Hitching a ride… — 2 Comments

  1. So, it’s come to this. Traffic jams of tourists on the paved game park roads. So many vehicles the impala chooses one as an escape hatch.

The African game parks are a marvelous place to see the dance of life and death as it goes on there. A throwback to the days when we weren’t necessarily at the top of the food chain.

Since the road is paved it’s probably pretty near to some towns. Thus it attracts large numbers of tourists. A bit like our National Parks.

I have been lucky enough to visit several game reserves in Kenya and Tanzania. Most of them were quite far from any towns or cities. And none of the roads were paved. Au contraire. Think about the worst pot-holed unpaved track through the countryside that you have ever been on. Then multiply it by four. So many of the tracks through the bush in East Africa are joltingly rough at 10-15 miles an hour. You see other vehicles, but never anything like the gaggle in the video.

Life in the bush of Africa is harsh, but it has a rhythm and a purpose that supports vast numbers of animals. There is an efficiency about it all with each animal/bird filling a niche that interlocks with other animals/birds. Austere but breathtakingly beautiful in so many ways. If you ever have a chance, go, by all means go.

  2. When animals become smarter than human voters in the 1st world… not quite sure what to say about that.
