A terrorist attack of unknown origin in Iran
As a sort of companion piece to my previous post today, there’s this news from Iran:
Explosions at an event honoring a prominent Iranian general slain in a U.S. airstrike in 2020 have killed at least 103 people and wounded over 140 others, state-run media in Iran reported Wednesday.
A senior official called the blasts a “terroristic” attack, without elaborating on who could be behind them amid wider tensions in the Mideast over Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. …
The blasts struck an event marking the fourth anniversary of the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force, who died in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq in January 2020. The explosions occurred near his grave site in Kerman, about 500 miles southeast of the capital, Tehran.
I’m going to assume they certainly weren’t celebrating his killing – which occurred during the Trump administration – but mourning it.
As for who was responsible for this attack, it’s like an Agatha Christie novel: there are way too many suspects to say. But if it’s Israel – and I have no idea whether it is – it would be a way to remind Iran officials that we can get you, too.
Your final line identifies my hope. But internal or dissident forces may have done the targeting of the attack as well.
I stand by what I said. The Red Sea is a problem beyond anything we’ve faced since WW II.
I can see the Iranians doing it to their own people, to create ” martyrs “, and stoke hatred against everyone else.
If it were Israel, it means their people can do this, in what amounts to broad daylight. Like that nuclear scientist ambushed. But in the latter case, as in the Lebanon strike, it was necessary to know who, when, where. And know to wait. That means somebody on the inside.
The bomb blast yesterday…? Read the public notice and put the bomb you’ve made up out of…whatever in your trunk.
My immediate sense was that no way was this an Israeli deed — as simply not their mode or type to kill wholesale civilians this way — but could be MEK or some other internal Iranian government foe, there being ample cause and hatred amidst Iranians already present against the mullah-o-cracy
Iran is predominantly Persian in culture and its version of Islam. Good possibility there’s a lot of pent-up anger. And the dead were there, we presume, voluntarily, to honor a top example of the oppressors. So no sympathy from the Persians.
It’s highly unlikely that Israel conducted this bombing, it’s not their MO at all, and likely not in their interests given other priorities.
What I found interesting were reports that the crowd of mourners did not include any regime bigwigs or prominent power players as would normally be expected for such an event. The regime itself, or elements of the security services, must be included on the list of suspects.
Also, there are other factions including groups within Iraq who have quarrels with the heavy-handed Iranian masters, as well as ISIS types and PKK Kurds who might have motive.
Whomever carried out the deed, the world is a better place today than it was before the scum were eliminated.
I agree this attack isn’t in the Israeli MO, however I think they do have motive.
Iran is behind the Oct 7 attack, yet the US insists funding Iran and building it up via the Iran Deal. Israel has reason to disrupt this due to the Oct 7 attack and also due to Iran nearing development of the bomb.
I also don’t think this sounds like Israelis. Perhaps an internal dissident group?
I think it doesn’t really sound like the Israelis either.
Remember when Democrats tried to pretend that there would be horrible repercussions from the killing of Soleimani rather than admit that Trump had done something right? That was amusing, but quickly overshadowed by Covid.
A few analysts have suggested ISIS, an extension of Sunni-Shiite violence, but at this point nobody seems to know.
