Reports are that the feds tapped Michael Cohen’s phone… — 16 Comments

  1. It seems to me, that nothing is beyond the pale when it comes to the people involved in a conspiracy to over turn the 2016 election. Yes, it is a conspiracy. All are guilty until proven otherwise as far as I am concerned. A sad and dangerous state of affairs.

  2. You can only conclude that formerly known as the “rule of law” is no longer operable.

I have commented previously, and believe sincerely, that we will continue to sink in the slime until dishonest Prosecutors are charged with the crimes that they commit. Too often they go unscathed; and when they are punished, it is too often a wrist pat. It is a travesty to see how many lives are ruined by the slash and burn prosecutorial tactics that too many practice.

I will go one step further and say that we need a vigilant, pro-active, even ruthless, judicial monitoring entity with the power of impeachment. Judges who go outside the law, and exceed their mandate, should no longer be Judges. Life time appointment was not meant to be a blank check to make personal law or advance particular political agenda.

    Wishful thinking on both counts.

  3. And now NBC is correcting the story…

Not a wiretap just checking his phone logs.

Freaking unbelievable how dangerously incompetent and destructive these people are.

  4. Seriously, this isn’t reporting about a port commissioner in Biloxi or something this is a major story with ramifications that are endless and for the media to continually make these ‘mistakes’ is beyond troubling.

  5. Griffin-

“Freaking unbelievable how dangerously incompetent and destructive these people are.”

I have to keep in mind the sage advice of Professor Reynolds. He always says that before you throw out the term incompetent, make sure you know what they were trying to do.

I’m betting that ‘mistake’ was intentional: it helps to reinforce the cultural programming (for lack of a better term: I’d love to know if there is a real one I am missing). What comes through in all of these leaks and insinuations is that “Trump is a crook. All of the people he associates with are crooks.”

Even when they correct or walk back the ‘mistakes’ the damage is done and the seeds are planted.

    I’ll vote for that.

    Mistakes are unintentional.

  7. AesopFan,

That’s why I put mistakes in quotations. The mistakes always go one way and paint one side in a worse light.

  8. “Forget it Jake, it’s lawfare.”

Chinatown was a place where all the horrible sh_t happened, and now federal investigations and courtrooms are becoming the analog.

Don’t you love the latest posturing from Rod Rosenstein? He claims to be the last bulwark upholding the rule of law. Like HE’s the Sir Thomas Moore stopping the various Mr. Richs from the White House. I guess we’re supposed to have forgotten that as an officer of the court he knowingly(?) misrepresented the veracity of the Trump dossier to the FISC. Are the judges of the FISC really this toothless or do they just not care?

  9. OldFlyer: You say “we need a vigilant, pro-active, even ruthless, judicial monitoring entity.”

    We have one.

    It’s us.

    We need to organize.

  10. “…that must mean that the crime they were investigating was really awful”

That’s more of the ‘guilty until proven innocent’ thinking.

All of this originated in the FISA court, which was set up to oversee requests for surveillance against foreign spies in the US….and it now appears it was used to wiretap (or log?) Trump’s personal lawyer handling personal business matters related to a personal relationship he had 12 years ago. Wouldn’t this be, at best, an possible FEC violation? Not national security.

  11. Lizzy:

I think the Michael Cohen investigation is the SDNY, not FISA.

  12. CapnRusty, I fear that if you try to organize they will be on you with the full force of the Federal government. You will be a “White Supremacist”, an insurrectionist, or any other label that justifies dragging you in for questioning. And we know what happens when the FBI questions someone they have in their sights. One person’s paranoia is another’s realistic assessment.

If I sound pessimistic, then you read me correctly. However the good news is that at 82, I am concerned with a higher power than that of our out of control government and society. I do grieve a bit for children and grandchildren who have no inkling of what they are passively abetting.

On a positive note, I was with a childhood friend of my daughter over the weekend. She is a flaming Liberal, and we had agreed not to communicate via electronic means in the past. But, we found that face to face we could have a rational conversation. We did not agree on anything much, but at least we could discuss our opinions. So, that was a pleasant interlude.

  13. OldFlyer: I signed a blank check payable to Uncle Sam fifty years ago. He never cashed it. I’m willing to do that again, this time for the Rule of Law. Maybe we’re not alone. Check out this article at Belmont Club (R. Fernandez is a must-read):

Note, especially, this comment by “Bonnie”

My three youngest are all Generation Z. In middle school, my son came home with a glum expression. I asked him what was up.

“Today in history, they told me to hate America because of slavery. In science, they told me to hate America because of global warming. And in English, they told me to hate America because of, well, everything.”

I told him I was so sorry! He saw my distress and smiled.

“It’s okay, Mom. The more they tighten their grip, the more star systems slip through their fingers.”

    That’s Generation Z. I am optimistic.

  14. The problem with more and more laws is that lawyers eventually become a requirement. Then they make the laws.
