  1. Yes, September seems to be the quickest month of the year, it is a transitional month. You would think that February would be the quickest month since it is the shortest.

  2. huxley–

I probably should have added that Sinatra was singing the old (1938) Kurt Weill song (the lyrics are by Maxwell Anderson).

One reason I’ve always associated “September Song” with the late 1930s-WWII era is that the first time I ever heard it was in the final segment of an hour-long early ’60s TV documentary about the 1930s. That closing segment covered the World’s Fair of 1939, which opened at the end of April. After showing the fair’s iconic trylon and perisphere, the narration stopped and “September Song” began to play. The script writers assumed that most viewers in the early ’60s would “get” the reference to September 1, 1939– only four months after a fair whose theme was “Dawn of a New Day” opened in New York.

I know that “Try to Remember” is also from the 1960s– it strikes a note of nostalgia for me too. Weill’s tune is much darker and brooding.

  3. And yet, here we are. I can’t believe we are only 18 months into 15 days to flatten the curve. Time flies! 🙂

Autumn is my favorite season. Headed out for a trip to Yellowstone a bit later in the month. Weather forecast is for seasonable weather but that is much cooler than what we get this time of year in coastal Maine. Bicycle riding, beach walks, and golf are my favorite things to do now through, well, whenever it gets too cold to do them comfortably.

  4. I have trees already starting to turn. Yet we still have temp’s in the 90’s. Not usual for CO front range. But then I have also seen several inches of snow on the ground this time of the year. I don’t mean in the Mountains, but the front range where Denver is.

  5. The song “Try To Remember” was actually written in the 1950s for the musical “The Fantasticks.” The musical opened off-Broadway in 1960 but premiered earlier than that, at Barnard of all places. It was based on a Rostand play from the late 1800s. See this. I first heard the song when I saw that play as a child, not all that long after it opened (maybe in 1960 or 1961). It was in a tiny theater in Greenwich Village and it was one of the best theater experiences of my life at the time (and I’d had a lot of them as a child) or even now. It was absolutely magical and innovative, and the song – which opened the show – was wonderful and memorable. It was popularized later in cover versions. The original version was sung by Jerry Ohrbach.

  6. Speaking of Kurt Weil, there’s another German song (also made famous by Ol’ Blue Eyes in an English translation) that I always thinks captures the mood of the fleeting nature of September, “Summer Wind.”

  7. And this French, jazz standard is also a brilliant combination of melody and lyrics correlating the end of a romance with the coming winter; “Les Feuilles mortes.” It was translated into English as, “Autumn Leaves.”

Vocalists really love it, but so do jazz instrumentalists. It has to be one of the most covered songs of all time. If not his favorite song, I know it was one of Miles Davis’ favorites. He complained that as he became more famous for innovation, be-bop and modern jazz he could no longer play it at concerts, because his fans wanted the new stuff. He recorded it several times* and it’s well worth a brief search to hear him play it.

Here’s a great video of Yves Montand singing it in the original French in the film, “Parigi è sempre Parigi”

Here’s Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Art Blakey Hank and Sam Jones doing one of the more famous instrumental versions: https://youtu.be/tguu4m38U78

And here’s one of my favorite vocal performances, Karin Allison. She actually sings French beautifully and flawlessly, but does the English language version here: https://youtu.be/hcNE85-aD6s

*Miles Davis also loved the Disney song, “Someday my Prince will Come” and Cindy Lauper’s, “Time after Time.” Worth seeking out.

  8. I meant to come here earlier, to wish all Jewish commenters an easy fast. Too late for the ones in the East, alas.

  9. But tomorrow starts Septober, the best month of the year! The last two weeks of September, and the first half of October! The finest weather of the year!

  10. Australia US UK in deal to get Australia some nuclear-powered subs which actually work and don’t leak — unlike their current conventionally-powered rusting leaky undersea pork barrels.

File this in the Absolutely Guaranteed to Work File:

Hopefully the Senator for General Dynamics Electric Boat Division will answer the Australian call when the Panda makes its inscrutable move.

Still, looks to be far, far better than the ridiculous French submarine deal Australia just abrogated — put together totally disinterestedly by a certain ex Australian Prime Minister for Goldman Sachs (no, seriously).

A small sign that the Hard Men of GloboHomo are bestirring themselves to go forth and fight the Other Over There — would make a nice change from oppressing their own Legacy Peoples back home. Let’s hope they can’t manage to both Walk and Chew Gum. Might give Men of the West some breathing space.

  11. In other news just been a coup in Guinea.

    Who cares?

Well that’s one of the places Chinky is planning to get his iron ore from. There are huuuuuge reserves of the stuff in Guinea — it’s just a small matter of building out first world stuff like deep water ports and railways to get it to them. Supposedly another decade before it all comes online and China can forget about Western Australian Iron Ore (which basically props up the Australian economy and pays for all the lesbians to get IVF treatments, etc. — not to mention a high price for AU Iron Ore will enable more budget blow out on the nuclear boomers — which won’t hurt the Senator(s)for Electric Boat.)

Early days. I don’t know Who / Whom or Why or How and can’t be bothered to try to find out. But it’s kind of thing worth filing at back of head and revisiting in 6 months to see who is in charge and whether or not work is proceeding apace on the iron ore project.

  12. Septober sounds nice, but in FL we have to wait for November for a real break.

Let’s see how this half month thing plays out:
    Janruary
    Febch
    Maril
    Apray
    Mane
    July = opps; maybe Juny
    Jugust
    Augstember
    Septober
    Octember
    Nocember
    Decuary

  13. Also Richard Fernandez… Good Old Richard.. He didn’t get picked out of Marcos Years Manila Underground Obscurity to attend the Kennedy School of Government on some random whim. Man’s got Gonnections. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  14. PS It is one of the wonders of the internet that an old French film was uploaded on a Russian Youtube channel to be appreciated by an American audience.
