That’s why we’re now seeing things like WaPo “correcting” stories from March 2020 that asserted the lab-leak theory was conspiracy nonsense. They dismissed it out of hand, and now they’re backpedalling. Here’s the text of one such “correction,” appended to a story originally headlined “Tom Cotton keeps repeating a coronavirus conspiracy theory that was already debunked”:
“Earlier versions of this story and its headline inaccurately characterized comments by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) regarding the origins of the coronavirus. The term ‘debunked’ and The Post’s use of ‘conspiracy theory’ have been removed because, then as now, there was no determination about the origins of the virus.”
They “have been removed,” have they? But – as Treacher points out:
If nothing has changed, if things are the same “then as now,” why are they correcting it 15 months later? Why can’t they just admit they blew it?…
They’ll grudgingly admit they might not have been 100% accurate or honest about the most important story of our lifetime, but they won’t give those dirty Republicans the satisfaction of a clear and unequivocal retraction. And none of their colleagues will call them out on it, because they all want to work at WaPo someday.
The MSM is regularly mendacious in a way that’s sly enough that if you’re not reading carefully you might miss it. That’s the goal, of course – to make readers miss it – and it’s been remarkably successful so far. Whether readers say they trust the press or distrust it, most people still read the MSM in a less-than-critical manner and are greatly influenced by it whether they realize it or not.
Oh, and I’ll add that I don’t agree with Treacher that “now, with Trump out of office and the pandemic winding down,” the media is allowing itself to dribble out some of the truth on a few issues. I don’t think that’s the reason, because they are as devoted as ever to discrediting Trump and Republicans in preparation for 2022 and beyond.
No, if they’re admitting anything now, it’s for some other strategic reason. Perhaps the one voiced by commenter “AesopFan” here:

The forced [FOIA] production of the Fauci Emails and knowing what searchers would find there…might be what done it.
That’s the most plausible theory I’ve heard so far, and consistent with previous admissions of “error” by the left in attempts to get ahead of a potentially damaging story. But the Fauci email disclosures so far just don’t seem potentially damaging enough to justify the admission of such a huge error by the MSM on the COVID origin story. So for me, the mysteries of “why?” and “why now?” remain.
My guess is that some very big bombshell about the virus’s origins is on the horizon; big enough that it cannot be squelched by the MSM no matter how tirelessly they may try. Maybe it has to do with the Fauci emails; maybe not. But I’m guessing it will implicate several high ranking American officials.
They’re scrambling rapidly and desperately to get ahead of this bombshell so it can be downplayed as much as possible when it strikes.

Day after day I saw on this channel people complaining, people praying for information, any information, to keep their hopes alive. A hint, a suggestion, anything, is what people asked for.
Mike Lindell and I agreed a month ago that I would keep you folks In a state of informed anticipation, And as information gets released I would amplify and provide color.
So I have tried to do that, letting people know that they should not give up hope, the things were in progress, but without overstating or giving too much away. But in retrospect, looking at some of the snotty comments in the last month, I don’t know what the point is. Next time I will just save myself the heartburn, and leave everyone in the dark, and when things happen they happen.
But this time, I will with the prediction play out. In the days of early June you will have quite an important thing happen, and everyone will understand why their faith was well placed.
Simple honesty seems much easier for normal healthy people, but the MSM is not heavily populated with normal healthy types.
My best guess (with not much conviction) is that both the U.S. and China were collaborating on bioweapons. If Congress says that gain-of-function research is too dangerous or unethical to do on U.S. soil; well fine, we’ll do it in China.
I’m sure some U.S. officials can and will rationalize it with the notion that the Russians are doing it too. Sadly, the safety controls of the Russian labs are probably much better than the Chinese labs.
Don’t forget that money is fungible and the lab researcher’s job tasking can be segregated. Yes, Fauci’s or NIH’s money went to the WIV lab, but not to fund gain-of-function research; just the research that is used to support gain-of-function work. The NIH people have gone on record in the last week or so saying that they have no idea what the China funded Chinese researchers were doing at the WIV lab. Plausible deniability.
So probably there was the “clean” group of researchers receiving NIH funds, and the “dirty” group funded entirely by China military funds.
There is only one consequence proportional to treason. The mass media is composed almost entirely of traitors because they are committed to actively enabling treason.

It’s sad that “friends” has become such a much-devalued label.
