  1. And to think that there are still folks out there ( a few? many? a lot?) that are convinced the moon landings never happened and it was all filmed in a Hollywood studio.
Goes to show that when someone’s mind is made up, all evidence they find / see confirms their opinion.
What’s really scary about this is people like this vote.

Speaking of those Twitter folks who lost their jobs; maybe they should learn how to weld.
Usually I am very sympathetic to those who lose their jobs, but I will surmise the Twitter employees were all cheering when the Keystone pipeline was cancelled and thousands of folks lost their jobs and when Joe Biden said he aimed to put the oil and gas industry out of business.
Atop all this, these Twitter folks had no problem removing any comments from Twitter that they did not agree with.
    What incredible arrogance.
Nope, I don’t feel sorry for them at all.

  2. So yesterday good old Joe, right before an election in which his side looks like it’s going to get creamed, said he’s going to shut down all the remaining coal power plants and replace them with wind and solar. Does he WANT to lost Pennsylvania?

  3. “Remember, remember the Fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot; I know of no reason Why the Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot.”

    Happy Guy Fawkes Day, everyone.

For those interested in whether Guy Fawkes’ stash of gunpowder would have been sufficient to blow up James I and the House of Lords (as it was in 1605; not the present-day Victorian-era Houses of Parliament)– or those who just like to see things go BOOM!– here’s a documentary about a present-day reconstruction of the building in which King and Parliament would have met in 1605 and its total obliteration by the amount of powder that Fawkes is known to have stored in the undercroft beneath the House of Lords. Yes, it’s a long documentary, but an interesting scientific glimpse into the history of seventeenth-century England.

  4. “Biden” in CAT-5 Panic Mode….
…so it’s only fitting to roll out the old tried-and-true…

    China, Russia AND Iran…
    Well how ’bout that!!
(Maybe said “Cybersecurity Chief” can explain to us why “Biden”‘s in bed with all three of ’em??…)

  5. Does the Paul Pelosi incident still matter?
    Maybe…
    From slightly diffeently angles:

  6. To this day, I do not under stand the people who claim that the moon landing was a hoax. As I heard someone point out recently, if the U. S. moon landing was a hoax, then the Soviet Union was collaborating with the hoax, otherwise they would have called foul.
And then the flat Earth crowd seems to not consider that on the flat plate model some of them use, with Antartica on the outside of the plate and the North Pole in the center, every ocean going sea captain and every trans continental air crew would have to be in on the plot. The distances between continents on such a model is far different than the distances on a sphere, except for maybe one single east west route. All others would be more or less than a sphere.

  7. No discernable benefit from mRNA injections since December 2021 (Omicron).
(But get an injection of something that causes myocarditis anyway. Because–reasons.)

    https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.06.28.22276926v4

CONCLUSIONS There is no discernable optimal vaccine effectiveness among ?18 years of age and vaccinated third dose population since the beginning (December 20, 2021) of the Omicron variant surge. Other data including pre-existing conditions, ethnicity, deprivation score, and vaccination rate disparities need to be adjusted by developing validated models for evaluating VE against hospitalizations and deaths. Both the vaccinated and unvaccinated populations showed favorable outcomes with a significant decline in case fatality rate and risk of hospitalizations during the Omicron variant surge. The suboptimal vaccine effectiveness with an increased proportion of cases among the vaccinated population was associated with a significantly increased proportion of hospitalizations and deaths during the Omicron variant surge. This underscores the need to prevent infections, especially in the elderly vaccinated population irrespective of vaccination status by employing uniform screening protocols and protective measures.

So, do things that work to prevent infections–
Gargle. Vit D. Nasal lavage. Zinc and a zinc ionophore (quercetin, HCQ, IVM)

  8. Writing to you from sunny, humid West Palm Beach, where I am attending my 8th “Unleash the Power Within” Tony Robbins event with my niece, D. It’s been 16 years since my last Tony event. I came to reconnect with the Tony world, see where I stand today and make some course adjustments on where I am heading in this season of my life, but most of all to show my niece a different world of people and possibilities that she can try on and perhaps take in for her life.

D., 22, comes from a “white trash middle-class family ” (her words). Her parents and siblings were destroyed by alcohol, drugs, and gambling, surviving for years on public assistance. She’s white, conservative and attended a predominantly black high school across the river from Boston.

Not surprisingly, she’s quite armored and angry. In spite of all this she takes care of her father and mother and she has become a digital artist selling her art on Etsy. She is open and looking for ways to grow. She is intelligent and brave. I’ve only seen her for a handful of Christmases. During the past few years we’ve developed an email relationship. I love her and my heart goes out to her.

She’s doing great with UPW. I’ll grant the Tony world is a strange world of people dancing, clapping, smiling, jumping, high-fiving, hugging and making noise at frequent intervals. A convention-center-sized island of love, fun and freedom. Furthermore, the days are 14-15 hours long. I myself was not prepared for my first UPW experience. I was frightened and horrified most of the first day.

The point is to rewire one’s body and mind for high-energy positive states, which are used as the foundation for making psychological changes. As goofy as it sounds, it works. D. got into it and handled her first firewalk like a trooper.

    D. came to UPW because I invited her and paid her way. She’s not as desperate as I was the first time, so it’s not quite the revelation it was for me. But she got good stuff, it’s already shifted the way she sees the world, and I can tell we’ve become lifelong friends.

  9. On a clear day with a sharply defined horizon, you can see the Earth’s curvature from 45,000 feet. From 100,000 feet you can see even more of the curvature. To see the visible side of the globe you have to be 115,000 miles out in space. The Moon is 238,855 miles from Earth. Impressive distances.

When I first saw the Moon-rise photos, it gave me a deep spiritual feeling that lingers even today. Such a beautiful planet. Sucha wonderful home for us. All the resources for humans to prosper. How can we not be impressed?

  10. I always thought the “Don’t-worry-be-happy” gang were a bit too cute….but I did wonder if maybe, just maybe they were right. Might as well TRY to be happy, or at least PRETEND to be happy…you know “Fake it till you make it”….
(I mean, what, as they say, is the alternative?)

But YIKES, it certainly looks like the pessimists at Zerohedge are working overtime, giving everyone a run for their money, as it were.
(OTOH, what if they’re not so much “pessimists” as “realists”…?)

And so…”Don’t worry be freakin’ terrified”?

Or maybe one should, harkening back to that 1969 NL pennant race, recite the Metropolitans’ mantra, “Ya’ gotta believe”…with “passionate intensity” over and over and over again…AND work to make it so…

  11. Re: UPW

I was curious to see how Tony and UPW have changed since 2006.

UPW has gotten huge — about 10,000 participants vs the 2,000-3,000 I recall. Tony has kept the prices the same — $500-$1500 depending on the seating. (D. and I were in the cheap seats.) UPW is an intro program and the later programs have gone up ~40%. Not bad.

UPW has pretty much the same format. Tony has updated the music and added refinements to the content. He’s using different stories to illustrate his points.

Tony has been buffeted by recent cultural changes. He apologized for suggesting #MeToo was a victim position and not entirely healthy. He made an appeal against racism based on George Floyd’s death. He had to bow to Covid regulations, put his big public events on hold and move to virtual for those years.

Happily, at UPW I saw only two masks and there was no social distancing. However, the usual hugs have been replaced, mostly, by high-fives. Still, occasionally, we were told to hug five other participants.

Tony, then and now, mostly avoids politics. However, to the extent he addressed issues, it was against the current tide. He conceded Trump was too often driven by ego and significance, but defended Trump as a good man with a good family and good intentions. (Tony knows Trump personally. It seems Tony knows just about everybody.)

Tony believes social media could connect us, but has been a disaster because it allows some to attack others safely behind a keyboard without consequences. He took a direct shot at woke:
