What do Presidents Obama, Calvin Coolidge, and Chester A. Arthur have in common? — 5 Comments

  1. >Yeah. I like that in a President…

Actually, it wasn’t President Obama’s fault that the oath was flubbed; it was Robert’s.

In all actuality, the “do-over” was not required in Obama’s case. It was simply the new administration being overly cautious.

  2. Coolidge and Arthur did not have to retake the oath. They did so for ceremonial purposes. Anyone who is a notary public can administer the presidential oath of office. That’s why there is always at least one notary public in the vice president’s Secret Service detail who carries a note card with the oath printed on it. Obama needed to retake the oath because he didn’t say the proper words.
