  1. Thanks Neo for that bit of History. We often think of History in context of our lives and not necessarily connections. I am 76, my Greatgrandfather fought in the Civil War with his 3 brothers (2 died in that Conflict) for the Confederacy, their Father fought in the War of 1812. I can’t go back further than that. I would bet that other here can do much the same with their connections.

  2. That brings up the old question as to how long a ” generation” is ? Is it the time until one generation starts reproducing or when one mostly stops reproducing ? Is it the lifetime of one group? It seems that in the near term, we consider the next generation as having started when our peers start having children, but when we look back in history,we sometimes consider a longer view.

  3. But Joy Reid’s grandfather came ashore in 1619. Suppressed history! Facts are stubborn things.(sarc)

Talk about inflation! $60 and a bottle of Bufferin for the laconic Tennesee sisters.

  4. Searching for my “roots,” I’ve been working on my family tree for some 30 years now.

Starting from scratch and, with the exception of one maternal uncle who kindly sketched out a spare, couple generation’s long maternal tree populated with a half dozen or so names, the living relatives back then, at the start, hardly remembered any family history at all, nor cared to—no documents, no pictures, no momentos.

An attitude I couldn’t really understand but, then, I was trained as a historian.

You’d think that people might want to remember where they came from–”the old country,” or have a lot of stories about and memories of notable family members from past generations, but that was not the case; the historical amnesia was strong, and possibly deliberate.

Now, though, they’re all gone, and any knowledge I might have been able to pry out of them with more persistent and careful questioning is gone as well.

Moreover, over the course of the last almost decade—and very much to my surprise—a boatload of pretty unbelievable serendipity and DNA analysis has proven that much that I thought I had discovered via paper documents, and thought I knew with rock solid certainty, was totally wrong.

Not interested until then, but about four years ago I started to realize that as far back on the tree as I had gone, it appeared that I had five or six maternal ancestors who fought in the Revolution.

So far, I have been able to prove one of these lines to the satisfaction of the lineage society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

The further back you go in history the fewer primary records–birth, death, marriage–there are, and many of the oldest records are contained in things like family bibles, are kept at local court houses, and in church records, some of which may be unavailable for research, or totally unorganized–i.e. “oh, those records burned in the fire,” “got soaked in the flood and were thrown out” or, “here’s a basement full of jumbled boxes of totally unorganized, often musty, partially destroyed old records, have at ’em.”

Many older records are not yet digitized–and may never be–so you have to travel to the repository that holds them.

When I was younger–several decades ago–I traveled around, state to state, doing such local investigation, but that’s no longer possible. Alternatively, you could locate and hire a genealogist to do such local research for you, but that gets expensive real quick.

(If you talk to, say, Ancestry about using the services of their professional genealogists, you’ll find that even a minimal research package will start in the low thousands.)

  5. An aunt on my father’s side of the family has done some deep genealogy. She traced our routes back to the Norman invasion of England. Also, my great grandfather on that side of the family married one of Benjamin Rush’s granddaughters. Our claim to fame. 🙂 We know a lot about that lineage.

On my mother’s side we have the family Bible from my great-grandparents and many oral stories told to me by my grandfather. My maternal great grandfather was too young to serve in the Civil War, but he spent his adult life (1879 -1935) traveling about Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota doing carpentry work.

Both sides of my family have some roots in Scotland and Ireland. Some moved from Scotland to Ireland and them migrated to the U.S. during the potato famine in Ireland.

I finally relented and joined Fox Nation. (Why not, it’s free for a year to vets.) I viewed the four episodes by Kevin Costner – “Yellowstone 150.” This is the150th anniversary of the park and this documentary was done to honor that. Gorgeous scenes, excellent wildlife footage, and a compelling story of how the park was explored and became the first national park. The background music is a bit overdone, but I really enjoyed the four episodes.

During the 60s and 70s we spent several vacations camping in Yellowstone. We know the park well and love it dearly. I hope someone will do a documentary or story covering the history of the management and mismanagement of the park. That would be an interesting and timely contribution at this point in the history of our national parks. Probably won’t be done because it would be very controversial.

  6. A generation is typically 20 years so lincoln noticed it had been about 4 since the revolution, think how much the world has changed in the last 87 years

  7. Been walking Valley Forge National Park 40 years, and now as I go will think of those two ladies, and their teenage grandfather, playing his fife as he marches across those rolling hills.

  8. “Billions” is the Showtime series I’ve been bingeing lately. It’s about the conflict between a brilliant, unscrupulous hedge fund guy versus a brilliant, unscrupulous state attorney general. Billions of dollars are at stake, hence the title.

Granted, it settles into the usual long-arc tropes concerning bad people, whom one can somewhat identify with, doing bad things and eventually end badly.

However, before I settled into the soap opera, power politics of it all, I noticed how all-consuming life was for the very rich and very powerful. And how much of it was based upon exchanging favors for skirting/subverting the law.

“Billions” is a TV show, i.e. fictional, but I suspect it’s nonetheless true that pursuing high levels of wealth or power is a 24/7 proposition. Such aspirants have little time or inclination to question the assumptions of their tribe.

To the rich and powerful, the rest of us are vague generalizations, statistics. That’s driving much of what I see.

  9. to get the gist its a road runner and coyote show, bobby axe and chuck rhoades,
one runs a hedge fund, one is her pursuer, both are the epitome of amorality, it’s ‘informed’ by insights andrew ross sorkin the cnbc reporter whose doorstop of a book misunderstood the subprime crisis at a fundamental level, but on that primal plateau it explains the savage jungle that enables an ftx and mf global to flourish,

game of thrones on wall street, or probably closer to the late michael thomas’s financial thriller, his father was a big wig at Lehman brother if memory serves,
I’m leaving details of the amoral behavior practiced by them or their significant others,

  10. An interesting aspect to “Billions” is that the brilliant hedgie guy mentors a super-brilliant young female with a shaved head whose pronouns are “they, them, and their.” “Their” name, may I say, is Taylor.

I would still recommend “Billions” as an enjoyable long-arc bad guy series, but it does have these weird woke moments, where even the working-class hedgie guy or the John Malkovich ex-KGB oligarch are careful to use Taylor’s pronouns properly, as if doing so were the most natural thing in the world.

There are minor civil wars on Reddit over this.

Taylor is the first Zoomer character I’ve noticed in Hollywood fare.

  11. I mentioned a counterpart series, aired as a joint italian/Sky News aired on the CW, about two years apart, Devils, which is loosely a roman a clef by a former Baer exec (the bank that assange first cracked) now working for warburg, there is a clash of wills between Massimo’s the author’s manque and Derek Morgan, the ruthless American frontman for a London hedgefund, Brera the author, is very cynical about the commanding heights he describes in two blocks, the era before the subprime and european crackup, and brexit and the covid emergence

it’s not that dry, there plenty of violence and a fair amount of sex, well as much as network tv can allow,

  12. EMERGENCY REPORT-

According to the two knowledgeable western vloggers I follow who cover China–Serpentza and Laowhy86–people in China have just had enough with draconian Zero Covid restrictions and everything else, a breaking point has been reached, and in the last couple of days there have been a growing number of uprisings, attacks against and kidnappings of local officials, burnings of police stations, massive crowds in the streets, attacks against police, and crowds of people openly chanting for Xi to step down or yelling “Fuck the CCP” (something that usually gets you beat up, arrested, and “disappeared”), and these protests/uprisings/attacks are breaking out all across China–from the biggest first tier cities to the smallest settlements, and apparently spreading.

These vloggers say that these are apparently the largest protests since Tiananmen Square in 1989, and the Chinese government is deploying massive numbers of police and the military, jamming cell phone communications, taking down posts on Chinese Internet, doing everything they can to try to stop their spread, and to quell these growing disturbances.*

    * See their Emergency Report with confirming videos at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPRDLqggwQU

  13. Another interesting aspect of “Billions” is that the super-brilliant Taylor parrots the circa-2018 wisdom that fossil fuels would be superseded within ten-twenty years.

More and more it seems to me the elite/progressive world was truly captured by this idea to the extent it became flat earth groupthink. If JFK could point his finger at the Moon, surely we could point ours at solar panels and wind farms, then make it so.

Even though the scientists and engineers were smart enough to know better.

    Headings, Copybook, Gods of.

  14. @ miguel > “hmm”

Even HMMMM-ier, follow the links from the story that Not The Bee found (I do wonder what their reading list looks like – they post the strangest things sometimes, that don’t show up on the regular round of punditry).

It’s pretty clear that the little bank was bought precisely because it was little and old-school. They completely controlled the customer list that jumped in once it was set up (all 4 clients), thus the deposits and transfers (real and crypto) and all the administrative details
(I do wonder what the bank’s existing clientele thinks about all of this).

The money laundering was thus totally under their control, no pesky mandated reports getting out unvetted, if at all.
And the regulators can’t possibly have missed all the red flags, just by accident.

The amount of corruption in our government agencies and officials is gargantuan.

  16. The blind dinner date of Trump, Kanye West, and Nick Fuentes (with possibly more people; see Breitbart post below), raised an interesting question in my mind that I have seen addressed only by a very few commenters on the other blogs I frequent, and by Not the Bee, although it is one that every pundit throwing out the story ought to be asking.

Why is Ye, a Black American who claims to be one of the “real Jews” (Black Hebrew Nationalists) sashaying around with Fuentes, a for-real White Supremacist / Christian Nationalist (depending on your source)??

    https://notthebee.com/article/why-is-kanye-hanging-out-with-nick-fuentes

Kanye West has been hanging out with actual white nationalist Nick Fuentes and I have questions.
    ..
What even is this timeline? Kanye is running for president and his two closest advisors are Nick Fuentes and Milo Freaking Yiannopoulos?

Actual white supremacist, actual segregation proponent, actual Holocaust denier.

What the heck is Kanye doing? Has he finally lost his marbles?

    What is going on?

One of the Tweets in the post was a video of West talking to Yiannopoulos, and I just gotta say, Milo in a 3-piece-banker-suit-with-tie is just wrong.
I would not have known who he was without the lead-in.

    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2022/11/25/trump-dined-at-mar-a-lago-with-white-nationalist-holocaust-denier-nick-fuentes-alongside-kanye-west/

In a separate tweet, West released screenshots of text messages purportedly between himself, Fuentes, Milo Yiannopoulos, and an unidentified person whose name is blurred out.

In this screenshot, the person identified as Fuentes specifically says he spoke to Trump. The unidentified person first surmises and blames former Trump aide and current GETTR CEO Jason Miller for leaking the sighting of Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago in conjunction with West’s meeting with Trump. After the person identified as Yiannopoulos responds saying Trump’s 2024 presidential announcement speech was written by Miller, the unidentified person asks the person identified as Fuentes if he told Trump during dinner that Miller did not like Fuentes.

Fuentes responds: “Yes. I told him that Jason Miller had me banned on Gettr.”

West replies to that: “I told Nick to tell the former president that Nick hated his speech.”

In addition to these developments, two people who say they were at the dinner on Tuesday evening–Yiannopoulos and onetime Trump aide Karen Giorno–have publicly stated that Fuentes was in fact at the dinner with West and Trump.

“Nick attended the dinner and sat across from the president. I sat to the president’s right and Ye to his left,” Giorno said in a statement to podcaster Tim Poole’s website Timcast. “The president was by himself for dinner but invited Ye to meet some people on the patio.”

Cassandra Fairbanks, the author of the article on Timcast that quotes Giorno–who is now working for West’s 2024 campaign after having worked for Trump in 2016–and Yiannopoulos adds in a later sentence citing Yiannopoulos on record confirming the presence of Fuentes at the dinner with Trump: “Though Trump allegedly flew off the handle at Ye, he was ‘dazzled’ by Fuentes, Yiannopoulos told Timcast.”

The syntax on that last paragraph could be better, but I’ve given up flogging that turnip for online reports.
    I have questions too.
Why are Milo and Giorno missing from most of the breathless reporting on the dinner meeting?
What did the other people on the patio have to say?

Your boy Vlad has fiented from Kiev, Kharkhiv, and Kherson. He can’t take Bakmut. He can’t use his airport Donetsk. He can’t fully use his only bridge to Crimea. He can’t protect his airfields in Crimea, nor his naval base at Vladivostok. He can’t protect his oil terminal on the Russian Black Sea; Ukrainian drones hit it last week.

Vlady can target Ukrainian power plants and substations but thats about it.

My mistake, he can get lots of Russian men (young and not so young) killed, but hopefully fewer Ukrainians.

Vlad can’t take too much more “winning.” He can’t even get his minion in Belarus to do his bidding.

    But you’ve got his back.

    Time will tell.

    Enjoy.

  21. Barry Meislin:

Yes, a spear wound through the ribs is just like a …. At least according to a PhD theology student who can’t tell what a man or woman actually is. Physical reality and the delusions of higher learning.

  22. AesopFan–Yes, they include the video of the cries of a women trapped–along with many others–in the burning building who can’t escape because their doors and windows have been welded shut in service of China’s Zero-Covid lockdowns.

Many people have had their doors and windows welded shut and other exits blocked because of Xi’s Zero Covid directive, been dragged off to be imprisoned for months in Covid isolation boxes, imprisoned in their apartments for months on end, and totally reliant on the government to deliver food–and many have starved, or died because they couldn’t get out to get medial help.

But that is just one situation among many–there are also people’s children being taken from them and put into lockdown camps, there was the recent escape by thousands of workers from the biggest Apple I phone plant–reportedly a camp with 200,000 workers in it–who were trying to flee a likely lockdown.

Then, there is the housing collapse, with millions of already being paid for high rise apartments, and whole new cities never finished–ghost cities, many featuring extremely shoddy construction which looks good on the surface but which is crumbling just a year or two after completion. This with real estate being the only investment vehicle available to the average Chinese, and comprising a sizeable fraction of the Chinese economy.

In addition, there is the refusal of some banks–many involved in financing these purchases of real estate–to give depositors the money they have deposited, and purchasers in an increasing number of cities refusing to pay their mortgages.

Moreover, there is the constant monitoring of everyone via facial recognition software, and social credit scores which determine your ability to be able to live–to get a job, to shop and purchase anything, to travel, to get admitted to a hospital, to open a bank account, to get yourself or your children into a school, or to rent an apartment. Now, added to that, there are Covid lockdown status symbols on everyone’s cell phone.

    And on and on.

It looks like some sort of tipping point has been reached.

See the very well connected to China and Chinese sources Serpentza and Laowhy86’s Youtube channels (their ADV China channel and new China Show as well) for details and videos.

  23. Actually, with these people, I believe it’s more a case of push buttonso ergo sum than anything else, really (sorry, my Latin’s a bit rusty)…

(One sorely wishes they’d grow up…)

  24. “Not much on this rising turmoil and civil unrest in China has appeared yet in the MSM…”

Well, they’re still trying to figure out how to “handle” this story, seeing that it might insult just another one of “Biden”‘s sensitive allies (cf. the “deja-vu-all-over-again” response by “Biden” to the heroic protesters defying death, rape and severe beatings in The Islamic Republic of Iran…)

And wouldn’t ye’ know it: here comes ANOTHER “Biden” ally, just in a nick a’ time, to roil the already muddy waters with a rather “inconvenient truth”… (well, inconvenient ONLY if one hasn’t been paying attention…)

  25. Speaking of China, its reported that a lot of Chinese drones are starting to show up over restricted airspace areas like the White House, Capitol building, and the Pentagon.*

(When these increasingly ubiquitous drones–almost all made in China–first started to show up, I read that their software is set up to initially rout all commands and information they gather through servers in China, so I haven’t purchased one.)

  26. Another way—the MOST ACCURATE way?—to look at the FTX scandal:
Economic war waged by elites against their enemies.
In so-called “Democracies”, “enemies” would include the people they purportedly were elected to represent…but who ultimately ONLY get in the way of the elites’ GOAL of TOTAL POWER.
“A Grand Unified Theory Of The FTX Disaster”—
    https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/grand-unified-theory-ftx-disaster

The message: IF—SINCE?—Democracies, as it might seem (or more than MIGHT), have degenerated into a web of grotesquely convoluted, opaque BUREAUCRACIES whose GOAL and PURPOSE is to rule without any public input or regulation—IOW, interference (AKA to rule with TOTAL and NEVER-ENDING POWER)—one can begin to understand the admiration that Klaus Schwab and his ilk, his allies and his minions hold for the Communist Party of China.

The challenge, POLITICALLY, for “Biden” as well as for Trudeau (and other WTF fellow travelers who have embraced, or have been seduced by, the WTF’s elitist AUTHORITARIAN ideology) is, therefore, to appear to oppose such blatant authoritarianism while doing their utmost to emulate it AND ultimately to find a way to IMPLEMENT IT or something approaching it.

Hence all the lies, all the NECESSARY crises, all the bizarre pronouncements and policies…all the stolen elections….

    (IOW, all the MALARKEY….)

They MUST CEMENT their power over the people while claiming that they are doing so FOR THE PEOPLE…in finest Orwellian tradition.

THEY MUST ALSO dispose of their enemies…using the time-honored tradition of labeling those enemies in JUST THE WAY “Biden”—with the enthusiastic help of “his” colluding political, media, infotech, and mega-corporation co-conspirators—has been doing.

And since power includes ECONOMIC POWER, then crooked entities such as FTX MUST BE created, nurtured and milked…for the good of the Democratic Party, that is…for the good of EVERYONE(!)…

  27. Michelle Malkin announced last month that she was retiring from the business of topical commentary, something she’s been doing since 1992. I’m not seeing this acknowledged and discussed any place, including the sites she herself founded (now operated by Salem Media). Creators Syndicate, which has distributed her column since 1999, has the penultimate column she produced, but not this terminal column. The only place I see it is at Unz, which is a collecting pool of the most peculiar characters (leavened with a few like Steven Sailer and John Derbyshire, who are lucid but too outre to be published elsewhere).

Malkin has for over 20 years been the most vigorous, perspicacious, and unintimidated advocate of starboard causes. That she is sufficiently disgusted and demoralized to call it quits is most distressing. She gives no hint of what she and her husband will be doing going forward. (She is 52 as is he).

Keri Smith wrote the book on SWJ and CRT indoctrination and escape (SEE her YT videos and web site). But this adds more elitist evil to the lasting damage this neoMarxist hate-rage story.

  30. I am cross posting this recommendation to read this essay by Roger Kimball because I find it particularly insightful in zeroing in on where we stand today, and it needs to be more widely read–

Here is one of the quotes which open this learned, timely, and very worth while essay by Roger Kimball on the great moral divide at which we in the West now stand–

“Day by day, month by month, doubt by doubt, law and order became fascism; education, constraint; work, alienation; revolution, mere sport; leisure, a privilege of class; marijuana, a harmless weed; family, a stifling hothouse; affluence, oppression; success, a social disease; sex, an innocent pastime; youth, a permanent tribunal; maturity, the new senility; discipline, an attack on personality; Christianity . . . and the West . . . and white skin.”

—Jean Raspail, The Camp of the Saints”

  31. Shamelessness unplugged….
“Fauci Blames Trump For China’s COVID Cover Up”—
    https://www.zerohedge.com/covid-19/watch-fauci-blames-trump-chinas-covid-cover

I’ll spare you the details. Here’s the short version:
(Um, you may want to sit down for this one….)

…Yeah, so…I really would have preferred otherwise—I’m a decent guy, you all know that, I REALLY care for people, I’ve been doing it for my whole life—but unfortunately:
    – I had to lie because of Trump.
    – China had to lie because of Trump.
    – (Ergo it’s TRUMP’S FAULT that all these millions of people died and that the global economy nose-dived.)
    – Everyone’s lying because of Trump.
    – We’re destroying the country because of Trump.
    – We’re destroying the World because of Trump.
    – Etc… Because of Trump…
    – You name it!…Because of Trump…

Now one might be prompted to, um, ask: “Well…OK…, BUT WHY ARE YOU STILL LYING? WHY is China STILL lying? WHY is “Biden” STILL lying?
(ALL rhetorical questions, to be sure…)

Nonetheless, if you say it LONG ENOUGH (and LOUD ENOUGH) it does become, as we all know, THE TRUTH!
Hey, let’s give it a try:
TRUMP’S FAULT TRUMP’S FAULT TRUMP’S FAULT TRUMP’S FAULT…(my but this IS tiring…nonetheless ALL for the BEST of causes….)
