  1. Stock markets are down hard because … A new covid variant from South (or southern?) Africa called B.1.1.529. It’s been detected a number of times, but the contact in the news is a person flying from Malawi(?) to Israel. Those damn Israeli’s are too thorough. (joke)

The World Health Organization will hold an emergency meeting Friday following the discovery of the variant, known as B.1.1.529, in a traveler visiting Israel from South Africa earlier this week. It has also been identified in Hong Kong, according to U.K. health officials.

“WHO is closely monitoring the recently reported variant B.1.1.529. So far under 100 sequences have been reported,” the agency said in a statement. “Early analysis shows that this variant has a large number of mutations that require and will undergo further study.”

The variant carries a spike protein — the basis for infection — that is vastly different to that which current vaccines are designed to neutralize, health authorities have said, and is mutating fast. Britain has restricted travel from South Africa, and several neighboring countries as a result, with the European Union following shortly after.

  2. LeClerc nice read, why would I think it’s a modern Emperor’s New Clothes ?
No one wants to be the one who says it’s garbage.

  3. TommyJay,

Just Tuesday I said that no variants on the horizon, little did I know.

The usual panic porn seems to be happening with terms like “horrific”. Seems to be much more contagious and of course Vax resistant, but no word on virulence. Historically, viruses mutate to more contagious less lethal forms due to Darwinian pressure.

Of course the timing is quite amazing just as the delta disappears and the administration’s mandate is on the ropes. Poor Kurt Schlichter keeps having his fiction come true. Maybe this one will be Covid 21.

  4. LeClerc —

That was a good interview with Loury. It’s a good podcast to follow in general.

  5. physicsguy —

Yeah, I saw an alert email from the Seattle Times and thought, “oh, look, right on time.” :-\

Reportedly, the vax resistance is because the spike protein is almost completely different than the one the vax is programmed for, so it’s more “vax-avoidant” than resistant.

  6. ” so it’s more “vax-avoidant” than resistant”

Which is exactly what one would expect in evolution when the “vax” is so tied to a specific part, ie the spike rather than the whole virus.

I’m awaiting word on the 3 people quarantined in Israel. How sick are they? That’s the big question. If sniffles and a mild fever and then they’re better, then who cares if it’s more contagious?

  7. The new variant has a new name.

    Omicron.

I can’t believe they haven’t found a new variant sooner. The flight restrictions are already starting.

Was talking to someone this morning who said they had very little fear of a new variant but immense fear of the government reactions to it.

  8. Bryan Lovely,
If “ the spike protein is almost completely different than the one the vaccine is programed for,” then does this suggest that “ natural immunity” MAY be better for this variant than the current vaccines?

  9. “Omicron” …because the “ African Variant” would be “ racism”….
As a black supremest told me, white sins create diseases. There were no diseases in the Americas before whites came…lol

  10. physicsguy and jon baker,

Agreed physicsguy. The original SARS-CoV-2 virus had S, M, and E proteins exposed to the exterior of its shell. S, the spike, is of course the most active and important but natural immunity should respond to all of the proteins unlike the vaccinated immunity. The next technical question would be: How mutated are the M and E proteins in the new B.1.1.529 variant?

I’d guess that natural immunity would have better odds of protecting well, or semi-well, compared to vax immunity; but as usual we are at the mercy of those who can or will know the answers to those types of questions.

  11. I predict most of Europe will be in lockdown by Monday. They have been itching to do it the last couple of weeks and this will be the excuse.

The response of governments to this continues to be the biggest story of maybe the last 75 years. It ebbs and flows but it is always there.

    Crimes against humanity.

  12. In the Greek alphabet, the letter ‘ni’ – ? – signifies for the WHO the latest Covid variant, until now. The next letter is ‘ksi’ – ?, which the wise solons appear determined to ignore, to adopt yet the next letter ‘omikron’ – ? for the Newest Baddest Variant. Does their selection exhibit their alphabetical ignorance? Or are they desperate to avoid any citizen of the world mistaking ‘xi’ – ? – seven letters past omikron – for that slighted ‘ksi’, and possibly igniting the rage of Comrade Xi in Beijing?

Hmm, apologies for the question marks, those were written as the actual Greek letters, but some software liketh them not.

  13. I listened to that Loury interview that LeClerc mentioned. I would have liked to hear a bit more about his early life on the South Side. Also that comment from his uncle toward the end, about his home community not “seeing themselves” in what he did as an economist, was interesting and would have been worth several minutes more exploration than they could give it.

  14. As a crisis develops in Ethiopia, the State Dept. worries about…

“The chaos that unfolded as Afghanistan fell to the Taliban and the struggle the U.S. faced when attempting to withdraw Americans and allies from the country reportedly caused a wave of mental health issues in the State Department, Politico reported.

The Department of Veterans Affairs reportedly offered its 24-7 support line to help officials work through the strain of the situation, but the State Department turned down the offer, Politico reported. One State Department employee described this decision as “really disturbing” and “a disgrace.”

“The mental health ramifications of the Afghanistan evacuation are not over — we expect employees to potentially have adverse mental health in the months and years to come,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said while commenting on the reporting, Politico reported.”

  15. “…Candace Kneecaps Caucasians”

A knee-capping of a different kind was delivered to an exceedingly vulnerable Caucasian America by influencer Candace Owens. To wit, Darrell Brooks is the black supremacist, who used his vehicle to mow down and murder white grannies and grandkids parading in Waukesha, Wisconsin. But if you had dared to consider the race of Brooks in a hate crime manifestly motivated by race—you were boorishly berated by Owens as “brainwashed”:

“Darrell Brooks is a scumbag murderer — his race is irrelevant…. Disagree? You’re brainwashed!”

America is now systemically and institutionally anti-white. Black-on-white hate crime is rife, but it’s invariably not reported, underreported, or if reported, masked as something other than what it really is, precisely as Owens has done—and now orders you to do. Ignore her ilk—Republicans who’re always boasting about their color-blindness and their blindness to white suffering. Your life and the lives of those you love, very plainly, depend on it.
