Can you imagine what the headlines would look like if a Republican had claimed on his/her tax returns that Person A was his/her spouse while still married to Person B?
But when Ms. Intersectionality does it, crickets.
At least, according to that article, the local affiliate in Minneapolis is taking some interest. But Omar isn’t answering.
I can’t even imagine what answer would suffice to exonerate her, so she’s probably best off keeping mum and hoping the national media will continue to ignore the issue. Actually, I can imagine her excuse, but someone like Nancy Pelosi would have to make it for her again, because it would be a difficult one for Omar to pull off by herself: that Omar “didn’t understand the full weight” of what she was doing.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune has determined that the tax fraud and immigration fraud charges against Omar are true.
The Strib realizes that these charges will damage the Minnesota DFL (aka the MN Democratic Party) in the 2020 election.
The timid article in today’s Star Tribune is the first step in getting her to resign before the 2020 elections.
That the national media is ignoring Omar’s criminality is, IMO of less importance than that the relevant State and Federal agencies have yet to announce an investigation into her activities.
I’ve lived and worked in and around Minneapolis my whole life. There is no way she can’t get past this with a well-scripted press conference. A few tears, a few references to adjusting to a new culture and it will all be forgotten by Labor Day.

On the surface, it looks like the latter. But just going from her wiki, it looks like the guy on the tax return is her first husband, with whom she has 3 kids. They divorced, she married another guy, but soon reconciled with the first husband…apparently without legally divorcing the 2nd one.
Wiki says she had another child with the Husband #1 at that time, so it sounds like the guy on the tax return was her spouse in every way except legally for a short period. They lived together had kids, etc. So they filed joint returns. Meh.

She later—in 2018—married that first person, the one she had previously claimed on tax returns as her husband when he was not and when she was actually married to someone else.
Her explanation is that she had a religious marriage and a religious divorce but not a legal one. That’s very nice, but it’s not what the IRS is interested in nor is it what the law is interested in. The IRS only allows common law filings in states that allow it, and Minnesota doesn’t allow it. Nor, of course, does it allow filing as a common law spouse with one person while actually legally married to another.

Also, her marriage certificate has been leaked. It appears not to have been a “religious” marriage at all, given that the officiator did not have a Muslim name, but a very Western-sounding one.
Ilhan Omar is a fraud. And she’s gotten away with it, so far. Probably not for much longer.

Manju – you obviously aren’t reading Power Line over the last few years – they covered all the points you raised, with pretty convincing evidence (pictures, documents, etc).
Also, most of the news articles on the tax returns scandal point out that Minnesota does not recognize Living Together as equivalent to Marriage (unlike states that do allow Common Law Marriages, and even those have rules about it which the IRS is not necessarily bound to pay attention to).

If Omar was married to one man by law — regardless of consanguinity — at the same time she was filing taxes jointly with the other one she committed tax fraud.
If her contracted husband was, in fact, her brother, then that marriage was illegal and void, which means she could possibly end that relationship (faith based divorce) without legally divorcing the contracted husband, but in no case in Minnesota can she claim the other guy as her legal husband just by living with him and having kids.

What is the big deal here. In law, a lie is only material if the information makes a difference in the outcome. Whether married to A or B, she is entitled to file a joint return and thus her tax outcome does not change.
