Watch out for Captain Hook — 25 Comments

  1. It seems like a lot of huge, oestensibly for-profit companies are being operated primarily as high profile social advocacy organizations. It’s as if making money is a tertiary concern at most.

Disney shares have dropped by 15% since the start of 2022. People appear to be unsubscribing to Disney Plus in droves, and while some of that no doubt can be chalked up to inflation leading to household cost cutting, a fair amount has to also be attributed to customer unhappieness with Disney’s “woke” advocacy. Yet if anything they appear to be doubling down on the very nonsense that is driving customers away. It makes you wonder how long it can go on. Do the shareholders care that they’re losing money?

  2. Nonapod,

They also just hired a new PR person whose resume is working in the Obama and Biden administrations, and a life long leftist. Some encouraging signs is that many of the comments on the Disney blogs were of the theme: “And how will this help?? Just continue to alienate 50% of the audience.”

  3. It is the whole “Wicked” discussion. That the Wicked Witch of the West got her moniker because she and her sister terrorized the munchkins needs to be understood in the context of her ostracism for being green skinned. So what if they also shrunk a man’s heart and turned him into a tin man. Let’s just forget all the others that didn’t use the excuse of ostracism or the color of their skin to become villains.

  4. The Florida senate just revoked Disney’s special rights for Disney World’s zoning. Disney sure seems to be making a lot of enemies lately.

One question I have about the removal of Disney Word’s “special rights”, could Desantis now send in an army of inspectors to check if everything there is up to code? Or would they be “grandfathered in” or whatever?

  5. Nonapod, once this passes the Florida House and is signed by the governor, I suppose Disney will be subject to all state and county authorities. I haven’t seen any detailed practical analysis on what will happen to a property that spans two counties.

  6. Cyril is very good. I thought the Spielberg movie version (Hook 1991) with Dustin Hoffmann was quite poor. I’m usually a fan of Hoffmann, but not as Hook. I didn’t like the production either.

I just finished watching Leave Her to Heaven (1945) for the second time during the movie nights we have when a certain friend is in town. My, what a dark and nasty film. I finally got all the plot details, in spite of old ears, mediocre film copy, and no captions. I’m not aware of the woke crowd trying to cancel the film noire genre, in spite of portraying some women characters in a bad light.

What does the title mean, I puzzled? It’s from Hamlet.

    Leave her to heaven
And to those thorns that in her bosom lodge,
    To prick and sting her.

  7. Kate, and Nonapod,

Kate has the right of it, it would be mainly Orange county with authority. Basically WDW would have to go through same process as Universal and Sea World currently do.

Stock price closed at about 131 yesterday and opened at 126 today and has been stable, but this news may not have affected it yet.

  8. Cyril Ritchard directed and acted in a short-lived musical The Happiest Girl in the World (1961), based on the Lysistrata legend and with music by Offenbach. I happened to see it, and got his autograph on my Playbill.

  9. …that could be considered by some to be discriminatory.

I love the turn of phrase “could be considered by some to be” (insert crime against wokeness here).

Of course expecting the wokestapo to be honest and just own it is a bridge way to far. They’ll never be honest enough to simply say, “I consider” as in “…[T]hey reportedly fretted over Captain Hook because [he] has a disability but likes to do villainous things, something I consider discriminatory.”

Or, “…something my deranged, woke friends and I consider discriminatory.

Or, “…something the other unhinged leftists in the newsroom and I consider discriminatory.

No, they’ll just trudge right along passing themselves off as if we haven’t broken the code and know exactly who those mysterious “some” people are; the author and other people living in their own bubble. Nobody else.

Now, let’s talk about “anonymous sources say”…

  10. hey steve, how have you been, (this is narciso) yes they are just beyond parody at this point,

  11. I will admit for the last couple of years, I have become attracted to news about Disney. Here you have a company with a remarkable brand name appeal and lucrative IP, such as Snow White, Star Wars, Marvel, Peter Pan, and ESPN. And in about 5 year’s time, they have destroyed their own IP in very imaginative ways and soiled their brand name in a manner that a competitor like Universal could ever hope to do them. It is a corporate version of a train wreck. Could any of you have imagined destroying Peter Pan like this?

  12. The whole “villains are bad because others made them that way” thing is not just changing the way stories are told. Such thinking is changing the way some people see the world – and not in a good way.

I remember the remake of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas with Jim Carey (released 22 years ago – OMG! do I feel old) – overall I thought it was well done except for the fact that they added to the original story by suggesting that the Grinch was the way he was because of earlier teasing by the Whos when he was young. At the time I thought is was just a rather lame twist on the original story line.

There may have been earlier stories re-made to include such thinking; but, that was the first I remember seeing. What I didn’t see coming that such “indoctrination” has its consequences. I think many of those who are trying to excuse Putin’s invasion of Ukraine because “NATO has pushed itself east” is a good example. They cannot believe that Putin is just a power hungry madman who wants to bring back the Soviet/Russian Empire. No, they believe it has to be because someone treated him poorly.

Or like some people who say “well, maybe if we just sit down and talk with (insert whatever evil there is such as the Iranian Mullahs, Palestinian terrorists, etc.) we can achieve peace.” Such naive thinking – perhaps inspired by “villains are bad because others made them that way” – can have deadly consequences.

They cannot see that evil is just that – evil. And there is no reason to try to excuse it.

  13. I used to gleefully sing a personal version of this song to my children when denying them something they wanted, or assigning a chore:

“Who’s the meanest Dad in the world?
    Your Dad,
    Your Dad!
Who’s the meanest Dad in the world?
    Your Dad,
    That’s me-e-e-e-e-e!”

Of course, just as Cook does I’d substitute additional superlatives like, “evilest,” “cruelist…” going on until they demanded I stop.

  14. A few more Disney movies with ‘problematic’ elements.

Snow White: obviously discriminatory toward those vertically challenged. Dwarfs? At the least some names will have to be changed; Dopey and Grumpy for sure. Nor are Sleepy and Sneezy positive role models.

    Cinderella: white privilege writ large.

Sleeping Beauty: misogynistic… only a man can awaken beauty

  15. Nonapod,

“Yet if anything they appear to be doubling down on the very nonsense that is driving customers away. It makes you wonder how long it can go on. Do the shareholders care that they’re losing money?”

They now serve a higher purpose. No doubt Congressional Democrats will be offering a new bill to provide increased tax breaks for those who invest in the right companies. It’s only fair.

  16. Geoffrey Britain,

I don’t know if you were joking, but all three of those stories have come under attack for the precise reasons you cite.

  17. Hey, miguel, feeling pretty good. And you?

Yes, the woke left is beyond parody. Related to the transgroomingpalooza festival we find going on in public schools:

    https://townhall.com/tipsheet/madelineleesman/2022/04/20/womens-rights-activist-slams-nj-prison-for-housing-biological-male-transgender-n2606104

49 states now have policies that “trans women” must be housed in women’s prison. And they have to insist that, “Trans women ARE women.” So Edna Mahan Correctional Facility, New Jersey’s only all women’s prison, has 2 pregnant prisoners now. Because they have 27 trans women prisoners. And one, Demetrius “Demi” Minor has admitted to getting them both pregnant.

So what are authorities going to do? Admit trans women aren’t actually women? Especially “women” like UPenn swimmer “Lia” Thomas who likes to parade around the locker room in the nude showing off “her” twig and berries. Or will they be forced to further disbelieve their lying eyes and declare that, who knew? We have now discovered that some women can get other women pregnant. My guess is on the latter choice.

Swear on the Bible, if I were an alien from another planet on a voyage to the earth and I was told much of the population of the earth was capable of being this stupid I wouldn’t believe it. Until I saw it for myself. Now I’m seeing for myself.

We are literally too stupid to live.

But it’s a race to the bottom between the woke left in general and the Biden administration in particular. The Biden WH is desperately trying to shore up Biden’s disastrous poll numbers or he’ll be a anchor dragging down the Democrats in the midterms. So what do they decide to do? Fight the recent court decision and reinstate the CDC’s travel mask mandate.

We see cell phone videos cheering passengers gleefully ripping off their masks mid-flight as the happy cabin crew members happily announce the end of the mandate.

And bizarrely somebody in the Biden administration thinks ending that happiness and forcing Americans back into masks will help the Democrats in the mid-terms? Apparently so.

We need a new word to describe a form of parody that is unimaginably more extreme than the most lunatic form of parody ever conceived. Because whatever that word turns out to be, the left is beyond that.
