The Blue Dogs… — 11 Comments

  1. this bodes well for containing the hanky-panky in the lame-duck session.
    Indeed.
Better her grandchildren than our country.

  2. The so called Blue Dogs were elected to *stop* this kind of thing and most went along with it – they never achieved the Barney Frank Incumbent status that would allow them to violate it. Two or six year (one term depending on which part of congress) isn’t enough to become the de-facto person in that seat.

I know of more than one independent that thought they had gotten control back from the govt (and some that got angry with me when I told them “No, those guys are democrats – they chose that party and their leadership”) that have said for the first time in their life “never again”.

The interesting part to me – that only time will tell if true – is how much power many in the democratic leadership lost. The Blue Dogs caved to their “wisdom” essentially – that is that this will work for them in the long run and found that to be not true. Indeed, more than a handful of secure seats were lost and a great deal of the “secure” were close, let alone those “blue dog” areas.

So, now when those same leaders ask for a tough vote and tell them not to worry – will they? I suspect that the answer will be “Yes, they worry”.

I do not think the democrats have really understood what was lost here yet, I think it will take time. While the Republicans haven’t really gained much (as said in another thread their victories were mainly anti-democrat), the democrats have through self immolation lost a GREAT deal of their power.

It remains to be seen how far that lose goes and who (if anyone) can pick it back up. However I suspect that a GREAT number will regret Obama, Pelosi, and Ried gaining the power that they did for a long time coming. While they may maintain their positions from seniority I think they have lost a HUGE amount of influence.

  3. Politico is reporting that an EPA official, Lisa Heinzerling, is leaving. She is the most rabid supporter of regulating carbon as a pollutant.

It sounds like Obama may be trying a different tactic to get that car out of the ditch. He will throw enough bodies under it till it’s elevated to the level of the road. I guess Obama thinks he can then cruise away. Problem is the windshield is opaque, the steering wheel spins unconnected to reality, and the car has no brakes. I don’t see people lining up for a ride with him.

  4. Tolerant Democrats, gracious in defeat:

Kelley Stahlin, the interim (Democrat) county clerk of Buchanan County, MO, ran for election to the position; Mary Baack-Garvey, her (Republican) opponent, was one of her co-workers.

Stahlin lost and, the day after the election, she fired Baack-Garvey, who will be sworn into Stahlin’s job in January.

The story (not surprisingly, the media plays Name That Party) is here; scroll down for links to interviews with the principals. The political affiliations are revealed here.

  5. The blue dems all fell into line with Pelosi. I’ll believe they’ll behave differently when I see it.

  6. As I understand it, the “Blue Dogs” were the brain child of Rahm Emanuel, who devised the tactic of putting up for election supposedly more moderate, fiscally conservative Democrats in more Republican-leaning conservative districts that would never elect a more free-spending, left wing Democrat, and it worked. However, from what I can see, the Blue Dogs–despite their posturing and rhetoric–just rolled over whenever Pelosi gave them the command to do so on key votes. So, good riddance!

However, I am concerned by reports that Republican establishment congressmen, instead of getting the message of fiscal conservatism i.e. stop spending!!!–want to keep to their old ways, and are planning to co-opt i.e. corrupt newly elected members who espoused fiscal conservatism, and to convert them into “go along to get along” free spenders too.

As many including I believe, this is the Republican’s last chance. No more games; results, not press conferences and speeches. Hard, sustained, courageous, informed, effective work, not double chins, unending groveling for donations and support from special interests, special deals for themselves, a bevy of very attractive female staffers, bowing, scraping, and unearned adulation, three thousand dollar suits, mutual congratulations and presenting awards to each other, and long, well lubricated lunches–to see and be seen–at pricey Capitol Hill watering holes.

If Republicans–in the face of predictable, fierce and widespread opposition, and the guaranteed howls of outrage, indignation, and pain that their actions will cause–cannot bring themselves to stand in the breach and shout No! (and I view being labeled the “Party of No” as an indication that they are doing exactly what they should be doing, and as a badge of honor), cannot make an honest, real, strenuous, all-out effort to drastically cut spending, cut entitlements, reign in government–by dramatically and substantially decreasing its power, size, cost and reach–cannot call to account, investigate, castigate, and prosecute those who run our government, back into closer adherence and fidelity to the Constitution, then they will lose all credibility and support, and they are finished as a party, and the Tea Party will morph into or support a third party for 2012.

  7. We here in Maine’s second district regrettably reelected our slimy Blue Dog Michaud. Although I still remember the day after the Obamacare vote. That was the day his web site mysteriously switched from Obamagasm Mode to debt-reduction mode.
