Climate science as religion — 33 Comments

  1. Being religious seems to be baked into humans. A majority of people seem to prefer having absolute rules for living, a code of strictures, an outline of sins and virtues. And clearly humans will tend to fill the void left by religion with something very analogous.

  2. Thanks for the attaboy Neo. I’m flattered that you consider my contribution noteworthy.

  3. Critical race theory is similarly quasi-religious. In that religion, the sin of being born with non-African skin can never be forgiven.

  4. I’ve been arguing for about twenty years that atheism has become a religion, and that the AGW / Climate Change / Gang Green is a denomination of the larger religious movement. But I think it’s now it’s own separate religion. But they’re both religions at this point. The military has atheist chaplains! I imagine there may be some atheist chaplains who are also Gang Green.

“Religion” doesn’t really have a single very good definition. But the depth of devotion of the Gang Green sure seems in the realm of “faith.”

  5. Apropos of the EU’s approval of flour made from house crickets, locusts, and mealworm larvae– “food producers can use the powder in the production of several foods, including pizza and pasta-based products, nuts and oilseeds, snacks and sauces, meat preparations and soups, multigrain bread and rolls, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, dry pre-mixes for baked products, biscuits, processed potato products, legume- and vegetable-based dishes, whey powder, maize flour-based snacks, beer-like beverages and chocolate confectionery.food producers can use the powder in the production of several foods, including pizza and pasta-based products, nuts and oilseeds, snacks and sauces, meat preparations and soups, multigrain bread and rolls, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, dry pre-mixes for baked products, biscuits, processed potato products, legume- and vegetable-based dishes, whey powder, maize flour-based snacks, beer-like beverages and chocolate confectionery.”

The Eurocrats love this stuff– but one country– Italy– says Basta!

“The growing use in cooking of flour made from crickets, locusts and insect larvae has met fierce opposition in Italy, where the government is to ban its use in pizza and pasta and segregate it on supermarket shelves. . . . At the same time, and in an intriguing move, Italy has also applied for its cuisine to be placed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) list for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”

As for Germany, OTOH? At least one “ice cream parlour has expanded its menu with a skin-crawling offering – cricket-flavoured scoops with the dried brown insects on top.”

[Quick, somebody give Brandon a guided tour of this ice cream shop with a two-scoops free sample!]

  6. Indulgences? Check (carbon offsets, private jets for Kerry doing works)
    Original Sin? Check (Western Civ)
    Doomsday Extremist? Check (Extiction Rebellion)

  7. Also major cognitive dissonance. I repeatedly tell the OPPD Board that wind and solar is unreliable and expensive, but it is committed to spend at least $29b even in the face of China building two new coal-fired power plants per week in 2022.

  8. Cornhead, there’s no point in trying to reason with these people. Basic physics, math, and facts are meaningless to them. I tried for many years within the academic environment where one would think such people would be more open to reason. But, when it comes to “climate”, as Neo and the Sgt point out, it is really a religion. Kant’s “leap of faith” is alive and well within the cult.

  9. Recycling! A religious ritual to absolve us of our sins and save the planet.

A few years ago, I was at a small social gathering of friends at a woman’s house. She had the most elaborate recycling setup I’ve ever dealt with. Ridiculous. [There may be worse in blue cocoons, but this is red Tennessee.]

She’s an engineer working out at Oak Ridge. As I tried to navigate the approved way to dispose of what was left of my dinner and beer bottles, I gently mentioned to her that all these different bags of carefully separated garbage were going to end up together in the dump. She didn’t want to believe it. I gave her the names of some professors who’d written on the subject.

She thought a moment and said, “I don’t care. It makes me feel good.”

  10. Michael Crichton has a few speeches from the early 2000s that are excellent. He has a run down of all the ways that environmentalism mimics traditional Christian rituals and beliefs. I’ll go look for it.

    Here it is https://www.aei.org/carpe-diem/michael-chrichton-in-2003-environmentalism-is-a-religion/

“environmentalism is in fact a perfect 21st century remapping of traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs and myths. There’s an initial Eden, a paradise, a state of grace and unity with nature, there’s a fall from grace into a state of pollution as a result of eating from the tree of knowledge, and as a result of our actions there is a judgment day coming for us all. We are all energy sinners, doomed to die, unless we seek salvation, which is now called sustainability. Sustainability is salvation in the church of the environment. Just as organic food is its communion, that pesticide-free wafer that the right people with the right beliefs, imbibe.”

  11. http://www.hawaiifreepress.com/Articles-Main/ID/2818/Crichton-Environmentalism-is-a-religion

“So I can tell you some facts. I know you haven’t read any of what I am about to tell you in the newspaper, because newspapers literally don’t report them. I can tell you that DDT is not a carcinogen and did not cause birds to die and should never have been banned. I can tell you that the people who banned it knew that it wasn’t carcinogenic and banned it anyway. I can tell you that the DDT ban has caused the deaths of tens of millions of poor people, mostly children, whose deaths are directly attributable to a callous, technologically advanced western society that promoted the new cause of environmentalism by pushing a fantasy about a pesticide, and thus irrevocably harmed the third world. Banning DDT is one of the most disgraceful episodes in the twentieth century history of America. We knew better, and we did it anyway, and we let people around the world die and didn’t give a damn.

I can tell you that second hand smoke is not a health hazard to anyone and never was, and the EPA has always known it. I can tell you that the evidence for global warming is far weaker than its proponents would ever admit. I can tell you the percentage the US land area that is taken by urbanization, including cities and roads, is 5%. I can tell you that the Sahara desert is shrinking, and the total ice of Antarctica is increasing. I can tell you that a blue-ribbon panel in Science magazine concluded that there is no known technology that will enable us to halt the rise of carbon dioxide in the 21st century. Not wind, not solar, not even nuclear. The panel concluded a totally new technology-like nuclear fusion-was necessary, otherwise nothing could be done and in the meantime all efforts would be a waste of time. They said that when the UN IPCC reports stated alternative technologies existed that could control greenhouse gases, the UN was wrong.”

  12. It precedes the public activist campaigns for climate science. Pollution was recast as a sin (rather than a cost) at least as far back as the 1960s. I can barely remember the 1970s and the same dynamic was at work then.

A cost can be offset with a benefit, or by paying more, but a sin can only be atoned for or absolved. It’s ok to plan to incur a cost, but it is not ok to plan to commit a sin.

  13. Speaking of miracles!!
“How The Collapse Of SVB Led To A $16 Billion Taxpayer-Funded Gift For One Bank”—
    https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/how-collapse-svb-led-16-billion-taxpayer-funded-handout-one-bank
    Key grafs:
“Something remarkable happened yesterday: just after midnight on Sunday night, the FDIC announced that a small bank which almost nobody had heard of before, First-Citizens Bank & Trust (FCNCA) would scoop up the remaining assets of the now defunct Silicon Valley Bank, which imploded on March 9 following a furious bank run, that saw $42BN in deposits drained in hours (and where another $100 billion in deposits were about to be yanked on Friday, which is why the FDIC stepped in and shuttered the bank before market open on Friday March 10)…
“… and what happened next shocked everyone—FCNCA stock almost doubled, soaring to the highest on record.
“But why would the value of the Raleigh, North Carolina-based First Citizens double in seconds if all it did buy assets which until just a few weeks ago were viewed as worthless.
“Well, because they were not worthless. Yes, SIVB certainly had its share of massive MTM losses on its HTM book (consisting primarily of Mortgage Backed Securities), but it also had solid loans and it is these loans that First Citizens bought for a song.
“As the following chart annotated by Wasteland Capital shows, the deal that First Citizens inked was nothing short of spectacular and explains how the small bank managed to double its stock price overnight….”

I guess the 64,000,000 dollar question is: Who’s running things at First-Citizens Bank & Trust? And what kind of connections do THEY have…?

  14. “At least one “ice cream parlour has expanded its menu with a skin-crawling offering – cricket-flavoured scoops with the dried brown insects on top.”

[Quick, somebody give Brandon a guided tour of this ice cream shop with a two-scoops free sample!]” PA+Cat

Brilliant idea! Trump should do everything within his power to slip unbeknownst to Biden such an ice cream cone.

  15. Given the Climate Change religion’s basic tenets, there is only one way to save the planet and consequently, the human race.

    Population reduction, severe… population reduction.

  16. I think there are plenty of people pushing this stuff that know the immediate inputs do not outweigh the benefits.

But the beauty of an all electric consumer base is it can be so easily controlled. Get all consumer energy usage; home heating, cooling, cooking and transportation under the control of the local electric utility and then your consumption can be easily and instantly rationed.

    True equity.

“Mr. Jones, you want to live in a 4,500 sq.ft. suburban home with two SUVs and a sports car in the garage? Well, we allocate kwh based on the average energy consumption in our region, which also includes tens of thousands of people living in 1,000 sq. ft. apartments who use public transportation. Have fun managing your household on the average kwh allotted.”

If your goal is a cleaner environment electric is not always the answer, but it is the fastest path to total control in our current circumstance. Just like every monarchical or martial government in human history co-opted religion as a propaganda tool; the atheists behind this desire to control and shape human behavior use religious tenets to form a mass army of crusaders who will enforce their will.

But they underestimate the ingenuity of individuals and the drive of many individuals to remain independent. As governments push more and more down this path more and more people will go off the grid and come up with more ingenious ways to make that possible. It will be impossible to do without martial force.

  17. Geoffrey Brittain: Population reduction has already started. China’s population decreased in 2022, and the decline will accelerate in the next few years. They have about 150 million MORE people age 35 to 75 than age 0 to 30! Japan, South Korea, Russia, Portugal, … , are losing population right now. Most other European countries will start losing as will the U.S. within the next 25 or so years.
The political pronouncements of the IPCC and the COP meetings ignore this and make predictions based on 12 billion people in 2100.

  18. What Rufus said.
    It’s about total control…
…which will totally kick in when digital currency and ONLY digital currency will be “introduced”…

  19. Thanks, Kate.
    Interesting.
(So does this mean a whole lotta new Little-League fields in NC….? And perhaps a bit more than that?)
Actually, what I also find fascinating is that he was able to get the wheat while the American taxpayer is getting the chaff. (And there’s a whole lotta chaff.)

But maybe he really had his eye on the ball on this one…

  20. Total control, continued:
Since total control has, in fact, become the RELIGION of the Left (and the Democratic Party), Matt Taibbi has come to the conclusion, entirely justified and entirely irrefutable, that…the “Democrats have ditched free speech”:
‘ “Something Very Dramatic Has Changed”: Matt Taibbi Says Democrats Ditched Free Speech ‘—
    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/something-very-dramatic-has-changed-matt-taibbi-says-democrats-ditched-free-speech

Essentially, free speech gets in their way…to achieve total power.
    So does the Truth.
And so does the Constitution, which will be one of the next things they will try to throw over the side.
(Will try? They’ve already been making strenuous efforts…and huge strides towards that goal.)

  22. For good measure, here’s a glimpse into what “Nothing to Hide”—AKA good ole “Transparency”(TM)—means to the “Biden” administration:
    ‘ DHS heavily redacted Disinformation Board emails despite claiming agency had nothing to hide;
‘ After claiming the Disinformation Governance Board would be run in line with “best practices,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is now shielding communications that may reveal its true purpose.’—
    https://justthenews.com/government/federal-government-heavily-redacts-dhs-disinformation-board-emails-masking-how-and-why
    Opening grafs:
‘ When the existence of the Disinformation Governance Board burst into public view, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said there was nothing sinister to hide and claimed the office was rooted in “best practices.”
‘ A year later, Mayorkas’ department is refusing to let Americans see most of the legal justifications and talking points it created to defend the now-disbanded board from “blowback,” FOIA documents showed.
‘ More than 100 pages of internal communication between the board’s former executive director, Nina Jankowicz, and her staff were released with heavy redactions to the conservative nonprofit Citizens United….’

    But of course….

File under: “PAY NO ATTENTION to that man behind the curtain…”

  23. Speaking of disinformation…

“Thirteen ways of looking at disinformation”—
    https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news/articles/guide-understanding-hoax-century-thirteen-ways-looking-disinformation
    H/T Lee Smith Twitter roll.
    Key grafs:
‘…For more than half a century, McCarthyism stood as a defining chapter in the worldview of American liberals: a warning about the dangerous allure of blacklists, witch hunts, and demagogues.
‘ Until 2017, that is, when another list of alleged Russian agents roiled the American press and political class. A new outfit called Hamilton 68 claimed to have discovered hundreds of Russian-affiliated accounts that had infiltrated Twitter to sow chaos and help Donald Trump win the election. Russia stood accused of hacking the social media platforms, the new centers of power, and using them to covertly direct events inside the United States.
None of it was true. After reviewing Hamilton 68’s secret list, Twitter’s safety officer, Yoel Roth, privately admitted that his company was allowing “real people” to be “unilaterally labeled Russian stooges without evidence or recourse.”
‘ The Hamilton 68 episode played out as a nearly shot-for-shot remake of the McCarthy affair, with one important difference: McCarthy faced some resistance from leading journalists as well as from the U.S. intelligence agencies and his fellow members of Congress. In our time, those same groups lined up to support the new secret lists and attack anyone who questioned them.
When proof emerged earlier this year that Hamilton 68 was a high-level hoax perpetrated against the American people, it was met with a great wall of silence in the national press. The disinterest was so profound, it suggested a matter of principle rather than convenience for the standard-bearers of American liberalism who had lost faith in the promise of freedom and embraced a new ideal.…’ [All emphasis mine; Barry M.]

Meanwhile, the Democrats continue to roll the nation…downward; lying indiscriminately (which lies they call “truth”) and censoring “inconvenient” truths, (which truths they call “lies”, “disinformation”, “misinformation”, “fake news”)…

…and ALL of this, they would claim, for “the benefit” of the nation and its citizens—just ask ’em!—as they seek to consolidate total, impregnable and unassailable power…

  24. Another link in the chain of amassing TOTAL POWER:
“Peter Schiff: Bank Bailouts Will Devalue The Dollar”—

    https://issuesinsights.com/2023/03/28/evs-are-the-yugo-of-the-21st-century/

    General rule of thumb:
The more CRISES the better….in order to gain TOTAL POWER over the masses.
This is why the war in Ukraine will likely not end any time soon and inflation will HAVE TO continue to climb…while other crises will persist with no one in government trying to solve them—to the CONTRARY—and still others will be created and instigated against the citizenry.
“Biden” has essentially created the “Department of Crisis Creation”, though of course “he” cannot call it that.
(Maybe one ought to use the anglicized Orwellian model: MiniCri…though to be truly Orwellian, it would have to be called the Ministry of Solutions, MiniSol)

In fact, CRISIS may well have become the new religion (or one of its branches).

File under: Cry CRISIS and let slip the dogs of war.

  25. Barry M., the current leader of First Citizens Bank is Frank B. Holding Jr., a grandson of the bank’s founder. He has previously guided the bank in a couple other purchases of failed banks, working with the FDIC, and quadrupling the size of the bank, including this latest purchase. He knows what kind of assets to look for, and the bank is considered very solid. Basically, a sensible conservative businessman with his eye on business.

  26. Total Control(TM), continued:

    “The Great Food Reset has begun;
“We all lose from the global war on farmers”—

    “We all lose”?
Ah, but that’s the WHOLE point! (aside from massive CENTRALIZATION of the food supply, with those earnest WTF elites—our betters—pulling the strings…since centralization has SUCH a good track record…)

Thankfully, the Dutch have other ideas (Boer Back Better?)

P.S. Might one wonder whether this is behind all those sabotaged food plants?

  27. Cow farts vs insect farts .. appears that insects generate more co2 per pound than cows due to faster metabolism.
