The UN: through the Looking Glass and beyond — 19 Comments

  1. The League of Nations was a bad idea in 1920 and the UN was a naive repeat of that bad idea in 1945 with all of the lofty goals and not taking into account the reality of the goals of various nations and world powers. I almost think it is time to resume empire building for the United States to exert responsible control over territories in this hemisphere and stop trying so hard for ‘world peace’.

  2. The UN ceased to even pretend to be a force for sanity after the untimely and suspicious death in 1961 of its second secretary general, Dag Hammarskjold.

Now it is not even a sick joke.

  3. Has there been any specification of the rights of women that Israel supposedly violates?
I’d sure like to know what they are…

  4. The voting tally makes interesting reading

YES: Andorra, Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Benin, Cambodia, China, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, India, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Luxembourg, Mali, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Paraguay, Philippines, South Korea, Russia, St. Vincent, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Yemen.

    NO: United States and Canada

ABSTAIN: Brazil, Cameroon, Germany, Jamaica, Mexico, Romania, Togo, Ukraine, and United Kingdom

The only thing that surprises me is I would have guessed Canada to be smack dab in the “for” list.

  5. I’m surprised the US was not included in the resolution since the Thomson Reuters Foundation published a poll of 550 experts in women’s studies about the most “dangerous” countries for women and the United States made the top ten “most dangerous countries in the world for women.”

Wouldn’t being unsafe for women be a violation of human rights? To say the US as more dangerous than war-torn countries is idiotic.

To say Israel is the only violator of women’s rights is asinine and proves conclusively the uselessness of 99% of the UN’s duties.

  6. eeyore – If the US is so dangerous, racist, etc etc etc : Why is the entire world trying to move here, and why are the Democrats deliberately enticing them to come to this horrible place?

  7. The UN has long since worn out its welcome.

As I understand it, we pay the largest percentage of the bill for this bloated, overpaid, bureaucratic monstrosity, this corruption, bloviation, and paperwork factory and, in return, it vilifies, interferes with, and condemns us.

Time for it to be gone, to set up shop in some other place, like India’s Calcutta, or somewhere in Somalia, or perhaps Antarctica.

The only reason I can see for the U.S. to continue membership in the UN is to keep an eye on it, and to thwart its inimical moves against us, and the peace and good order of the world.*

*During the run-up to the Korean War the old U.S.S.R. was boycotting the UN and, so, its permanent representative was refusing to show up for Security Council meetings.

It was only the fact that the U.S.S.R.’s representative to the Security Council was absent and, thus, not present to cast his veto, that enabled the Security Council to vote to authorize the Use of Force by the U.S.–acting for the UN– against North Korean military forces.

So, unfortunately, the lesson is not to disengage, for fear of what the UN will do if you are not present to protect your interests.

  8. So long as the UN was a well-behaved circus performer it served a function. Today, it is a 2-ton elephant running amok.

  9. For an entertaining 20 minutes watch our President eviscerate the UN renovation plans in 2005. His testimony starts at about 1:35:00. He all but calls it corrupt.

  10. Withdraw all funds & send them packing.
The UN hasn’t prevented any sort of conflict, oversees its own brand of oppression, and is a mouthpiece for the worst tyrants on earth. They gotta go.

  11. Until you figure out that the UN holds hostages and has to be relieved of them before it’s sent packing, US out of the UN talk will always just remain talk.

Map the UN system, figure out alternate ways to sort out international postage rules, international weather reporting cooperation, international internet lines, phone lines, etc. and it’ll be the end of the UN silliness. So long as sending a package to Canada or Romania runs through a UN rules making body, we’re going to be stuck with the system.

  12. Time for the United States to get out of the UN and kick them out of the country.

The UN is nothing more than geopolitical cover for tyrants.
