  1. For the guys: men’s fashions in 1912 were less colorful than the women’s, but they were certainly 1) cut and constructed to exacting standards, at least for first-class passengers and the Titanic‘s crew; and 2) sharply differentiated along class lines. Here’s a short video about the menswear of the period; what’s particularly interesting is that the captain’s and crew’s uniforms are included along with the upper-class gentlemen’s formal dress and the clothing worn in third class and steerage:

  2. Hat tip CFP — The Florida Standard:

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — Today, a federal judge sided with Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, ruling that President Joe Biden is responsible for the border crisis claiming the president effectively turned the southwest border into “little more than a speedbump.”

In a scathing 100-plus-page opinion, U.S. District Judge T. Kent Wetherell ruled that Biden’s catch-and-release policy is unlawful. The judge gave the administration seven days to comply with federal immigration law.

“Today’s ruling affirms what we have known all along, President Biden is responsible for the border crisis and his unlawful immigration policies make this country less safe. A federal judge is NOW ordering Biden to follow the law, and his administration should immediately begin securing the border to protect the American people,” Attorney General Ashley Moody told The Florida Standard.

The final order from Judge Wetherell of the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Florida states:

“The Court finds in favor of Florida because, as detailed below, the evidence establishes that Defendants have effectively turned the Southwest Border into a meaningless line in the sand and little more than a speedbump for aliens flooding into the country by prioritizing ‘alternatives to detention’ over actual detention and by releasing more than a million aliens into the country – on ‘parole’ or pursuant to the exercise of ‘prosecutorial discretion’ under a wholly inapplicable statute – without even initiating removal proceedings.”

  3. Biden sicced the FTC on Elon Musk in blatant disregard for the first amendment.

Democrats have no respect for the constitution and haven’t for quite a long time. We are in an existential fight against seriously nasty, vicious people.

I don’t see how this is resolved without violence. There is no compromise with people who deny that we have any rights.

  4. To paraphrase another dictator named Joe, “How many divisions does Judge Wetherill have?”

  5. PA Cat,

As extravagant as older clothing styles seem, it also seems people owned much less clothing. The home I grew up in was built in the 1930s with very little closet space. That seems to be the norm until the ’70s or ’80s. In the mid-90s my wife and I built a house (rather standard-fare these days) with a walk-in closet the size of my childhood bedroom.

When I traveled on business in Europe and Asia in the ’90s and ’00s I noticed most of the local employees wore the same outfits multiple days in a row. They dressed well; no business casual, but they seemed to only own one or two business oriented outfits. Based on what I saw of their homes and apartments I assume the same was true regarding formal and casual attire; a few, well made, appropriate options to choose from.

  6. My comment, here, is based on: the news articles I’ve read, and my opinions on these articles, so both may be incorrect, but I’d like to share my opinion on an event, in Mexico.

Recently, four American people were shot at, + then kidnapped, by a drug gang in Mexico.

The 4 people were later found by police, with: 2 of the people dead, and with two of them alive.

Reports say- these 4 people were [likely] attacked, because the drug gang mistook them for members of a local, rival, Haitian, criminal gang.

Here is an article about this event:

    https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/07/americas/mexico-matamoros-us-citizens-kidnapping-tuesday/index.html

This is just my theory, but I think it’s possible- that the Mexican, drug gang, whom I guess, is mostly made up of Latino people or non-Black people- attacked and kidnapped these 4 people because these 4 people were Black people +/or African-American people, in a community, where [maybe the only Black people, +/or African-american people that these gang people regularly see], are from Haitian gangs.

Moreover, according to Wikipedia’s article on Haiti, MOST of the people in Haiti are African-American people, or are descendants of African-American people.

So, my theory is: the Mexican drug-gang saw and attacked these 4 people because the gang members thought:
“You guys are Black people! And the only Black people we ever see here, are from a rival, Haitian drug-gang! So we must kill you or kidnap you, to keep you from doing crimes to our Mexican drug-gang!”

And that would mean- the Mexican drug-gang attacked + kidnapped these people [for looking like Black people +/or African-American people], or for [being] Black people or African-American people…that these gangsters THOUGHT were [in a gang of Black people].

In other words, the gang attacked these 4 people because of 1) the racial group they were in, or 2) the racial group that this gang thought these people were in.

In other words, since these 4 people were attacked, I suppose, because of their racial group, then the gang attacked these 4 people, because this gang’s racist views of these people.

So, because of the possibility that this gang attacked these 4 people, because the gang [possibly] thought that “all Black people + all African-American people in our neighborhood, are ALL in a Haitian, criminal gang”, then the drug gang’s [possible] racist views about Black people, could have been a factor in these criminal killings, and criminal kidnappings, of these 4 people.

In other words- the possible, racist views of the drug gang, of these four Black people and/or these four African-American people, might be a factor in these criminal attacks.

I think that this possibility should be discussed- by average people, and also by reporters.

  7. TR, this may be correct. A complicating factor, which may be unrelated, is that the four Americans who were attacked, and two killed, had each of them lengthy criminal records. No idea if this was known to the cartel attackers.

  8. Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger testified this morning to the House committee on the political weaponization of government. From Taibbi’s opening statement:

The First Amendment, and an American population accustomed to the right to speak, is the best defense left against the Censorship-Industrial Complex. If the latter can knock over our first and most important constitutional guarantee, these groups will have no serious opponent left anywhere.

If there’s anything the Twitter Files show, it’s that we’re in danger of losing this most precious right, without which all other democratic rights are impossible.

  9. TR and Kate, just read that the 5 cartel members that did the kidnapping were dumped, alive, and tied up with a note from the cartel saying the kidnapping was a mistake.

  10. RE: four kidnapped.

I want our govt to send assassins into Mexico and slaughter that entire gang.
I don’t care if all four of the Americans had criminal records a mile long.

    Somebody has to pay th

  11. Those clothes are a nice contrast to the pictures of kids working in coal mines and factories.

  12. Since the post topic is snappy dressing I’d like to comment on two people in the public eye whom I believe are quite adroit at the sartorial arts. And both have been features of neo’s past posts.

The first is White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. I have seen her on television and in articles many times and never once has she not been very tastefully and stylishly dressed. Her entire appearance; clothes, hair, make-up, even her posture. She is always very poised and “put together.”

    B) Jordan Peterson. He not only takes pains to be appropriately dressed, he takes pains to purchase and wear very well made clothes that fit his coloration and body style well. (KJP does the same. Maybe it’s something about having “J” and “P” in one’s initials). Also, he dresses creatively. He chooses fabrics and patterns that are not typical, mundane, middle-aged men’s fashion. Yet he manages to be creative without dressing too young for his age.

  13. PA Cat,

When I clicked your first link the photo of the Duke instantly reminded me of another Brit, who also has good taste in clothes and takes pains to appear appropriate and stylish in public: Nigel Farage.

  14. RTF–

I don’t expect Mr. Markle ever to make your list of well-dressed Brits.

  15. RTF–

Yet another candidate for well-dressed male Brits: Larry, Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, who lives at 10 Downing Street (politicians stay there only temporarily) and has outlasted four PMs in the 12 years he’s held office:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/history/10-downing-street#larry-chief-mouser

Note the tasteful contrast between the pure white belly and legs and the brown tabby markings on the back, tail, and head– the whole set off by a collar of office bearing the bright colors of the Union Jack. The Duke of Windsor was not a cat guy (he and the Duchess kept pugs), but I think he would approve of Larry’s style.

  16. Rufus T. Firefly–The absence of many closets could also be a consequence of old tax laws, with some places creatively taxing based on the number of closets in a house, or the presence of interior stairs.

  17. Rufus T. Firefly:

Indeed, especially when younger (and because I knew him over time, I met him when he was relatively young). He still had some overcoats from his NYC go-go years that were quite something. They lasted all the way to the Paradise fire and then pffft!

  18. One more menswear item for RTF– because– In the spring, a human’s fancy/Lightly turns to bat and glove: Here is MLB’s 2023 list of the weirdest baseball uniforms ever worn (includes some minor league unis to remember as well as the infamous Chicago White Sox shorts uniform, the Phillies’ Big Grape 1979 look, the then-Brooklyn Dodgers’ bright blue satin (!!) jerseys from the 1950s, and the 1971 Orioles’ blazing orange unis that were said to make Earl Weaver look like an angry carrot)–

Recommended for anyone needing a laugh break from politics.

  19. Hi SHIREHOME,

I really hope that these are the 5 guys who did the murders and kidnappings of these Americans.

But- I wonder how easy it would be, for a gang… [that I suppose], does: lying, stealing and murderer-ing for a living- to find 5, sacrificial goats, to take the pressure off of the gang.

Could the gang members, [literally] hold guns to the heads of five men, and say to them: “Turn yourself in for the murders of those people. Are you afraid of the Government giving you a firing squad? Confess to those crimes, or will kill in ways that are WORSE!”

I have a feeling that the criminal gang mentioned, might not be a trustworthy group of people.

It’s just my view, but I just don’t trust the words of a murderous, criminal gang.

  20. Art Deco–

About Frau Fetterperson– maybe she visited Canada to cuddle up with Trudeau– whose mother was quite the girl-about-town in her younger days. As for the trip to the Pittsburgh fire station– well, firefighters are reputed to be good-looking hunks, and maybe Gisele is on fire for a new guy . . .

  21. PA Cat,

The White Sox are my team, and owner Bill Veeck (as in wreck) had other wacky uniforms. I own several of their retro jerseys, including the 1919 “black sox” version.

As a kid I was a big fan of the pin-striped Pirates hat and longed to have one, but it was not in my budget.

  22. That cat has Margaret Thatcher’s eyes.

(One would have suspected that she’d find a way, somehow, to return to the scene of her greatest triumphs….)
