More evidence for Omicron’s mildness
But of course, the way it’s announced is designed to strike fear into people’s hearts:
Two new scientific studies indicate that the Omicron COVID-19 variant appears to be milder than prior strains like Delta, but it still has the potential to kill and overwhelm hospitals worldwide.
Potential – even though it’s done nothing of the sort in countries such as South Africa that have been dealing with it for longer than most.
The University of Edinburgh study, which examined nearly 24,000 patients infected with the Omicron variant in November and December, says those who’d received a vaccine saw milder symptoms and were “substantially less likely” to need hospitalization compared to Delta.
Substantially less likely. That’s very good news, is it not?
The Imperial College London study said its study found that those infected with Omicron are roughly 20% less likely to need hospitalization compared to Delta — and as much as 45% less likely to stay in hospital for more than one night.
The analysis also said people who have previously been infected with COVID-19 were even less likely to end up in the hospital — as much as 60% less likely.
When I looked at a more detailed article about one of the studies, it was hard to make out what it actually means. The whole thing seems to be an estimate of some sort. It doesn’t really have a breakdown between vaccinated and unvaccinated, much less vaccinated plus boosters. Nor does it deal with serious illness and death rates. It’s really relatively worthless-seeming.

An Israeli hospital on Tuesday confirmed the first known death in the country believed to be caused by Omicron, the latest variant of SARS-CoV-2, which has brought back 2020-like restrictions across the world. With Isreal, now there are three countries that have recorded fatalities from Omicron, the variant which is spreading faster than Delta, but causing apparently milder illness.
The Israeli hospital, where the death was reported, said the patient was a male in his sixties with a number of serious pre-existing conditions. “His morbidity stemmed mainly from pre-existing sicknesses and not from respiratory infection arising from the coronavirus,” the hospital said.…
Almost all Omicron cases across the world have zero to mild symptoms. The virus is also not affecting the lungs, as scientists believe that the variant is multiplying in the throat making scratchy throat a symptom of the variant. For weeks, there was no death attributed to Omicron. The deaths reported from these three countries — though details of all cases are not known — indicate people above the age of 50 with comorbidities are at a greater risk.

Meanwhile, Biden keeps lying about nearly everything connected with COVID. Or maybe he just forgets. Or maybe some of both.
The epidemiologists at Imperial College set off the initial Covid panic by predicting two million deaths in the US in the first few months. You should recalibrate anything that comes out of there accordingly.
Here is the thing about British government communications about Covid19: they are being guided by Susan Michie, a behavioral psychologist who is in 2021 an honest to God member of the Communist Party of Britain. She believes that you motivate behavior through fear. If it seems like the Brits have gone mental over this, it is because their messages have heen concocted by a Communist. You can look it up.
I suspect that the current high number of tests/positive cases relate to travel requirements as well as family safety issues. But, once the holidays are over and people realize that Omicron is like having a cold, many will not go to be tested.
And with at-home testing, if it shows you are positive, do you have to report it to the state? And, how many will actually test themselves and will their behavior change?? At this point in time, I’ll spend the money to test my Vit D and Zn levels.

Omicron is dangerous, “even though it’s done nothing of the sort in countries such as South Africa….” Not in Denmark, which has one of the best genetic tracking systems in the world. Nor the UK.
Now, having seen how nasty this oxygen starving viral menace can be (eg, forensic autopsies) via the vascular system, one oughta respect it’s fearsome destructive powers.
But Dr John Campbell (via YT) did a program a few days ago (Monday or Tuesday?) on the recent paper examining Omicron from the University of Hong Kong (submitted but in preprint). It found that it can be 70 times more active in bronchial (or tubal) passages than older Covid-19, but one-tenth as active in aviolae (or the lung’s sacks, the actual location for blood-oxygen exchange).
Therefore, this differential mechanism explains why Omicron is so much less virulent than prior Covid-19, while nonetheless more extremely transmissible: it results in bronchitis at worst, instead of pneumonia, which is deadlier.
But such clarity is lost upon our Deep State loving scribes, apparently.

I’ve been thinking the same, Lee. Omicron will move through those who have not yet experienced covid, giving natural immunity, and we can move on from this madness (whether the government likes it or not).

pro-tip: look for a qualification a/o description of the hospitalized population in any study adducing that as evidence of outcomes and harms.
Because it’s apparent that Omicron’s ‘victims’ are disproportionately represented by those with ‘incidental’ diagnoses, relative to prior strains – i.e. people who had been hospitalized for other reasons, specifically NOT respiratory problems. That was a major factor in the original SA reporting – which SA’s authorities were clear to acknowledge – and has continued to be one as O has moved westward. But it’s not been as clearly acknowledged or accounted for lately, though it’s likely to be the factor that enables such dramatic characterizations of the strain’s impact.
Omicron presents much more like a head cold than prior variants, and is much less likely to provoke a critical immune response.

I think Liz [@5:43pm] has it figured out. I’ve wondered about this since the Thanksgiving travel crush began and huge numbers of people got tested so they could travel via air. How many of these people would have been tested if not for the travel requirement? Now its the Xmas-New Year crush, and — expectedly — the number of “cases” is on the rise.
None of the reports I’ve seen have provided a base upon which the percentage numbers are based. One report I saw Thursday [12/24] morning on the news said cases were up 45% and deaths up 1%. Was that 45% based on the number 7 days prior or up based on number of people tested, aka per capita? We do not know, or at least not told, what percent of the people tested in a given time period are found to be positive, and of those what percent require hospital treatment or even “go home and take your vitamins” advice. I would consider such information essential if I wanted to judge the actual hazard faced.

This story is confusing to me. But this is what I got from it: people again motivated to deny or mislead the public how almost harmless this ‘threat’ is — am I mistaken? But is this motivated “reasoning’ from leaders? Or media? Or both? And disentangling…well?

Editor of The Spectator in the UK recently had a lengthy exchange via Twitter with a member of the SAGE committee, medical experts informing the UK government on Covid 19.
They presented a scarry projection of 6,000 daily deaths from Omicron.
It emerges that this is deliberate on the medical scientists part — exaggerate the threat to build power by Big Government.
In other words, ignore real world data and real empirical tests that actually ought to inform best decision-making.
It seems the crazy success of Big Government regarding the enhanced greenhouse effect (aka, Climate Change), is a lesson to emulate. Exaggerate threats, then reap the State funding lucre.
But how does The Big Lie benefit those in power, given the lose of trust inevitable failure ensures?
The First Order gain is power over people.
The Second Order gain is another Big Lie: claim State Vaccine were the cause of success! See? Democrats will say come November 2022: Big Government is a success — vote for us!

Can’t fault your analysis. I don’t think those with power see any need to be trusted or liked by the populace at this point. Power is all. Oligarchs, the Administrative State, Media, Academia are its sources. Politicians and the ceremonial apparatus of Constitutions, Laws, Pageantry have become largely irrelevant (*) at this late stage, but still make for useful lightning rods for public discontent.
I’m not expecting Covid common sense and reason to break out all over just yet.
* Things can always change unexpectedly. Kings have been known to convene Parliaments and Estates Generals to tick some boxes and dot some i’s and yet ended up in other boxes themselves.
