  1. Love these bite-sized chunks of dance appreciation!

I had heard the name Jerome Robbins, but knew nothing about him. I’m a bit surprised that a piece showing three white military guys is performed in the past ten years and with reverence.

I also appreciated the craft involved in making the three characters distinct within thirty seconds. Though I wouldn’t have gotten it without an explanation since my dance vocabulary is so limited.

Lately I’ve been reading a lot of movie reviews at RogerEbert.com. I notice how long it takes for the reviewer to get to the business of what kind of movie it is and how well it is done. Instead I find myself wading through paragraphs of trivia and woolgathering.

  2. Here’s a video of the second sailor’s solo, danced in 1981 by none other than Baryshnikov himself– he was 33 at the time. The look on his face at the end (when he’s on the floor looking up at one of the girls) is an interesting combination of innocence and knowing.

Many of the steps look complex and difficult (to me at any rate), but he makes them look effortless:

  3. In the mid 1970’s my wife and I bought a nice sailboat, and upgrade from out 16ft Daysailer and it was a 22 foot Catalina sail boat which we named ‘Fancy Free’ in large script. My wife had a been a ballet major in college at the University of Oklahoma and she was very familiar with the ballet Fancy Free. Some folks seeing the name on the boat would make the connection and others just thought it was a nifty name. Nice memories of weekend racing with that sail boat for about eight years.

  4. I am Chuffed! I went into town today to get gas because they (whom ever they are) say gas is going back up. I have enough points at King Soopers (Kroger) to get a dollar off so off I went. I passed the gas station it showed Regular gas at $2.51, very good. I went on down a couple of blocks to get coffee at McD’s. I get a large Black Coffee for a Buck. Ah, thing again! It now costs $1.50, a fifty percent increase! I settled for a small Senior Coffee at .85 cents. Now back to the gas station. I pull in to fill my tank and gas is now $2.61 a gal. Up a dime in 20 minutes!

At least my VA bennies went up $13 a month.

  5. Looked through the last few days of Ramirez cartoons. I’m shocked and amazed. Given all the recent news of the fascism that we face from Democrats, this fool still thinks the problem is Trump. He must be brain damaged.

I suspect there may be a lot of people on the right who are deathly afraid of admitting to themselves the full extent of the wreckage that Democrats have inflicted and the scope and difficulty of the task to save America. So they fool themselves into believing that the problems are all Trump’s fault. If we just nominate people who aren’t infected by Trump, everything will be fixed. We will win elections and the corrupt FBI and all the rest of the bad news will be magically ‘all better’.

    Sad. Sick. Scary.

  6. om @ 10:28,

I loved that Coen Brothers, “No Dames” number. Hilarious and brilliantly done! The movie it’s in, “Hail Caesar,” is very clever and entertaining.

  7. Interrupting this entertaining dance routine to bring you Part oh-I-dunno of that raw, seething and emotionally complex drama, “Just some damn fool thing in the Balkans”….

(To really understand what’s going on there, one could do worse than watch “Black Cat, White Cat”…with the volume turned up.)

  8. We can hope the Trump bows out gracefully when he loses a few primaries but probably not. Too bad for conservatives. Ron DeSantis is doing an outstanding job.

DeSantis offers to help Libs of TikTok creator when she was doxxed

“But during that period when she (Libs of TikTok) was doxxed and forced from her home, someone from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office reached out, relaying a message from the Florida Republican who offered her refuge at the mansion; Libs of TikTok revealed this on Fox Nation’s Tucker Carlson Today.”

  9. I just saw TV coverage of all the Southwest Airlines luggage that is piling up at airports.

First thought: Dear Lord, don’t let undersecretary for nuclear waste Sam Brinton see that video! Temptation would be much too high!

  10. Today National Review is clapping itself on the back and celebrating the 65th anniversary of Whittaker Chamber’s scorching review of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” in NR’s pages.

I’m well aware “Atlas Shrugged” is a badly flawed novel. It’s an interminably long, didactic melodrama between Good and Evil (according to Rand’s philosophy) with paper-thin characters.

    And yet…

It has sold millions of copies and changed lives with a message of self-reliance and opposition to collectivism. The Evil in “Atlas” seemed cartoonish in the 20th century, but has largely come to pass since Obama’s election in 2008. Adam Schiff and Joe Biden are creatures practically straight out of “Atlas Shrugged.”

Rand changed my life a bit and I retain affection for her, though I wouldn’t want to have been an Objectivist or a member of her inner circle

Chambers loses me completely with this famous, horrific line from his review:

From almost any page of Atlas Shrugged, a voice can be heard, from painful necessity, commanding: “To a gas chamber–go!”
