“They can’t arrest us all”: the Laguna Beach uprising — 53 Comments

  1. It’s like that single snowflake that starts the avalanche.

I note now that in this week we’ve had two women who have been the leaders in civil disobedience. It will be fascinating to see if this expands over the next week. If the movement ever makes it here to New England, then those governors geese are cooked.

  2. Here’s how the media will report this…

Trump supporters carrying Nazi symbols, and Confederate flags, and carrying evil guns, illegally invade beaches in California using racial slurs against police officers!!!!

I’m laughing, and if it weren’t true it’d be even funnier.

  3. 80 degrees and beautiful today in western WA supposed to be mid 80s all weekend there are loads of people out today. King Jay is already warning us to not disappoint him.

  4. The woman with the flag is a natural leader. It really is that simple, and such people are hard to find.

  5. Where is Montage and his magic bicycle? Is he consulting with Manju about Joe (fingers) Biden or General Michael Flynn? Crickets.

  6. om,

I think montage was on the street a block over looking at the street that runs along the beach.

  7. om,

He’s playing it safe until July when he will start questioning the lockdown but for now the beach is best enjoyed from a distance.

  8. The beach is open now, under these conditions:

The City of Laguna Beach has received Governor Newsom’s support to reopen City beaches for active recreation under a four-phased plan. Under phase one, Laguna Beach City Beaches will reopen weekdays & Saturdays starting Tuesday, May 5, 2020 from 6am – 10am for active recreation only. Adjacent City beach parks remain closed at all times. Dates of upcoming phases TBD. Phase 2: Limited beach hours on weekdays and weekends, for active use only; Phase 3: Regular beach hours on weekdays and weekends, for active use only; and Phase 4: Beaches are open during regular hours for all activities, active and non-active use.

  9. Griffin:

Montage will cower in place until he is told it is safe to cower outside.

  10. What does “for active use only” mean? A person can’t lie on her towel?

  11. ‘active use’

Maybe running or surfing only. I’m reminded of the elderly couple being hounded for sitting on beach chairs.

    Entire thing is ridiculous obviously.

‘Phase’ is the latest term from this ordeal that I am tired of.

  12. I think for the most part the people have declared the lockdown over, at least in my area. Today I saw by far the most traffic on the freeway and even had slowdowns in the familiar spots. Another sign was today was the first time in a while that the ramp meter lights were back on to regulate cars merging on to the freeway.

I’ve been a believer for awhile now that the people will decide when the lockdowns are over and I think we are in the process of that happening now.

  13. If Laguna is Leftie then those were “outside agitators” LOL
Be an American not a Democrat.
It’s a good tactic, police won’t want to enforce that dreck.

But we need places to go and it’s tough on shopkeepers to open illegally. They can lose insurance coverage, lose their business license, be boycotted by the Army of Karens as well as simple arrest.

Well, we have the beach. And spirit. That’s a start.

  14. So the Democrats are now anti beach. That’s a smart position to take.

  15. With blasio putting a stop to the first amendment, you think that the leftists would wake up to the idea that when they win, no one will protest any more…

  16. Regarding the new beach hours that Ann posted. Can someone explain to me how having limited beach hours on a limited number of beaches is better for social distancing than just going ahead and opening them all up ? Its like they are packing everybody who wants to go to the beach into a smaller dimensional and temporal space. Makes no sense at all.

  17. jon baker,

Very little of it makes sense. It’s just like grocery stores that are closing one entrance and making everybody go in and out the same door and cross each other’s paths.

I’m convinced that pretty much everybody knows these things are pure b.s. and are just virtue signaling and power grabbing.

  18. American Flags! Shouts of Freedom!
    The beach is open …
    What do we want? Freedom
When do we want it? Now

    USA USA USA

    Be an American
    Not a Democrat. — early sign (2:24)

    Thanks for great video.
    A real feel good vid.

  19. Griffin,

Supporting what you said above, in the town where I live, there has been no formal announcement from the state, but we are slowly reopening anyway.

  20. A brilliant insight from Kurt Schlichter (https://the-pipeline.org/climate-hoax-is-another-coronavirus-casualty/)

One thing the pandemic has taught us is that human nature does not cease when you throw on a white lab coat. Chinese scientists, at best, obediently covered up the disease just as their ChiCom cadres commanded. Whether this was because of Peking-tilted patriotism, or simply because they did not want their names added to an involuntary organ donor list, is irrelevant. Human beings don’t stop being human beings simply because they get a STEM degree.

  21. It was not a feel good video for me at the start.
I had a visceral reaction to seeing the police approach her and take the flag from her.
An instinct to lash out and destroy a fascist agent of oppression.
There must be something wrong with me.

  22. Neo set it up to start when she started for the beach. You should watch the entire video from the beginning.

  23. Rufus T Firefly…”Human beings don’t stop being human beings simply because they get a STEM degree.”

Indeed. Plenty of STEM degrees among German rocket scientists, and even among some working on still worse things.

And, not to leave out the artistic set, Leni Riefenstahl really was an excellent filmmaker.

  24. I just left my favorite Diner here in Michigan where I went for breakfast and sat around and talked with a number of friends for a while.
    It was impromptu.
I was ordering pickup like others before me who just decided to sit down.
The owner (a friend) is a patriot. An immigrant American who knows communism first hand.
    America!

  25. Neo,
They opened the beaches yesterday in that area. This protest, which was last week – is actually a bit embarrassing to watch. My friends and I got a laugh out of it. [And the Confederate flag, really?]. But, sure, protests. I want to get back to work. Employer thinks otherwise. That’s more serious in my view.

Anyway, the beaches in Laguna were closed last month because the locals – not the protestors who do not live in Laguna – didn’t like the idea of thousands of people out of work flocking to the beach every day and spreading the virus. There concern Is very real. Laguna gets slammed with crowds. In normal times it’s fine but these days precaution is expected. If you lived right in that area you might be less than thrilled to have thousands of people hitting the beach at a time when we’re told to stay home. [Trump still has a National emergency in place].

The beaches are now open so long as people are moving. Was the wait really intolerable? I have a friend who is an ocean swimmer. He swims almost every day from March thru November. He remained patient. Not a big deal. He can swim again. I’m glad to have the trails back.

I notice the funny snipe by Griffin and Om. Yes, I do ride and walk by the beach – just like everyone else who likes to go outside in the area. To Om, I can only say I don’t understand the hate, guy. Anyway, I’m out every day – without a mask. I hate being cooped up and since we are allowed to walk I do. But I also refuse to put others in harm’s way in case I am asymptomatic. I do wear a mask at the market and I stay away from crowded locations. I live in a house with four others and would like them not to get sick. Freedom is important. But so is being a responsible citizen who can respect the rule of law. I would hope you would agree.

  26. Ed,
Agreed. Meaning specifically since the stay at home order is not mandatory I take full advantage of it. But as someone who is currently living in CA it’s not the tyranny that some want to make it out to be. It certainly might get awful if this goes through the summer – but at less than a month-and-a-half I think we’ll survive. It’s too easy to look back and say we never should have shut down. Even most Republicans agreed that was the right course of action. I think people will remain cautious as we learn to navigate this.

  27. This has a lot more to do with getting life in general back to normal. Sure, it’s the beach, but it will expand to getting businesses open again. After all, we can’t sustain 33million out of work.

My daughter lives in Maitland, FL (suburb of Orlando). She said the jazz club across the street from her house last night was back in full operation. Big crowd, no masks, no social distancing. People are ignoring the orders even more and more. Will this be a problem with the virus? My bet is “no”. Not just gut feeling. It’s now been over two weeks since Georgia starting opening up. There’s no evidence at all of a new wave of infections. In fact their cases continue to flatten and decrease. Since the median incubation time is 5 days, we should have started to see something happening there. Give it another week and if there’s no spike, then people are really going to let lose; and there’s nothing these damn governors will be able to do.

  28. physicsguy,

Maitland is a great area. I think I know the club.

Thanks for the update on Florida. I had been looking for that information online and couldn’t find it. Google kept serving up old news items from right before the shutdown, predicting disaster, but nothing current.

What do you know about Sweden. Most of the news I find online is negative, but it still doesn’t seem like their hospitals are overwhelmed. Hard to get actual data.

  29. Mask levels:
Trump supporter: wears mask if entering a store
Biden: wears mask walking on street to show support to Fascist governor
Bernie: wears mask while cycling, inside car, inside own home to show support for tyranny
AOC/DemSocialist: also wears mask while sleeping

OK, I won’t quit my day job, but there’s a kernel of truth there for a column or at least a meme….

  30. To Montage’s point: this entire exercise is idiotic and senseless from a medical and epidemiological point of view. The rituals of debasement we are being forced through are as effective at stopping viruses as wearing a cheesecloth raincoat in a thunderstorm, and just as absurd.

The whole point of the rituals is to force a formerly free people to take the bit into our mouths so we can be saddled and ridden. Controlled.

Totalitarians know that the way to break your spirit is to get you to agree that 2 + 2 = 5. Acceding to a lie is profoundly humiliating, and forces you to participate in evil to that degree, weakening your power to resist further humiliation and control.

I’ve also noticed the development, including some conservatives, of a “Do it to Julia!” reaction: “Do it to anyone over 60! not me!!!”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFYQq3Xi5uw

  31. Montage:

Hate? Nope, disgust with willing subservience to capricious diktats of your Governor and the pretense to speak of what “most Republicans” think. Progressives seem to know alot about what other people should and must think. It’s that “we” problem. Locals in the Laguna community want the beach only for the pure and uninfected while they cower inside? Is the virus going to linger in the air and contaminate the sand and the sea? It must be the special beach strain; the one that is UV proof. You mean they aren’t free to associate outside (safely, of course)? Maybe they should go for a ride their magic bicycle and look at the beach?

  32. Thanks, physicsguy! Still too soon to draw conclusions, except that the spike in Sweden has halted. And, of course, no comparisons on economic impact or other, non-COVID health issues.

  33. Om & Beverly

‘Willing subservience‘ Or ‘idiotic and senseless’ is to others following the guidelines established by statutes and laws and put into practice by representatives in government. Don’t like the current rules? Fine. Vote them out and replace them with those who share your views. The problem is you’d have to also vote out most Republicans. They too wear masks and in most cases follow the recommended guidelines. As I have noted before, hindsight is 2020. Every governor in the country and most politicians agreed to take this course of action. The reason is because safety always comes first. I would say it’s an easy choice but difficult to implement. This is how we test a society, a government and an economy. Few are happy with it but doing the exact opposite was an option few wanted to try.

[BTW Om I actually was kicked off a beach with two friends of mine in late March the first weekend after the order. Lifeguard was cool about it though.]

  34. Montage:

Sorry, but safety always doesn’t come first. What is the acceptable level of risk? Zero COVID-19 deaths and for how long? Good luck with that, and enjoy your confinement. Something about risks that are accepted and negotiated among the stakeholders. Is the Health Department elected? Are Executive Orders hashed out by elected representatives?

Sorry to rain on your parade but a few governors didn’t follow the herd. You live, effectively, in a one party state, that will not learn from it’s mistakes. Last to open first to bankruptcy. Enjoy.

You liked being rousted from the open air by a Life Guard? Some like the rough trade as others have noted.

  35. Montage:

    Think about this while on your magic bicycle;

Tesla is filing a lawsuit against Alameda County immediately. The unelected & ignorant “Interim Health Officer” of Alameda is acting contrary to the Governor, the President, our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!

  36. The reason that we have a Laguna Beach arrest at all.

I would expect that every one of the major world powers is employing every technical means they have at their disposal to surveil, monitor, and to keep track of what their enemies and potential enemies are doing.

Thus, in addition to any human intelligence—i.e. human sources—witting or unwitting, and agents on the ground, I would also expect them to be using technical means of gathering intelligence–things like the use of satellite imagery—visual, infrared, etc., the monitoring of radio, computer data, Internet, and cell phone traffic, and many other techniques that am pretty sure exist that I know nothing of.

So, for instance, there were reports of results from Wuhan that indicated that all of the crematories there were working non-stop, that there were massive numbers of funeral urns being delivered to that city, there were stories about long lines of family members waiting for hours outside of crematories waiting to pick up the ashes of their loved ones, and that there was evidence of new land being dug up to provide for burial spaces—all indications that the number of deaths from the Chinese Coronavirus in Wuhan were far higher than the Chinese Community Party authorities were admitting.

Now comes the news that cell phone usage data—or rather the absence of cell phone usage in the area—indicates that for quite some time in early and mid October 2019 the Wuhan Institute for Virology, including the roads in the area, was apparently shut down–keep in mind that Wuhan has a larger population than that of New York City, and is a very built up and congested area. *

This, it would seem to me, might indicate that authorities were trying to stop people from the area around the Institute from traveling anywhere else and, thus, trying to contain, to halt the escape and spread of the Chinese Coronavirus from that Institute.

If this supposition is correct, then, the virus did not first erupt in December, it first erupted in mid-October, or even earlier.

    * See https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8302739/Cellphone-location-data-analysis-Wuhan-virology-lab-suggests-hazardous-event-October-shutdown.html and https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2020/05/breaking-new-evidence-based-cell-phone-data-records-shows-shutdown-wuhan-virology-october-two-months-outbreak-video/

  37. P.S.–Looking at other articles on this cell phone data story, it appears to be a No, Yes, Maybe story.

Then, there is this report about Chinese President Xi personally calling WHO Director General Tedros on January 21st, and asking him not to report that the Chinese Cornoavirus is transmissible human to human, and not to declare the spread of the virus a Pandemic.*

    * See https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/bryan-preston/2020/05/10/german-intelligence-chinas-xi-asked-the-who-to-cover-up-coronavirus-n389565

  38. This would just be funny and infuriating, if it didn’t have such deadly consequences.

See the article linked below, about how the President of Tanzania, who is a chemist, was apparently skeptical of the accuracy of WHO Coronavirus tests, so he sent various samples from animals, plants, and even motor oil–labeled as being from various individuals, to WHO for testing for Coronavirus, and how the WHO test results showed that Paw Paws and goats were infected.

    See https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2020/05/president-tanzania-didnt-trust-sent-samples-sheep-goats-bunny-trees-fruit-car-oil-covid-testing-results/

  39. I want to link a story that picks up on what Gerard quoted when he posted the Beach Blanket Bingo party:
    http://americandigest.org/storming-the-beaches-in-laguna-beach/

They way they made her kneel in the sand is infuriating. These cops have no clue the fine line they are walking, and what happens when they cross it in front of hundreds. It’s amazing to me there was no violence.

It’s good thing Americans still trust the police, and see them as basically good, which they are. But this thing they were doing was stupid in the extreme, and damages their good name and the perception of legitimate authority in general. Let’s not do this anymore.

    And this happened in California.

    https://www.redstate.com/alexparker/2020/05/12/greg-anderson-seattle-port-police-coronavirus-liberty-constitutional-rights-fired-leave-terminated/

“You need to stand up for what’s right. If you’re part of a department or an agency that is…asking their officers or their deputies to impose on people’s rights and infringe on their freedoms, you need to step up and say, ‘No, that’s not me. That’s not what I signed up for, and that’s going against my oath.’ And if that costs you your job, so be it. At least you’ll be able to look at yourself in the mirror at night. I’ve already expressed this to my department. And luckily, for me, I come from a department that, I feel like, my chain of command shares my view. But I don’t care what department you’re part of, or what your chain of command thinks. You don’t get to trample on people’s liberty.”

That was just part of a long, heart-felt, and very American post.
