a big thing, they didn’t even loot the food king

  26. yadkin:

Cut and paste much? Here, we’re well aware of Trump’s many accomplishments.

  27. DeSantis has more baggage than Trump?

Whoa. I would never have expected a comment like that. I am gobsmacked. What alternative universe did that baggage accumulate in? Sounds like the girl who was angry with her boyfriend because of what he did in her dream.

  28. Trump and DeSantis may both get bogged down in Washington and chewed up by the system: Trump because he can’t focus on politics, DeSantis because he’s too focused on governance. That’s my gut feeling. I can’t prove it and have trouble explaining it. Trump clearly can’t keep himself from being the issue and personally taking center stage all the time. DeSantis may be the dogged fighter whose cunning opponents always confound and get around: not cunning enough, maybe not imaginative enough, to get the better of them.

  29. “DeSantis may be the dogged fighter whose cunning opponents always confound and get around: not cunning enough, maybe not imaginative enough, to get the better of them.”

That’s quite an imagination. There isn’t anything on the record to establish that.

BTW — CNBC is calling the twitter/DeSantis announcement a “Twitter Debacle”. Of course, CNBC hasn’t been honest or fair since it was started, but they do give us a look at the day’s lefty talking points and CW.

  30. Yadkin: that kind of massive paragraph which consists of one run-on sentence is completely unreadable.

  31. cnbc the carnival barkers with the largest horns except for santelli, and perhaps joe kernan, who talked up every one of these frauds like ftx

  32. “DeSantis came across as very knowledgeable, articulate, and likable.”

Yeah, consider the source. From what I read, he did not come across all that well. He’s not a particularly engaging speaker.

The quoted part sounds a lot like a MSM review of Joe Biden.
