The great Wuhan lab leak story coverup — 45 Comments

  1. “why now”

Because some credible sources with no ties to Donald Trump are suggesting it is a strong possibility. The work has been done, Trump was defeated (or cheated). They have no shame so they will pat themselves on the back and say, “See, we’re willing to admit we were wrong, that proves what unbiased objective ‘journalists’ we are”.

Sad to say, I don’t think it’s because there is a smoking gun reveal forthcoming. The CCP has had a year now to destroy the evidence and disappear any potential whistleblowers so they will be able to spin it as “speculation” no matter how badly it smells.

  2. I said on another thread a few days ago but this entire roll out is so reminiscent of the election ‘fortification’ story that appeared seemingly out of nowhere a couple months back. That was Newsweek I think so both these big long stories are in ‘legacy’ media outlets or whatever you want to call them and not some idiot site like Axios or Vox.

Seems to me that they can’t keep these things hidden forever but they can try to hold out until an opportune time to spool them out.

  3. Short version:
It was the moral imperative of our age to lie about and cover up COVID19—thus causing the death, despair and depression of millions around the globe, while destroying individuals, families, societies and, especially, the middle class in many countries—because…well…because we had to follow up on our lying, repeatedly—but for the best, the most ethical reasons—that Orange Man Bad(TM) was/is a Bad, Bad, RACIST(TM).

Understand, we did not take this decision lightly: we simply HAD TO DO IT.
Because it was the moral imperative of our time.
Because ORANGE MAN BAD, BAD, BAD.
    BAD. VERY BAD.
    Q.E.D.
(In fact, we must STILL lie about him and his sordid, deplorable, reprobate, insurrectionist supporters. It IS the moral imperative of our time….and if we repeat this often enough, then it MUST be true. Yes, it IS the mor…)

  4. Barry,

Yep, sorry I was too rushed to check that’s why I said ‘I think’.

  5. I’ve also heard a rumor that the always truthful news media wanted to get out ahead of the Fauci emails.

  6. “[U]nder the cloud of Donald Trump’s toxic racism, which contributed to an alarming wave of anti-Asian violence in the U.S.”

Amazing how Trump managed to get woke leftists and urban gang blacks to attack Asians and woke college administrations to bar Asians from admittance. You’d think with those kind of Svengali-like powers he’d have been President-for-life by now.

  7. Trump has called for China to pay $10 trillion in reparations. Isn’t that about how much they hold of the national debt? That would make reparations easy to collect.

  8. “The lengths to which the Democrats, the left, the media, and “scientists” (I put it in quotes now because it’s clear that they value leftist politics above scientific truth and the safety of their fellow human beings) will go to defeat the right is extraordinary and dangerous. We already knew that, but the extent of it is tremendous and pervasive.” neo

Does anyone imagine that the parties responsible for this mass murder of 3.5 MILLION human beings have or are losing any sleep over it? The hydrocholoquine protocol and Ivermectin treatment could have saved millions. The lockdowns destroyed lives and have exacted a terrible price among the young school aged.

What more must the democrats, RINO collaborators and bureaucracy in government, the media, and monstrous medical ‘establishment’ do before people recognize that they are having a carefully planned war waged upon them?

  9. It’s too late to affect the 2020 election and too early to affect 2022.

  10. From Sundance, https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2021/06/02/fauci-emails-show-u-s-scientists-knew-covid-looked-engineered-only-days-before-insisting-the-virus-was-natural/#more-21258

    Biowarfare?

“ That starts to bring us to the second point. Why would the Deep State release these emails, instead of just hiding them?

?This second point should be very familiar to CTH readers…. The FOIA fulfillment of these emails has a very distinct fingerprint that implies there is something much larger in the background.

You will remember the Carter Page FISA application was also released under the guise of a FOIA fulfillment. On July 21, 2018, the Mueller team (led by Andrew Weissmann) released the Page FISA application, the first release of a FISA application in history, with the motive to hide/bury the much larger issue of President Obama’s administration using the Intelligence Community to conduct surveillance on their political opponents.

Everyone jumped on the stories around the FISA release, and few people paused to ask why this “Top Secret” Title-1 Search and surveillance authorization document was released in the first place? Requesting the public release of such a top secret document would have been the easiest FOIA request to deny… but the DOJ choose to release it.

The Mueller/Weissmann motive was simple: they needed to cloud the bigger issue of surveillance of a political campaign; AND they knew James Wolfe had already leaked it to the media on March 17th of 2017.

Everyone was excited to read and discuss the content of the FISA application and exhaust thousands of column inches on the discussion as people took sides based on the DOJ/FBI justification for the FISA itself.

The Weissmann release had the intended effect… people stopped debating whether President Obama was conducting political surveillance on behalf of Hillary Clinton and their political alignment. THAT debate was a much bigger issue that just disappeared with the emergence of the FISA application.

The release of these Fauci emails has an almost identical smell, which would indicate there is a much bigger story in the background that this release is intended to dilute.

Perhaps the bigger story is the creation of the virus; perhaps the bigger story is an intentional release of a manufactured virus; or perhaps the bigger story is the manipulation of the virus -the creation of a fraudulent narrative- to achieve political goals.

The COVID-19 narrative becomes a tool to achieve a variety of objectives: • The stalling of a fantastic economy that was benefiting every American voter. • Mail-in ballots that can be used and manipulated to achieve fraudulent results. • Controls over debates to avoid a weak candidate being exposed or confronted. • The deployed ‘excuse‘ for a very visible lack of voter enthusiasm for the puppet (Biden). In short, without COVID as a tool the manufactured election process is more difficult. The ‘never let a crisis go to waste‘ strategy includes the necessary creation of a crisis.

Regardless of the BIGGER ISSUE being covered-up; and just like the release of the FISA application; there’s little doubt the administrative state saw the release of these Fauci emails as a strategy toward keeping something else hidden in the background.

    Something far more damaging….

  11. Well there is no way those emails would have been released had someone not wanted them released. Surely even the most rusted on CivNats cannot believe in current year that the FOIA machinery works without fear or favour. As for QAnon fever dreams of ‘Good Guys’ inside the system working to get information out, forget about that.

So why? Obfuscation and misdirection because they’re worried about us noticing something else? Pre-emptive Damage Control before an independent source goes public? Plain old factional in-fighting? Who knows?

    Let’s see who inherits Fauci’s job(s) shortly.

  12. In my experience, the Legacy MSM only gets interested in presenting stories in a fast-breaking way like this, when they’re trying to get in front of something worse. Saturating the news market with lots of material, quickly, has a way of satiating any interest in digging deeper to discover more.

  13. The extent of the conspiracy to hide this is astounding. I have always been one to discount conspiracy theories based on the operational difficulties in keeping a massive conspiracy secret. In this case, I was wrong and a lot of people I thought were kooks were right.

I am (dare I say it?) outraged. The government officials involved in this conspiracy have committed treason, and heads should roll… literally.

  14. @RoyNathanson:

A school of fish doesn’t have to conspire to all swim in the same direction. Aligned Interests. Not to say that there aren’t conspirators or even multiple conspiracies. But some monolithic conspiracy, no.

Although best explained to the Proles as being Monolithic. Otherwise they won’t grok.

Damn… I’m a Gnostic. Who’s going to light the pyre?

Om strikes me as being the Zippo type.

  15. Zaphod, you be Zippo the Pinhead in these parts. Can you grok that? Trippy dude.

  16. More from Sundance today, 6-3, on possible “bigger story in the background”

    https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2021/06/03/behind-the-sars-cov-2-origination-backstory-all-roads-lead-to-stop-trump/

Many of the same points as Sundance’s last post yesterday (see @Paul in Boston’s comment above). But a more specific conclusion and additional detail:

Ballot audits not withstanding, I doubt there is a bigger story that will surface this year and this one has familiar tentacles.

As the discussion surrounding the release of emails from Anthony Fauci ripples through the media, we should all consider carefully the consequential ramifications of the discussion upon our nation. At the heart of the current debate is a question about whether the SARS-CoV-2 virus originated from a bio research lab in Wuhan China. An article in Vanity Fair magazine provides some stark background to contemplate: …

There are a lot of familiar institutions and people within the article highlighting just how political everything around the COVID outbreak became. As a nation we have all lived through the consequences of these political manipulations. However, the application of Occam’s razor can serve as a guide; and I think the data is aligning in one specific direction.

Whether the virus originated in a Wuhan lab and was leaked accidentally or whether it was created by Chinese scientists and released purposefully is obviously something that will be debated for quite some time. For the sake of this particular point of discussion that particular aspect is less important. What is important, and indeed more factually likely, is that regardless of SARS-CoV-2 origination there were political elements inside the U.S. who sought to take advantage of the crisis.

As President Obama’s former chief of staff and later Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, famously said: “never let a crisis go to waste.” I think the answers to the outcome of COVID-19 in the era of President Donald Trump can be identified within that statement. Unfortunately, that means the discussion of COVID-19 is going to be exponentially politicized and that means discovering the truth will be even more challenging.

Nothing happens in a vacuum and as we have noted within these pages for years if you follow the sequence and timeline you get a better picture of what is really going on.

    Consider this sequence:

    – A once beloved Bill Gates, [more detail] …

Perhaps the bigger story is the creation of the virus; perhaps the bigger story is an intentional release of a manufactured virus; or perhaps the bigger story is the manipulation of the virus -the creation of a fraudulent narrative- to achieve political goals [emphasis in the original]. Against the backdrop of “never letting a crisis go to waste”, the latter seems much more likely.

The origination of SARS-CoV-2 (natural or lab leak) becomes a moot point. What matters is how the operatives in the U.S. sought to take advantage of the crisis the COVID outbreak provided. …

  17. @HumphreyP:

“the creation of a fraudulent narrative- to achieve political goals”

Late Stage Organisations of all sorts (from Sci-Fi Writers’ Guilds, to NYT, to Boeing, to USGov in all its myriads bits, to entire Civilizations) can do no other. They select for people who excel at manipulating perceptions and the ‘best’ of these who demonstrate mastery of political intrigue end up Running the System.

At this point in our historical cycle, it’s a Feature, not a Bug.

Implications of this are so terrifying that they send certain types off the deep end in search of a ream of Statistics and Factoids to barricade themselves behind. Would be better off building a cabin in the woods.

  18. A couple of quotes from Vanity Fair caught my eye.

No, COVID-19 was not a bioweapon used by the Chinese to infect American athletes at the Military World Games in Wuhan in October 2019.

This is an extremely narrow view of bioweapon research that is aimed at making the idea seem like a lunatic conspiracy theory. While I think that all of the excuses for gain-of-function research are weak and the dangers too high, that won’t stop Russia from doing it anyway. And what would that look like? Well, build a similar bioweapon so you can learn how to manage and defeat it.

There is also the mutually assured destruction deterrence scenario.

I once attended an unclassified colloquium given by the manager of one of the U.S. military proving grounds. They test our weapons there, but more importantly they test our enemy’s weapons and our countermeasures there.

Of course, everyone will say they have no idea what the Chinese military was funding inside the WIV. But why did the U.S. gain-of-function moratorium have a national security exception? Why would the U.S. fund any the WIV work unless U.S. was guaranteed access to the most deadly viruses?

If the U.S. was even slightly and indirectly responsible for the SARS-CoV-2 virus discovery or development, then that is the bombshell that must be avoided or suppressed.

The two big irresponsible actions IMO are that U.S. officials trusted the Chinese to handle this stuff safely (assumes an accidental leak), and secondly that the Chinese officials knowingly let the infected air travelers infected the world.
    _____

On January 15, five days before President Joe Biden’s swearing in, the State Department released a fact sheet about activity at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, disclosing key information: that several researchers there had fallen ill with COVID-19-like symptoms in autumn 2019, before the first identified outbreak case; and that researchers there had collaborated on secret projects with China’s military and “engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017.”

So Trump’s people dropped an info. bomb on the way out the door. That and some diligent scientists explains why this information is coming out. The exact timing is still curious.

  19. @TommyJay:

So let me see… You’re still worried about these Russians:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3HJ_IEwxgk

    And believe that these Americans:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIYGFSONKbk

felt forced to go do some dirty research with the Chinese because the Russians are the most dangerous and immoral people on the face of the earth today and Mistakes Were Made.

Can we just leave the @#$#ing Russians out of #$^% for a day? Pretty please? Sure they are not saints and Putin is not Santa Claus. But really… Focus, focus, focus.

    (1) US Systemic Failure Imminent Societal Collapse due to multiplicity of factors, but main one being Insane Degenerate Fart-snorting Elites.

    (2) Chinese taking all possible advantage of (1). Not *causing* (1).

    (3) A teeny tiny minute totally almost @#$@ing invisible (3): MUH RUSSIANS.

A sane United States would partner with the Russians to keep Chinese a bit off balance. Impossible because the United States is incapable of having a sane or *consistent* foreign policy and the Russians know it.

    Just a thought.

  20. @Gordon Scott
    Exactly.

Which makes it the perfect time!.
By 2022 if it is brought up they will use the old Clinton line, “That’s old news.”

  21. I mostly agree with that Zaphod. If what I’ve said is true, and it’s a guess that is increasingly backed by what passes for evidence in the media, it is a complete absurdity. We’re helping China make bioweapons for whatever purpose?!?!

Russia is to some extent a stand-in for the military boogie man. I’d speculate that the predominant motivator here is just the giant military industrial complex doing its thing and running amok. On the other hand (I can’t resist) Russia has been and continues to be the most scientifically advanced nation outside of NATO nations and maybe including most NATO nations.

Who has torpedoes that travel at 200 to 300 knots? Russia does, and possibly only Russia. Hypersonic missiles? Check.

The other point is that our extensive embrace with China began precisely as a counterweight to the Soviets. From China’s point of view, that all ended when the Clinton military dropped that JDAM into the window of the Chinese agents in Serbia(?).

But the Democrats won’t give up on the idea, at least as a political posture. I can’t say I fully understand their motives other than the fact that China can throw around a lot more slush fund bribery cash than the Russians. Wasn’t there some Obama cabinet member or subordinate that had to quote Chairman Mao from time to time?

I’m always suspicious of these claims in the media, but it looks like the U.S. is experiencing an extensive series of cyber attacks from Russia, with the blessing of the Kremlin. Or is that BS?

  22. @TommyJay:

Can you blame the Russians for looking out for their own interests (Cyber Attacks or inventing super duper torpedoes and missiles the US Military Industrial Complex apparently now can not excepting 20 years too late and a thousand grafting times over budget) when the USA has consistently acted in bad faith towards it beginning with the Great Looting of the 1990s? In 2021 given the malign nature of the US Governing Class, if you were another non client state country, wouldn’t you work overtime to keep things de-stablised?

Having said that, I would think that *some* of the Russian Scare in the media is combination of Usual Media Owning Suspects’ Atavism, plus senior career types who bet their working lives on the Russia Thing. They can’t turn on a dime and start pumping out Chinese Calligraphy. Getting deeply into China Studies is an order of magnitude harder than learning to quote Pushkin.

Plus nobody wants to call out the Chinese too much for a bunch of reasons.

For the Russians, they’ll never be bestest buddies, but some partial alignment of interests would be the sane thing to aim for. Siberia is Russia’s Wild West, Manifest Destiny, and a bunch of other things. Not our Western Cartoon Katorga / Camps Image. They’re terrified of losing it to the Chinese. Faced with a Capricious US, what else can they do but play their own corner and I would imagine work overtime to nudge the Chinese Expansionary Mindset Pacificward.

  23. CCP Operatives at the Wuhan lab intentionally released the weaponized virus. The evidence that confirms that conclusion is Moderna’s announcement that just two days after receiving the needed insight into the virus’ makeup from the Chinese, Moderna had a ready to go vaccine for FDA testing.

Once the virus was released, the CCP intentionally facilitated its spread beyond China’s borders, an act of war. The CCP’s motivation was to assist the democrat’s in preventing Trump’s reelection. Trump’s actions while President were seen by the CCP as a mortal threat. To retain plausible deniabiity they couldn’t directly target America. So as cover, the CCP attacked the world, knowing that western elements would shield them from scrutiny by insisting the virus to be a natural occurance.

Fauci used his position and contacts to fund Chinese gain-of-function research. He was not alone, he is and was part of a widespread, international conspiracy. Time Magazine revealed part of the conspiracy. The WHO & CDC’s actions demonstrate their leadership to be part of the conspiracy. The democrat’s top leadership’s actions demonstrate them to be part of the conspiracy to finalize the seizing of control of the US Government.

The mass media and social media’s collusion demonstrates their complicity in the plot. All of the above, plus the Deep State’s actions are part of the Great Reset.

It’s real and they’ve just begun.

  24. @GB:

That’s joining up a bunch of dots… noticing connections.

    You’re an Anti-Sinite!

    Shame on you, Sir!

  25. Anyone else notice how we now need “fact checkers” given that they can no longer hide the truth from us?

  26. }}} The CCP has had a year now to destroy the evidence and disappear any potential whistleblowers so they will be able to spin it as “speculation” no matter how badly it smells.

Kinda like the 2020 election results, huh?

  27. “So let’s get this straight – the coverup was because the US was implicated waist-deep in this stuff. But it was also because Orange Man Bad Evil Racist, and an enormous truth had to be suppressed because of that so it’s really his fault.” – Neo

That was my first impression as well. Maybe the author even believes it. Probably does.

On another comment thread I mentioned an interesting corollary to the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect:

    https://medium.com/@addictiondocMD/a-new-corollary-to-the-gell-mann-amnesia-effect-3578a37ed3e9
By Howard Wetsman, MD, addiction expert 2018-10-13 on coining “the Hunt Assumption Amnesia Corollary to the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect.”

So the Hunt Assumption Amnesia Corollary is when experts start reading a paper, note that they disagree with some basic assumptions of the work, but keep reading and accept the conclusions, forgetting they had rejected the assumptions. This effect is rife in Addiction Medicine, and, I suspect, much of academia.

I want to pose my own testable hypothesis about how this corollary effect occurs. I think, if I’m right, that we’ll see it in all media.

First, the assumption is stated as fact, but in a muted way so that it slides past the readers assumption filter rather than slamming headlong into it. Then data is piled up to bolster the writer’s thesis by generalizing findings in particular situations to all situations. So, by the end of the piece any disagreement with the assumption is forgotten under the weight of “the evidence.”

I think we have all seen (and sometimes commented) on that procedure, but that’s not exactly what is happening here in the Vanity Fair article, namely, presenting assumptions as settled facts, without identifying them AS assumptions, or supporting them with evidence.

The goal is to fuse those assumptions to the bulk of the article, which is factually true, so that the reader indelibly associates the two separate parts.

It’s used in almost all media stories about anything these days, the obligatory Trump reference that often doesn’t even have a relationship to the subject of the piece; even more so when there is a real connection.

  28. Hinderaker’s take on the Vanity Fair story is much the same as Neo’s.
I agree with the bolded part; it actually leaps out IF you don’t start with Eban’s assumptions.

    https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2021/06/bombshell-upon-bombshell.php

Eban’s findings are stunning. She documents what can only be called a conspiracy within the U.S. government to suppress information about the origins of the covid virus. I am still working my way through her article–it is very long–but she seems to have the goods.

One warning–Eban engages at various points in ritual denunciations of Donald Trump, without which I suppose you can’t get an article published in Vanity Fair. But these have little or nothing to do with the story she relates–in fact, the bottom line is that Trump was right, but he didn’t know the half of it–and can easily be ignored.

My point is that the denunciations about Trump are not “ignorable” when repeatedly stressed as part-and-parcel of the revelations, most of which appear to be true. They are absorbed as also being true — without any actual evidence other than being consistent with the media background noise for the last 5 years.

  29. Lost my blockquote markers …..they must be around here somewhere.
    Probably with my missing glasses….

  30. Desperately clinging to lab-leak (escape) “theory”, while STILL desperately touting intentional spreading as “conspiracy theory”.

“Theory” that has been backed up by a growing number of actual “mechanics”, rather than shiny shoed “administrators”, for over a year.

  31. “So let’s get this straight – the coverup was because the US was implicated waist-deep in this stuff.”

Change “US” to the more specific “Obama administration officials” and it makes (left) sense. Even more so if the research was for bio-warfare which would put the Obama people doing for biological what the Clinton administration did for missiles and nukes. The reason promoted on the left in the 90s for what the Clinton’s did for China was that a world with only the US as a superpower was very bad so another one had to be built to replace the fallen USSR.

  32. The reason promoted on the left in the 90s for what the Clinton’s did for China was that a world with only the US as a superpower was very bad so another one had to be built to replace the fallen USSR.

Do you have the name of someone promoting this notion ca. 1995?

  33. while STILL desperately touting intentional spreading as “conspiracy theory”.

See David Baltimore’s remarks on the virus itself. It has properties consistent with an engineered microbe. That’s evidence. The evidence that Chinese officials deliberately released it has yet to appear.

  34. “Projection, denial and narcissism” seems to be what’s infecting much of the American “elite.”

Virus origin – likely man made

Initial infection source – Wuhan Institute of Virology

Accidental or intentional – needs investigated (I’d give odds of 9 to 1 accident/intentional)

I think it was much more likely that several lab workers were accidentally infected, and the virus spread unnoticed for several weeks, well beyond the vicinity of Wuhan and China. Mismanagement and CYA by China made the situation worse. Lack of transparency on many institutions parts made it worse still.

  35. Only a complete moron would intentionally release an engineered virus from the lab that created it, and the PRC isn’t run by complete morons. On that ground alone I find the notion of an intentional release of Covid-19 highly improbable.

A plan, after an accidental release, to spread the virus to other countries as fast as possible, so the whole world would have to suffer, not just China? That I can believe – the PRC’s behavior in early 2020 is quite consistent with such a plan. It’d take a miracle to prove it at this point, though.

  36. Art+deco

I will have to take that back as I can’t find what I thought I had to back it up.

  37. Interesting point about Siberia Zaphod.

Geoffrey B., My readings suggest that the first labs outside China that got the full virus genome were in Germany and they got it early in the timeline. I believe Germany had the first PCR infection tests. The VF story says that Dr. Shi had the genome mapped at some very early date.

AesopFan, The whole TDS mindset of the VF author is rather incredible. A complete lack of self-awareness.

    Especially this section:
IV. An “Antibody Response” (What could that mean?)

Trump’s premature statement poisoned the waters for anyone seeking an honest answer to the question of where COVID-19 came from. According to Pottinger, there was an “antibody response” within the government, in which any discussion of a possible lab origin was linked to destructive nativist posturing.

Oohh. So there is a deep state and it had a unified hostile reaction to the President. Good to know.

  38. “…what else can they do but play their own corner and I would imagine work overtime to nudge the Chinese Expansionary Mindset Pacificward.”

That precedent was tried in 1939. To be sure, it worked out pretty well…until it didn’t.

One wonders if Russia is “doomed to repeat it” since their general outlook and strategic analysis owes much to the “we’re perennial victims” mindset and “but-they-made-me-do-it” defense.

But seeing as there’s not a whole lotta love between those two neighbors one would have to stay tuned. (On the other hand, a “superpower” led by a gang of preening, prevaricating criminals, whose putative figurehead is a stumbling infomercial for dementia and schizophasia, and whose military policy seems to be “let’s gut the armed forces”, would seem to offer a potentially tempting target…)

  39. Another interesting aspect of this involves recent reports that the reason this is coming out now is that there is a Chinese defector who has provide real evidence. Yet, IIRC, last year there were also numerous reports that there was at least one Chinese scientist from the Wuhan lab who had disappeared and was said to have defected to the US and was in protective custody. It may well be that the US has known all of this for a whole year, but the deep state sat on it good and hard for the purpose of getting rid of Orange Man Bad.

  40. @GB:

“””One wonders if Russia is “doomed to repeat it” since their general outlook and strategic analysis owes much to the “we’re perennial victims” mindset and “but-they-made-me-do-it” defense.”””

Goddam copycat Russians… Shouldn’t they be paying royalties to the entire Brill Building for that one?

Thank you for displaying the integrity to retract your earlier assertion. That is the kind of commentary and commenting that makes Neo’s blog such a (generally) valuable site to review. And a credit to the usual commenters, as well.
