The attack on Paul Pelosi — 74 Comments

  1. Rand Paul has condemned the attack. Unlike Christine Pelosi, Nancy’s daughter, who praised the attack on Paul.

  2. Seems to be a local crazy person, although my daughter put down 25 cents, betting that it was an escort. I’m also a little baffled at low lax security was, even if San Fran Nan herself wasn’t in residence.

  3. }}} Emphasis mine: Paul Pelosi was specifically targeted, severely beaten with a hammer and suffered blunt force injuries to his head and body. The sources said Pelosi is being treated for injuries including bruising and severe swelling.

Not to make light of something that should not be happening (not even to the Pelosi’s — short of a revolution anyway) but…

“Severely beaten”? He’s 80, with brittle bones that come with that age, yet no broken bones when beaten with a HAMMER?

You can break “old people bones” by squeezing too hard, FFS.

Whoever this was, they didn’t have much ability to harm or really wasn’t trying to do harm.

A CT notion would suggest this was done to justify notably increased security around all of Congress in the coming days “for some reason…”. :-/

    }}} suspect David Depape

No picture, strangely enough… “I wonder why?”

  4. Local crazy person is a Canadian, originally from British Columbia, and presently estranged from his family. “An online blog named frenlyfrens.com was started in August of this year by a person with the screen name DavidDepape, which featured a number of disturbing conspiracy-led posts and rants. Headings on the blog included: Climate Hysteria, Covid, Immigrants, Pedo Gate and Communism.”

“Pelosi and Depape were both taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where NBC reported Pelosi was undergoing surgery. Scott also said Depape has been booked on charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and ‘several other additional felonies.’ A motive for the crime is still being determined, according to San Francisco police.”

Photo of the perp at the link: https://nypost.com/2022/10/28/intruder-who-attacked-paul-pelosi-identified-as-david-depape/

My conspiracy theory is that Depape is a secret agent of Justin Trudeau, sent to pilfer Nancy Pelosi’s gourmet ice cream. Slightly OT observation: Zuckerbucks is now funding hospitals to the point of getting his name attached to them? Buying elections isn’t enough for him any more?

  5. Did he go in with a hammer or did PP try to use it in defense and DD overpowered him and then assaulted PP?

  6. I’m still not understanding why a common-and-garden security system was not installed in the house or not turned on if it was installed.

  7. NBC
Pelosi was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he is recovering from surgery on his head, a source at the hospital with firsthand knowledge says. Previous reports citing a hospital source said he was undergoing brain surgery.

  8. I’m still not understanding why a common-and-garden security system was not installed in the house or not turned on if it was installed.

Maybe Paul forgot to turn on the security system because he fell asleep after a little nightcap; he was charged with DUI when he cracked up his Porsche last May.

  9. Neo:

    All the article said was
The sources said Pelosi is being treated for injuries including bruising and severe swelling.

Good reporting would have included “head injuries” at the least.

The above quote described bruises and muscular trauma, tops. Perhaps some limited internal bleeding, but prob. not even much of that, as that would qualify for explicit comment, too.

If he’s getting (or needs) serious surgery, then that would be worthy of mention, too, ya think?

    SMH. Horrible journalism, at best.

    😀

  10. Brain surgery for hammer injury is not small potatos.
But I guess that’s what you risk if you insist on living in a rotten, decaying city. Though the Pelosi manse had walls and a security system. Guards? Yes/No?

I had another brain CT today, stable. Neurologically I’m doing OK except for some recent memory loss, which will be unretrievable.
Thanks to all who expressed their kind concern. It appears no surgery will be needed, though I have yet to receive the official judgment.

  11. Comments about no security are very valid. I think I read there is home security system but it may not have been turned on. Do they live in a gated community? If there was no other security, wonder why not. They are certainly wealthy enough to employ several full time security people.

However when Nancy is not home the taxpayers should not be paying for home security.

  12. We all know it was caused by the Right Wing Climate of Hate. They’ve been saying that since 1963, to my knowledge.

  13. Crazy doesn’t mean unknown to the Pelosis, however.

As for security, the most common way it is overcome is from the inside, i.e., he was invited in.

How quick this goes away will be interesting.

Any PR comment of ‘Please, respect our privacy’ will be interesting.

  14. What they are saying –
    1) Apparently the hammer belongs to Paul Pelosi. The mad man took it away from Paul Pelosi.
    2) Apparently the mad man was in hhis underwear.

My guess … Paul Pelosi is either gay or bi and had the mad man over for sex. And something went wrong.

    Watch and wait.

  15. Thanks for the update, Cicero. Sounds like a good prognosis.

I don’t know what Paul Pelosi’s physical fitness is like. At 82, I was still pumping fairly serious iron. An 82year old man can have pretty strong bones if he eats right and lifts weights. The pictures I have seen of him show a tall man who doesn’t seem at all overweight or frail. Getting hit with a hammer can fracture skulls and create bad bruisiung even for a man that’s very fit. I don’t like his or Nancy’s politics, but I wouldn’t wish an assault like this on anyone. I wish him a full recovery.

If I had their money and lived in a crime ridden city like San Francisco, I would have some pretty serious security. Did they have sensors, alarms, cameras, motion sensing lights, monitoring by a security company, etc. If not, I am pretty amazed. High net worth figures who are high profile, like the Pelosis are obvious targets for crooks/kidnappers.

IMO, this is a terrible development for the GOP. The narrative is going to be that this guy is a typical crazy Trump supporter and the MSM will trumpet it and ignore anything else. At least that’s what I expect.

  16. “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away”

That smashed patio door kind of implies that the attack took place in the lag time between alarm and arrival.

I notice that the home is right on the street, practically. Nevertheless, I’m surprised that the Pelosi’s, with their kind of net worth and recognized brand, don’t have at least a couple of men stationed 24/7 with that kind of exposure, in that kind of setting.

    “White Supremacist Terrorist” in 3…2…1..

  17. Aggie:

I read somewhere that the man’s hammer attack on Pelosi occurred after the police had arrived, with the police watching. It was sudden, and they broke it up and arrested the guy.

    Very strange.

  18. Good news, Cicero. Blessings.

According to several reports, there is heavy security when Nancy is at home, and less when she’s not. It sounds to me like the security system was on, the guy broke in, and police responded fairly promptly to stop the battle in progress. Or one of the odd situations from other comments here might be true, but we lack information.

  19. >Apparently the mad man was in hhis underwear.
He’s a nudist, but dressed up for the occasion.

  20. Yes harmeet dhillon one of the sharper figures andrew ngos lawyer mentioned as part of trumps defense team

  21. That’s more confirmation the guy was known by Paul.

Another version of the theory that Paul Pelosi allowed the perp inside the home is that Paul was waiting for a drug delivery (the finest California weed), and either 1) Depape was the delivery guy; or 2) Paul mistook Depape for the delivery guy and realized his error only after Depape was inside the house.

  22. JJ: “IMO, this is a terrible development for the GOP. The narrative is going to be that this guy is a typical crazy Trump supporter and the MSM will trumpet it and ignore anything else. At least that’s what I expect.”

You expect right. I came here from reading a few news stories about the incident and the Dems are bearing down hard on that. As expected.

  23. Neo,

Paul Pelosi is apparently passionate about exploring all of the different ways of getting hammered.

I’ve read that after bracing the intruder / visitor, he excused himself saying that he needed the bathroom, where he made a surreptitious 911 call and left it on, causing the police to respond fairly quickly (especially once they saw the Caller ID, I presume). FBI have already raided the perp’s home, which is apparently some kind of funky Victorian hippy-collective time capsule in the Castro district.

  24. The Democrats and the media (sorry for the repetition) will try to play this up, but the facts aren’t going to support this being a crazy GOPer. It sounds like to me that this guy was invited in at some point- may have been escorted in by Pelosi himself earlier in the evening, and then something went wrong enough that Pelosi called the police.

  25. Brandon as always chimes in with his typical dyspeptic-old-coot vitriol: JoJo ” . . . on Friday night denounced the hammer attack against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband as ‘political violence’ and linked the shocking crime to the Capitol riot. Speaking at a fundraiser for the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, Biden alleged that Paul Pelosi’s attacker was using the ‘same chant’ that rioters at the US Capitol used on Jan. 6, 2021. . . . The president then angrily suggested the attack was an act of political violence, blaming Republicans for inciting individuals who are mentally ill.”

    https://nypost.com/2022/10/28/biden-slams-political-violence-attack-against-paul-pelosi/

Brandon, of course, should talk about “inciting individuals who are mentally ill.”

  26. October surprise, anyone?

Biden, according to one report, helped arrange transportation for Nancy. Whoa, does that mean a military flight?

  27. Cicero: Thanks for the update. Glad to hear what sounds like (mostly) good news.

Regarding the break-in at the Pelosi’s house: Photo shows glass on the outside, implying that it was hit from the inside. And the door that is open is NOT the one with the broken glass. This all implies that the broken glass was not part of the break-in.

The whole story sounds fishy. A guy walking around a wealthy part of San Francisco at 2:00 AM dressed only in his underwear and carrying a hammer? Or did Pelosi bring the hammer to the party and smash the glass to make it look like a break-in? Which would suggest the door was open, or at least unlocked. And the guy’s clothes were piled somewhere inside. There are a few flags here, but I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for more elucidation.

  28. Do we know if the police heard the perp shouting “Where’s Nancy?” or is that what Paul Pelosi says he said?

  29. As for security, the most common way it is overcome is from the inside, i.e., he was invited in.

Someone took the trouble to smash a back window and reach in and around to open the door.

Grindr date gone bad is my guess.

Pelosi is 82 years old and has fathered five children.

  30. If I had their money and lived in a crime ridden city like San Francisco, I would have some pretty serious security.

I’m going to put money on the proposition that if you had their money, your wife wouldn’t be living on the opposite coast working to accomplish nefarious ends, especially at the age of 82. These people are bent in ways normal people cannot imagine.

  31. However when Nancy is not home the taxpayers should not be paying for home security.

Richard Nixon and his wife shlepped around without any security from 1986 until their deaths in 1993/4. Jackie Onassis from 1975 until her death in 1994 had no more elaborate security than the doorman of her building. Bess Truman had a detail. It consisted of one guy in a parked car outside her house.

  32. RAB4, Nancy already has a Military Jet to fly around on, fully stocked with food and liquor.

  33. I met Harmeet Dhillon many years ago — what a very sharp mind. She was running for office in Marin County, and it was highly unlikely that she would succeed, which was a shame. She had real vision. But Marin is blue, blue, blue. So sad.

The house had laminated glazing. I saw a photo.

Garden variety laminated glazing is a bit of a challenge to get through, but it can be gotten through. Attack-resistant is a lot more difficult — it depends on the level of resistance how difficult. I am pretty sure it is more difficult than wind-borne debris impact glazing, which pretty much takes a pole traveling at a good speed. (Or a couple of people lobbing a manhole cover, which is what happened in the Charleston Riot). It is not designed to NEVER break — just to slow things down, and to keep shards of glass from getting everywhere.

My guess is that they may have had at a minimum, wind-borne debris impact glazing. They live within one mile of the coast.

  34. Art Deco,

The world has lots of children fathered by gay guys and bisexuals. It isn’t uncommon. The broken glass looks staged to me- far too much of it, like almost all of it, is on the outside, not inside.

If the perp had been clothed, I would probably believe the story being told. I find it weird how the media, right from the start focused on the nudist history of this guy. This is a tell of someone trying to force a narrative to explain away a difficult detail- how this guy got to the house in only his underwear.

  35. It isn’t uncommon.

    It’s uncommon.

If the perp had been clothed, I would probably believe the story being told.

I think I’d suspend judgment on the latest reports on granular details.

  36. Grindr date gone bad is my guess.

Pelosi is 82 years old and has fathered five children.

So was Malcolm Forbes. I also wonder about the woman in the car with Paul when he had his DUI. The Democrats who run SF will see that the proper story is released.

  37. From Neo’s Foxnews link.

Scott said during a Friday night press conference that both Paul Pelosi and DePape both had their hands on the hammer. When officers gave an order for the men to drop the hammer, DePape began attacking Paul Pelosi, who was hit at least one time.

Not good performance from the cops. The correct response of Pelosi would have been to shout to the cops, “Get your asses over here, and then I’ll let go.” Understandably, Pelosi may not have been thinking that carefully.

  38. Biden comments are reprehensible. On the Biden scale, not that bad. On anyone else’s scale, outrageous.

  39. I have no problem believing some random guy could be walking around SF at 2 AM in his underwear. I also have no problem believing Pelosi got a hammer to try to defend himself, and somehow summoned police. It is even possible that Pelosi is a bit cognitively challenged himself; it wouldn’t be unusual at that age.

I am puzzled, however, by the relative lack of security. I doubt we’ll ever know the true story, but I don’t feel the need to posit a gay liaison gone bad.

  40. Aggie said, “FBI have already raided the perp’s home, which is apparently some kind of funky Victorian hippy-collective time capsule in the Castro district.”

Those who know David DePape, 42, told The Post they’ve seen him living in a yellow school bus parked in front of the Berkeley home of his ex, San Francisco pro-nudist activist Gypsy Taub, with whom he shares three children. . . . [Neighbor Ryan] La Coste said he “wasn’t surprised at all” when he learned his former neighbor was involved in the brazen attack on Pelosi. “I wasn’t surprised because another crazy story is coming from someone in that house,” La Coste said. “They are always toxic and always up to something. They are always on the news and trying to be ‘activists.’ They always want to be in the spotlight.”

Photo of the school bus (with “You Are Beautiful” as its route sign) at the link:
    https://nypost.com/2022/10/29/paul-pelosi-attacker-david-depape-lived-in-a-school-bus/

Make of the following what you will: DePape’s stepdaughter claims that he sexually abused her and her siblings: https://nypost.com/2022/10/29/paul-pelosi-attacker-david-depape-sexually-abused-his-kids-stepdaughter/

You’d think an undocumented Canadian migrant would get some credit for adding to the cultural diversity of San Francisco.

  41. Not that uncommon, Deco.

    Yes, uncommon.

The late Robert Reed sired one child. His wife abandoned him < 2 years later and he never remarried in the succeeding 34 years. (He did enough cruising on the QT after 1977 to get himself infected with HIV, though what killed him was colon cancer).

    That's not Pelosi's situation.

    So was Malcolm Forbes

I don’t take Michelangelo Signorile seriously.

  42. So now the cops are saying that when they arrived, some “unknown person” opened the door to let them in.*

There is also the story saying that two fake websites were created to point to the perp being right-wing and then, next day, those websites just disappeared. **

    * See https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2022/10/29/unknown-person-let-police-officers-into-paul-pelosis-home-on-night-of-attack/

    ** See https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2022/10/exclusive-two-far-right-websites-attributed-david-depape-fabricated-created-friday-deleted-today/

  43. Uncommon?

    Compared to what?

Everyone knows that gays and bisexuals are less common that straights. So, children sired by gays and bisexuals will almost certainly be less common than those sired by straights.

But if one is simply pointing out, as I believe Yancey Ward did, that there are a lot more children of gays and bisexuals than one might immediately assume, it’s an understandable claim.

Fortunately, we have Pope Deco available, not to explain, but simply to decree the Truth.

  46. I have no idea how valid it is — I really don’t care enough to bother investigating — but there is a meme floating around that says that Pelosi is gay, is well known for cruising gay bars in SF, and neighbors have seen the perp coming and going from the Pelosi residence more than once — meaning that the attack was more a domestic violence/elder abuse case than an assault by a stranger — which explains the attacker being in underwear.

I repeat: Not verified. Feel free to reject it for cause.

Also: No, the fact that they have been married for a long time and have kids does not mean much. There’s a reason for the term “beard”. AND it would explain why they don’t seem to spend any time together.

  47. No, the fact that they have been married for a long time and have kids does not mean much.

What people deem plausible always surprises. Have another toke Mr. ObloodyHell. You won’t get appreciably dumber.

  48. Art Deco:

What you are ignoring about Paul Pelosi is his age and the possibility of dementia. Dementia, even of a relatively mild type, can cause sexual acting out of previously absent impulses. I have zero idea whether this is the case for Paul Pelosi, but it’s certainly not all that far-fetched.

Please quit the gratuitous personal insults towards other commenters, especially when they have not insulted you.

  49. Neo:

Thank you for the admonition regarding personal insults. They really detract. from the blog, and are pretty pointless.

  50. Not dispositive, but: I knew of several cases of husbands and fathers who came out as gay or bisexual after many decades of marriage and fatherhood–in one case, over five decades. Two of them involved WWII combat veterans. And that was just in my fairly small social and professional circle.

Among famous people, John Cheever was an especially well-known case.

Neo: seconding F’s thanks for the admonition.

  51. Being married and having kids hardly means Paul isn’t also into gay sex. Particularly for his generation, where hiding gay behavior was common.

  52. On this subject, all of you seem to conflate the possible with the probable. That you can find a historical example of someone doing something very odd is not cause for assuming that this is the case here on almost zero evidence; it is not cause in any circumstance. Mr. ObloodyHell fancies that 60 years of marriage and five children is not indicative of Mr. Pelosi’s basic dispositions (but a very garbled and protean account of a burglary at his home is). My suggestion would be you all wait for some verifiable granular details to emerge and suspend judgment in the interim.

  53. “Art Deco on October 29, 2022 at 8:20 am said:

Someone took the trouble to smash a back window and reach in and around to open the door.”

Not only that, it looks like they took the trouble to smash it from the inside.

  54. Not only that, it looks like they took the trouble to smash it from the inside.

No, it doesn’t look like that, but people keep saying that. If you look at the photo provided in the British media, you’ll see what appears to be paint dust outside the window, not glass shards. What’s on the inside is not known. Whether the dust was there before he entered the house is not known. What’s been cleaned up since the incident is not known. That is not a police photograph or you’d see a numbered marker there.

  55. “That you can find a historical example of someone doing something very odd . . . ”

Not sure why that would be odd for a gay man of Paul’s vintage.

  56. Art Deco:

It is you who seem to be confused.

How is it you translate that statement of OBloody’s from an assertion that this is “possible” to an assertion that it is “probable”? I don’t see “probable” at all there. You also write “all of you seem to conflate the possible with the probable.” Who is it here that you see saying this is probable?

  57. “No, it doesn’t look like that, but people keep saying that. If you look at the photo provided in the British media, you’ll see what appears to be paint dust outside the window, not glass shards. ”

The Daily Mail picture I saw is the same as the others, it looks like glass to me. The caption indicates that it shows broken glass.

It seems to me “people keep saying that” because that’s what it looks like.

  58. Neo,

I suspect there is both body cam video and surveillance video which could be released and clear things up. We haven’t seen it yet, and the official statements haven’t led to clarity. Combine that with the current lack of trust for media and government (and well earned at that).

Has someone stolen Art Deco’s nym? I don’t recall him being this dumb.

“Knowing of” does not mean “active acquaintance”.

Moreover, from what they are saying these days, LGQBTXYPRZs are everywhere…. so everyone knows dozens.

No, not buying it either. But that’s the left’s claim, and why they justify every other actor on TV playing an LGblahblahblah character.

But, offhand, it’s not hard to know 4, either — there are four of them who commonly play in my board game group of about 30-40. Is that “actively acquainted”? I assume it is. I don’t associate with them outside of playing tabletop games, so I suppose they aren’t “friends”… but we’re certainly “acquainted”.

I recall one time where we all wound up playing the same 5-player game and everyone else in the group left earlier — as we left the public venue we were playing at, I joked about how I was the only straight person of the five guys.

It was an unusual experience and amused me. At one time or another I’ve had a number of gay friends, though it was obviously because we had some thing in common other than sexuality. Probably because I’ve always been apathetic towards other peoples’ sexual orientation. Really don’t give a shit.

I am pissed these days with the bad behavior of a too-large percentage of militant ones, but it’s not their private proclivities which offend me, even as a Christian.

  61. }}} Mr. ObloodyHell fancies that 60 years of marriage and five children is not indicative of Mr. Pelosi’s basic dispositions (but a very garbled and protean account of a burglary at his home is).

Not the least. As Neo notes, I consider it possible and even reasonable. It IS San Francisco, and there’s been a major gay presence there for at least 50-odd years. It WOULD fit the visible data. And for PP to turn out to be gay after DECADES of not obviously being such is not at all preposterous, or even unlikely. There is a reason there is a term “Beard”, and a reason it’s entered the popular lexicon, even outside the gay community, such that many non-gays know of it. The need/desire to hide one’s sexual orientation is still common even now, and it was downright prevalent anytime over about 2 decades ago in most places. And is still prevalent in many places.

For some, it’s not even that they don’t feel they COULD come out safely, but they know there CAN be issues and they prefer the controllable issues with remaining in the closet over the uncontrollable issues of someone they may not have even met until decades or more away from now taking issue with it in a way that would matter to them. Yes, that’s strong risk-aversion, but, FFS, we just proved we have an entire generation and more of people who are absolute shit at making risk assessments.

  62. I consider it possible and even reasonable.

The last word indicates the flaw in your thinking.

“Knowing of” does not mean “active acquaintance”.

Evidently the meaning of the phrase “And that was just in my fairly small social and professional circle.” Went right over your head.

  63. “Evidently the meaning of the phrase “And that was just in my fairly small social and professional circle.” Went right over your head.”

Looks like a clarification is needed. Right, here goes. In some of the cases I alluded to, I knew the couple personally. In others, I knew close relatives of the couple and learned about the case indirectly through my acquaintances. Still others were common knowledge at the universities where I worked.

My point was a fairly simple one: that cases like this may not be as uncommon as Deco thinks they are. Not saying that PP is one of these cases, but the fact that he has been married for decades and fathered children does not by itself eliminate the possibility. Most grownups learn this fact of life through experience.

Now for this Decoism: “If you’re actively acquainted with four homosexual men, you’re over the mean.”

Gosh, could be. Let’s see: couple of good friends from grad school and previous jobs, plus a few valued colleagues in my current profession. Yup, over the mean. Just like OBH and (I suspect) several other commenters on this blog. Perhaps even Deco himself. And?

I haven’t been able to find it online, but the late Russell Baker had a great column in the NYT around the time of the Anita Bryant brouhaha in the 1970s. In it, he disclosed that one of his most cherished teachers was gay. Presumably Baker was “over the mean” too. Might have to re-examine that mean.

BTW: a gay colleague in a previous job was one of the most courageous people I have had the privilege to know. He stuck his neck out on a matter of principle when he didn’t have to and at considerable personal and professional risk to himself. Another WWII vet, by the way (Navy). He died in 1999. We could use more people like him today.

Finally, OBH: “At one time or another I’ve had a number of gay friends, though it was obviously because we had some thing in common other than sexuality. Probably because I’ve always been apathetic towards other peoples’ sexual orientation. Really don’t give a shit.”

    Ditto. Over and out.
