  1. Lovely pic, thanks. I am trying to decipher the white mass in the upper left. It might be a late-season snow bank but I am inclined to think it is white water: quite a torrent, in fact, and strangely adjacent to the very calm water in the foreground.

  2. AppleBetty:

Glad to see a Zappa fan here.

The Firesign Theatre were not to be outdone. From “Everything You Know Is Wrong.”

My daddy said, “Son, it’s in the water. That’s why it’s yellow.”

  3. Imbibing colleague to Zaphod clutching a restorative bottle of Vittel mineral water at 3am outside a bar in Wanchai: “Don’t drink that @#$%! Fish (alliterate) in it!”

  4. Zaphod may remember that the biggest brand of bottled water in Indonesia was “Golden Mississippi” — unless their name change to AQUA was before his time.

  5. What are we looking at in the water?

Sunrise, sunset, minerals, algae, pollution, Photoshop manipulation?

  6. Yellow leaves on a tree, is my guess. There is some vertical striping to the yellow which could be individual trees .

  7. I also think TommyJay is right, because reflections of trees in their autumn colors on the surface of the water would explain the patches of red in the lower third of the photo.

  8. Just as the xi-den administration commits impeachable offence of open borders policy contrary to the law, the corrupt DOJ is refusing to protect the opposition from physical assault and assassination.

That’s my conclusion as two credible death threats against Matt Gaetz, Rep. of Florida. https://www.zerohedge.com/political/man-arrested-threatening-kill-matt-gaetz-worked-cnn-abc-nbc

I’m almost stunned. But. I’m too numb for that now. There is no low the far Left won’t embrace as long as it serves their will to power by any means. Including getting a stalwart opponent murdered.

  9. Xi-den and Democrats goal of socialist transformation is about to get seriously challenged by the reality of ongoing economic events. It seems that macroeconomic prognostications of a “US recession already”* by the former Bank of England economist David Blanchflower, now at Dartmouth College, are bearing out (https://nypost.com/2021/10/18/us-has-dipped-into-recession-as-worried-consumers-flash-warning-signs-economists/), as the respected Atlanta Fed GDP forecast expects Third Quarter GDP to be about Zero, ie, threatening US recession.

Here a summary pull quote, after noting that consensus expected above 3%.

“…at a time when the Wall Street banks are scratching their heads for credible explanations why they are keeping (or raising) their year-end S&P targets [optimistically] at a time when economic growth is in freefall and inflation is soaring (read: stagflation), an unexpected source of honesty has emerged – the Atlanta Fed, which now sees the US on the verge of contraction. [That is, recession.]

“In its latest GDPNow forecast published moments ago, the Atlanta Fed slashed its estimate for real GDP growth in the third quarter of 2021 to just 0.2%, down from 1.2% on October 15, from 6% about two months ago, and down from 14% back in May.”

This chart explains the evolution of the near-term economic forecasts under Biden leadership, trending towards an economic collapse that’s ruionous for everyone: https://cms.zerohedge.com/s3/files/inline-images/2021-10-27_8-37-43.jpg?itok=fWRLFZ_P

    DISCUSSION

My, how high the mighty are poised to fall! So soon!

    ==========
*“We are entering a recession — we are on the precipice of a recession,” one of the study’s authors, David Blanchflower, told The Post. “It’s always good to have an early warning.”

Even as vaccination rates rise and COVID deaths fall across most of the US, sentiment among consumers and workers has soured considerably as the year draws to a close, the economists say — contrasting sharply with the happy talk coming out of the White House that things are getting better.

Sentiment has deteriorated so rapidly, in fact, that two widely respected indicators of consumer feelings now are flashing red — indicating the US economy has already dipped into negative territory, the economists warn. The same indicators were flashing red ahead of the 2008 global financial crisis.

  10. Owen:

White water. It’s a river with calm pools caused by rocks and also lots of eddies caused by rocks.

  11. TJ, the administration will claim the fall in demand from a recession “fixed” the supply chain problem!

  12. “My, how high the mighty are poised to fall! So soon!”

I suspect that this is precisely what “Biden” wants.
    (Yippee! Another crisis!!!)

You see, to truly fundamentally transform America in a convincing manner, you have to bankrupt it; create economic fear, panic, dislocation. Destroy the middle class—but most importantly their hopes for the future (any hope at all for that matter)—yes, the middle class…along with everyone else…

…until they finally understand that they must FALL INTO LINE.

    I know it’s counter-intuitive. I know it’s beyond perverse.

But I’m just trying to explain “the ways of [the godless] to men…(with apologies…)

File under: But you can’t do that to me! I’m a loyal citizen, I’ve always paid all paid my taxes, I’m a millionaire, more than a millio—UP AGAINST THE WALL, FELLA.

  13. Water is reflective and the yellow reflective of the sun’s light . Air is present and Earth. The ancient’s Four Elements are thus rendered.

  14. Watched via Amazon Prime a rock documentary: “Grateful Dawg” about the remarkable collaboration of Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) and David Grisman (creator of Dawg music) in the later years of Garcia’s life.

I have two CDs from this collaboration. It’s acoustic, rooted in bluegrass but hippie electic. Quite precise, yet relaxing. A friend called it great whiskey sippin’ music — high praise from him.

As a child musician, Garcia started off with banjo and bluegrass music. So his work with Grisman was a return to his first love. It was also a relief from the pressures of being King of the Grateful Dead world — a bigger deal than one might expect.

  15. @bof:

Thanks. That fits. Was pretty sure it wasn’t first time the guy in question had uttered this admonition to someone.

  16. @NancyB:

Equil all the way! Ades in an emergency.

Didn’t know Aqua had been Golden Mississippi (!) so must have been before my time.

  17. Do you want to know what kind of revolver Alec Baldwin was using? From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

Investigators have recovered the firearm Baldwin discharged — an F.Lli Pietta .45 long-range colt revolver — and “the spent shell casing from the bullet that was fired from the gun,” [Sheriff Adan] Mendoza said at the news conference, adding, the “actual lead projectile that was fired has been recovered from Souza’s shoulder.”

This is entirely picayune but also a tiny example of a portion the Gell-Mann amnesia effect. That is, journalists often don’t know what they are writing about, in this case firearms.

This company, F Lli Pietta, makes many historical replica revolvers. The one in question is chambered in .45LC or .45 caliber “Long Colt.” It is a very specific cartridge type that a shooter must get correct. It is called long because the cartridge casing is longer than the previous shorter casing. That will give it a longer range when fired, but that is not what the word “long” refers to.

Here is Wikipedia on the round:

    .45 Colt
Not to be confused with .45 ACP. [Note: ACP abbreviates Automatic Colt Pistol]

The .45 Colt, also referred to as .45 Long Colt, .45 LC, or 11.43×33mmR, is a rimmed straight-walled handgun cartridge dating to 1872. It was originally a black-powder revolver round developed for the Colt Single Action Army revolver. This cartridge was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873 and served as an official US military handgun cartridge for 14 years. While it is sometimes referred to as .45 Long Colt or .45 LC, to differentiate it from the very popular .45 ACP, and historically, the shorter .45 S&W Schofield, this was originally an unofficial designation by Army quartermasters.

Got that? It wouldn’t be fun if it was easy.

  18. Anonymous/Om: thanks for the tip. Will watch. Drachinifel is always good value. Lee’s and USS Washington Capt. Glenn Davis’ sinking of IJN battleship Kirishima in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal was one of only two battleship-to-battleship duels in the Pacific (the other was Surigao Strait). Samuel Eliot Morison’s account is still my favorite.

I knew that Lee was on the USNA rifle team. I’m guessing that’s the connection with the firearms theme that has dominated here recently.

Drachinifel’s video on the USN’s superior damage control skills in WWII is especially relevant today and shows how far we have declined since then in military competence (e.g. the recent loss of USS Bonhomme Richard).

Lovely photo by Neo, by the way. Makes me kind of homesick for New England.

  19. bog and zaphod,

I must spend a lot more time in bars than you two, or I hang out with a lower class of people; I must have heard that hundreds of times.
