  1. I’m learning baking, because I think it’s good to see myself go from awful to not good to OK to good to very good, and it’s easier for me to do this in an area where I don’t expect that I’ll be skillful. And, because I like baked goods. I pick something and make it three or five or more times, until I get it good.

This week it’s bride’s biscuits, and I think I’m approaching OK, on my third try. Use Crisco; accept no substitute.

  2. Once a year, at the appropriate calendar festival, my wife heads to the Chinese bakery to buy Lao Puah bing (wife cookies).

    I don’t think I’ve ever had Bride’s Biscuits though.

  3. Knights were known as the “guild of horse butchers”. Not only the opponents’ horses, but by putting their own horses into danger for which they were rarely armored. You can’t armor against hamstringing.
You needed a pretty good stable behind you to be a knight who fought regularly.

  4. We watched a training session for the Lipizzan horses at their off season place in Florida. One of their most amazing maneuvers, a long aerial jump, was explained as allowing their rider to get past a line of foot soldiers. Very interesting and beautiful.

  5. Another off-topic, open-thread comment.

I don’t do Twitter or Facebook. I don’t read “The Washington Post” or “The New York Times.” I don’t watch TV or listen to NPR. To read what the Democrats are saying to each other, I turn to “Real Clear Politics.” Sometimes I think that the leftist headlines are in a race to see which one can depress me the most. The current front-runner is a glowing profile of Gavin Newsome (https://tinyurl.com/ye25vzf9), entitled “Gavin Newsom Will Be President. The Only Question Is When.”

    Here’s a sample paragraph:

“The first time I encountered Gavin Newsom was at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. I was in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel where the DNC finance committee was staying. The scene vibrated with power and wealth as well-known figures and party legends floated through the room. Then Newsom walked in. It was as if the 12 apostles raced to surround Jesus. His admirers encircled him three deep. He owned the room before he was 20 feet into it. I understood what I was seeing. There is an undefinable ‘it’ with a very few politicians and Newsome has it.”

By the way, amidst the adulation, the author sneaks in a snippet of practical politics. While Newsome has denied that he has any plans to replace Biden as the Party’s candidate for President, he’s been too quiet about replacing Kamala Harris as candidate for Vice President. If Biden/Newsome were to win, then how much longer would Biden last, before poor health forced him to resign? Then it’s welcome to hotel Californication.

  6. Do Dem constituencies need to fear Repub vengeance? For example, late term pregnant women who want to abort.
They seem to think so. At least, a whole podcast to talk about it.

The Supreme Court’s recent abortion decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will no doubt have many ramifications. One of the more unusual questions is the impact that Dobbs might have on data privacy. It has long been the case, for example, that cell phone location data can be used to identify certain personal behavior patterns, such as routine attendance at church. Some are now concerned that location data may be used to identify pregnant women by the locations they visit – potentially exposing them to civil or criminal charges as the underlying substantive abortion law changes. Other women are deleting period tracking apps from their phones for much the same reason. In this podcast, experts explore and debate these issues.

  7. Tucker noticed that the race in dutchess county was largely won by the gope candidate focused on lower order issue as maslow might say

  8. I remember watching a Disney movie about the Lipizzaner horses — back when the studio was worth someing. Beautiful to watch them in action.

The host of Neo’s post mentions that most movies get the horse rider’s sword action wrong, so I picked this one off my sidebar to check things out.

The host is a many-times champion jouster and trainer.
“Full contact jousting is one of the stupidest things a man can do.”

Which is why men do it. 😉

  9. The 1937 version of the light brigade suggested the charge was revenge against nanda sahib who had led the mutiny why he would try to find sanctuary 1000 miles is not explain

  10. I remember in Excalibur, Sir Lancelot and his horse were clearly were a team and used spacing to keep the unhorsed King Arthur at a serious disadvantage. The way Lancelot casually knocks Arthur down makes it plain the advantage he held.

Great horsemanship in that seen, BTW. Go check it out.
