Another murder, this time by a legal immigrant

The moment I read this story of a horrific murder I wondered a few things:

An 18-year-old Wyoming man accused of robbing and shooting three members of a family after asking for roadside help told investigators he opened fire after one of the victims laughed at him, an FBI agent said in a court filing Thursday.

Jason Shane, 51, and Tana Shane, 47, died in the Wednesday shooting in the small town of Pryor, FBI spokesman Todd Palmer told The Associated Press. Their daughter, 26-year-old Jorah Shane, was shot in the back when she tried to run away, and she is recovering in a Billings hospital, the woman’s aunt, Ada Shane, said.

The statement by Special Agent Larry McGrail II was filed in U.S. District Court seeking a murder warrant for Jesus Deniz, also known as Jesus Deniz Mendoza, of Worland, Wyoming.

Whether or not he really shot them because “one of the victims laughed at him” (and I suspect that wasn’t the reason), did he actually think that reason would sound like a sufficient excuse for a killing?

What was his immigration status? Note that the article doesn’t even mention this as a possible issue; just the usual treatment of him as the resident of a certain state, in this case Montana.

It turns out that Deniz is a legal immigrant from Mexico who came to this country in May of 2013. The article does not explain how he got his legal status, but my very strong suspicion is that he probably was admitted under the rules about family unification (he would have been 16 years old then).

The details of this crime are especially heartrending and even could be called ironic, because the victims were Good Samaritans who had stopped to offer aid to Deniz:

[Lone survivor, 26-year-old] Jorah Shane recounted to her relatives the events leading to the shooting. Her mother, Tana Shane, drove by a young man parked on the side of the road who told her he had run out of fuel, Ada Shane said.

“He’s only 18, and he looked like an innocent boy,” Ada Shane said. “Both my brother and sister-in-law have big hearts.”

Tana Shane went by her house, picked up her husband and daughter, and they drove back to the stranded car, Ada Shane said. The man pulled a gun and held it to the temple of 51-year-old Jason Shane…

Deniz killed Tana and her husband Jason, and shot Jorah in the back but she lived to tell the tale. He also stole their car.

Another detail in this story is that the Shane family seems to be Native American:

The man told the family to start walking. Tana Shane told her daughter in their Native American language to run. Jorah Shane told her aunt that she heard a shot, started running then heard bullets whizzing by her head. She fell, heard another shot, and started running again toward a church just as a car was pulling out.

She ran to the car, and the frightened driver leaped out, Ada Shane said. Jorah Shane jumped in the driver’s seat and drove to her house with the shooter still firing at her, the aunt said.

The outrage sparked by incidents such as this is what Donald Trump is tapping into. Yes, it’s only one incident, but there are others, and each of them is an incident that didn’t have to happen if our immigration policy (in this case, our legal immigration policy) were more stringent.

  2. Crimes like this get to the heart of where our leaders have failed us: the most basic responsibility of national security. It’s hard not to feel that we’re being invaded, less like a military assault, more like a swarm of locusts.

    you OBVIOUSLY have not spent a lot of time as in the neighborhoods i have grown up in where being dissed is enough… ie. laughing would be a diss and shooting them would be an extreme form of retaliation because of what shakespeare made clear in terms of reputation

    so its often seen that things that affect a mans reputation or standing are seen to also affect his ability to earn and so on, and so take food from his childrens mouth.

    however, a lot of crazy people also respond agressively to stares or looks, which is why i wear lenses in ny. works great as i can watch them, and they cant see where i am looking and that makes the nutters tend to avoid you. in fact, the lady that was stabbed by the other woman on the six train was stabbed because the other woman said she stared at her. the day before i had the altercation with the same lady that did the stabbing, but she didnt bother as she could not see my eyes and so did not know if she could get away with it before i saw her, so moved on to her greener pastures.

    often the nutters take the position of the people who under machismo, and other cultureal things that multiculturalism makes more prevalent… as that seems like a better reason to them… people often give reasons that they think are acceptable but others in the world totally do not accept. (i remember a nazi who said he was just following orders)

    if you grow up as i did in an inner city (slum) area, you would understand the concept of diss and the cultural response. though like me, you dont necessarily agree with it… but understanding it can save you.

    probably marraige.. today in the news is a woman who has married 11 times in 10 years and guess what her thing is? yes. she is spanish… (the spanish do this more than other groups, and no, i no of no reason other than maybe it works)

    Actually, I understand the concept very well and have written about it at some length before.

    You are having a problem with my understated tone again—my question was mildly sarcastic.

    Here is a quote from my previous post on the subject:

    So I’m well aware of the phenomenon.

    However, I suspect that Deniz was lying here—I don’t think she laughed at him. I think he wanted to kill them and steal their car.

    So; so pardon us, if we take steps for our own security and protection. Drip, drip, drip … so it goes in flyover country: illegal aliens, recent aliens, criminal-and-oft-deported aliens. Local news in the Southwest, in the borderlands has story after story about this kind of thing. The situation is close to the point of boiling over, and that’s why my daughter and I are going this weekend for the classes required to get a concealed carry license.

  12. We’re responsible for the life and welfare of Americans (including babies) and legal immigrants first. Unfortunately, legal immigration exceeds the rate of assimilation and integration, which more than compensates for Planned Parenthood and planned parenthood. It’s the same problem bedeviling the Europeans. Not to mention the Israelis. Still, we are responsible for the legal immigrant who turned out to be a murderer, and the loss of two American lives at his hand.

    With H2H abilities, they can’t disarm you… without taking your arms and legs.

    A citizen protects his civilization. It’s a good chance to separate the wheat from the chaff. The citizens from the serfs/slaves.

    Deniz was also bored.

    Exactly. While there isn’t too much we can do about US-born criminals. Most folks feel that we should be able to do something to keep the foreign criminals from coming here.

    Also, when driving alone I would NEVER stop to offer help to anyone, except for an accident that just happened.

    I’ll bet that those three, if they even thought about their own safety, didn’t think that all three of them would be in danger like that. After all, they are three he is one; who would expect something like this to happen?

  23. It is not good enough to be merely “Good”. One must be strong enough to protect what you got, otherwise you aren’t a free independent citizen, you’re somebody’s serf and slave.

    If you depend on the police to defend you, if you depend overly much on the government to tell you what to do, you’re not a free American. You just think you are, to make yourself feel better about life.

    If you go into a room and don’t have a plan to kill everyone in it, there might be a problem. And that problem would be you, not what happens to you later on. When families stop to help others, they must first ensure that their own security and assets are secured.

    Those that are too weak to help themselves, have no business lecturing others or helping others.

I think we’re can guess from the news story: Hispanics “outrank” American Indians. (Maybe because they were insufficiently indignant over the Washington Redskins…?)

  32. I knew immediately looking at their photos that the family was Native American. Maybe Cheyenne or Crow? I don’t know but they were even dressed as though they were going to a tribal event, maybe a pow wow as there are so many in the summer. We used to drive through that area a lot in the summers on our way to my mother’s reserve in Alberta, so there are many Indians there and tribal events going on.

    This is just disgusting and so sad. I have a feeling that if the daughter did laugh at him, it was a giggle and not a derisive laugh. I can easily see a Native teenage girl doing that, they can be shy. This guy had had various weapons charges before, if I am not wrong, and was a criminal though he had not done anything like this. He was legal, but one wonders who we are letting in… and why. I do think we have every right to be choosy. In fact, the government has a DUTY to not let just anyone in. Of course, this is lost on the left.

    Truly sad and even worse since they stopped to help him. I do think he also just wanted to steal their car and money. Horrifying.

  33. Oops, their daughter was not a teenager. Still, I can easily see in my mind’s eye a giggle or chuckle and not a derisive laugh. I think this guy is paranoid or maybe, he is just lying about that. But of course, it should not matter. They were actually trying to HELP HIM and went out of their way to do so. Unbelievable!

  34. I don’t care if these are merely anecdotal stories about illegal and legal immigrants. Why are we looking to add ANY more criminals to the United States? We are the best country in the world. We deserve the best and brightest immigrants and we should do everything possible to screen out people who will not add positively to our country. Why in the heck should be let in people with no basic education? No money to support themselves? No interest in learning our language? Etc?
