Further thoughts on the Pittsburgh shooting
Here are brief notes about the victims. All were over fifty, and most were well over fifty. I don’t know whether that represents a deliberate targeting of old people by the shooter, or whether they were merely the targets available to him in the room he entered.
It is terribly terribly tragic, an abomination.
There have been a host of shootings in houses of worship all around the world. This is for two reasons. People are often unarmed in such places. And hatred of certain religious groups exists and is often rabid. Jews are not the only ones so hated, but the hatred of Jews is very widespread and of great antiquity, and the reasons given are so various that it seems to be a very adaptable hatred.
Some people have expressed shock at the Pittsburgh shootings. I feel outraged but not at all shocked. There is plenty of precedent for shootings in houses of worship. And anti-Semitism being the phenomenon that it is, I am just surprised this sort of thing hasn’t happened more often.
That’s a terrible terrible thought. But certainly ever since 9/11 the writing has been on the wall. 9/11 was perpetrated by Muslim fanatics, and they are numerous. But there are fanatics all around and they take many forms, and it just takes one to commit a deed like this. A single person with a weapon can wreak havoc among the unarmed, as has been proven time and again.
Those who blame this on Trump are reprehensible, but their tactics were inevitable, too. To them Trump, who has been a great friend of Israel and the Jews, is the source of all evil. The fact that the shooter was a Trump-hater just means that Trump somehow triggered him (quite literally). The Resistance and NeverTrumpers can be quite creative in finding reasons to blame him for every awful thing that happens, and lack of logic is no obstacle.
I think it behooves everyone to learn more about defense against active shooter situations. Here’s an article that talks specifically about houses of worship. And here’s a guide for people who do not carry weapons, instructions on how to protect themselves nevertheless. I suggest reading both.

These were big studies and they all find there is no evidence that demonstrates the availability of guns has any measurable effect on rates of homicide, suicide, robbery, assault, rape or burglary.
Professor Wright later wrote an article , second thoughts on gun control, and he admitted that he thought it would be easy to show that more guns caused more crime and violence. It was patently obvious. He was surprised it didn’t turn out that way.

But many Western nations, including UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand have such laws and use them. Most states (I think most) do have laws permitting involuntary incarceration in certain circumstances that we can only hope are well-defined.
There are also laws about the rights of the incarcerated.

You are dangerously naive about the possibility of abuse of such laws in Western nations.
In the US at present, people can be committed to an institution, but only in relatively rare cases and only for a fairly short period with periodic reviews. That makes such laws hard to abuse. But if it is made easier to commit someone, and to do it for a long long time, then it is much easier to abuse such a law as well. And people will be tempted to do just that.

One of the many heartbreaking stories that emerged after the Tree of Life attack concerned 88-year-old Melvin Waxman, one of the victims. When the shooting started, the rabbi pushed three people, including Waxman, into a dark supply closet. When the shooting stopped (sadly, only temporarily) Waxman emerged from the closet, thinking it was over, only to be spotted and shot by the gunman. I was slightly surprised that this synagogue had had a shooting before and apparently opted against an armed presence of any sort. I was more surprised to see a number of Jews speaking on TV after the atrocity, all of the ones I saw, figuratively pounding their fists that they will not change their ways and arm their places of worship.
It also seems that many were probably saved by security training that involved exit awareness and making sure the exits were unlocked. Doors should be locked to ingress and unlocked to egress.

To those that claim that arming oneself doesn’t help, there was a shooting at a McDonalds two nights ago in Birmingham with a masked gunman firing 8 or 9 shots. Result: One dead gunman. Because he wasn’t expecting his victim to pull a handgun out of his waistband.
I’ve read dozens and dozens of these accounts over the last few years, and only two ended with a surviving perp and a dead defender. Could be selective journalism, but I doubt it.

The general rule is that you must know what is downrange of your target, and protect any people there.
Everyone misses at times. Or your bullet could go through your target. Cops in general have something like a 50% hit rate or worse. In NYC it’s something like a 38% hit rate because they are required to have an excessively stiff trigger to prevent the raft of negligent discharges that they used to have.

I’ve stated many times over the years here that, despite not being Jewish myself and (to my knowledge) having no Jewish relatives or ancestors, by a winding road the attitude of the left toward Judaism and toward Israel was one of two moral issues that made it impossible for me to be on the left (the other being their passive acceptance of the legitimacy of communism).
I’m not the kind of person – probably owing to an intellectual tendency to murk things up – who sees many moral issues as being obviously black and white, but Israel and communism were the two that first leapt out to me as such back in my formative years. Dershowitz, in fact, was a big influence on me, leading me to study in depth the wars of Israel, the circumstances of its founding, the so-called “peace process,” and several other more intricate historical matters.
I say all of this to preface the statement that, as other here have suggested, it is clear as the noonday sun that if we’re going to speak of a home for anti-semitism today, that home is on the left – even among many Jews on the left.

By the same token, this makes them easy to identify and so to condemn. As a result, it’s easier for the right to keep its chaff from becoming its wheat, simply because plain-speaking and saying what you mean is a value to them.
So, to be sure, anti-semitism has no intrinsic home in the partisan world. Nonetheless, distinctions are important. One distinction that has helped me cut through a lot of nonsense comes from a book I once read by the great French political philosopher Raymond Aron. In the preface to his case for the West, “In Defense of Decadent Europe,” he addresses the “everyone is corrupt and commits crimes” argument, which in the old days was used to excuse the crimes of communists. After admitting the platitude that every side has criminals, he writes:

A more general way of putting this is that there is a difference in kind between a group that has bad seeds – as every group does – and a group that erases the concept of a bad seed for itself, thereby giving evil-doing a constant co-signer in the heavens. One group commits crimes; the other has crime as a systematic principle.
Despite all of the left’s constant insistence on conservative dog-whistles, this is so much projection coming from the masters of unarticulated signaling. They’re obsessed with the notion, in fact, to the extent that they’ve now decided to base all of social science and political psychology upon it (unconscious bias, rooted in personality, rooted in biology, rooted in evolution).
Dog whistles! Are you kidding me? The *entire* thrust of the leftist establishment in academia, solidified around the social sciences, is to use the so-called scientific method to prove that their political opponents are inherently evil. The logic of this moves ineluctably toward obvious conclusions: you don’t argue with devils. You don’t form societies with chimps. You don’t treat lizard brains like cognitive equals.
Simply put, the left is currently engaging, enthusiastically, in a more sophisticated (less honest) form of the race science that once characterized Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, while maintaining publicly, with a straight face, that it is their *opponents* who are doing this. Wrap your heads around that. They’ve used race science to determine that whites and conservatives are inherently determined to think and act like race scientists, and since race science is evil, so is the white conservative devil. Since this is their stance, the only way to avoid condemning themselves is to lie about what they’re doing.
And according to this lie, we are supposed to believe that conservatives who just want to read and teach Homer, Aristotle, Shakespeare, and the Federalist are therefore bigoted cavemen, while leftists whose sole aim is to scientifically validate bigotry toward conservatives are tolerant, open-minded lovers of learning and liberty.
These are true blue dog whistles, as sinister as those of any old-time Stalinist giving the imprimatur of scientific truth to his urges to liquidate and consolidate.
In such an environment, atop a mountain of bullsh*t sprayed with ideological perfume and held to be ambrosial, how is the left supposed to detect its own crimes? How is the left supposed to see the aid and comfort it gives to the most committed group of anti-semites in the world, Islamists, when their “science” tells them that it is a mandate of world-history to ally with them against the white Christian devils?
Post-colonial theory is “scientific;” so Israel has to be a colonial outpost. Religious Judaism is as retrograde as evangelical Christianity; this is by nature, so there’s no choice but to eradicate it. Above all, the wisdom of the purveyors of this dangerous tripe is Established By Studies, the equivalent of a special revelation, and thus is beyond question. Question the word of God, why don’t you!

Just a few general observations brought on by this: anti Semitism as a problem in America has been greatly marginalized by the left over the part 20 years. This is the direct result of the need for the Democrats to achieve at least 91% of African American votes in general elections. Therefore, they must refrain from criticizing Farrakhan, so Jew hatred is no longer a big deal. Since the purveyors of our culture (entertainment, media, and so on) are appendages of the Democratic party, this position is constantly reinforced. When anti Semitism is commented on by our betters, it is only when it can be used to hurt Trump (for ex., the attacks on Ben Shapiro by the “alt-right,” and the telephone bomb threats which turned out to be bogus). It is entirely possible that this increasing numbness towards hostility against Jews was at least partially responsible for the actions of the gunman in Pittsburgh. Would he have done it anyway? We’ll never know unless he tells us. Responsibility? Look no further than the Democratic party; a blind eye towards anti Semitism is a deliberate policy on their part.

About the instruction, “you can’t miss.” I haven’t read his other stuff, but it is a definitive statement, and it is sort of the wrong instruction. What is near and beyond your line of fire? All of that is in danger whether you miss or not. If you fire and perfectly strike the center of mass, you can still kill someone behind the target.
You can be a relatively lousy shot and still safely and effectively defend yourself, if you pay attention to what’s downrange. And if you are so worried about not missing that you fail to fire, that can get you killed. On a completely different issue, events like the Pittsburgh massacre tend to bring out two types of responses: One is the gun grabbers with their newest version of “See, we told you so,” and the other is an announcement by people that they are now going to get a gun (see Roger Simon’s latest essay at PJmedia,com).
As to that second group let me make a brutally frank suggestion. “I’m getting a gun” is an easy thing to say and carrying it is an easy thing to do, but whether it comes to concealed carry or just keeping a firearm in the house, you should feel obliged to ask yourself two primally important questions. Those questions need to be asked now, in cool-headed intellectual daylight; now when you life, or, God forbid, your children’s lives are in no immediate danger; now, before you even own that gun.
The questions are: Can I actually see myself killing another human being if my own life is in danger? Am I willing to be trained to do so?
We are so inured to the peace of western civilization that such confrontation is not a natural act for us, thus, we all need training; even the young men sent to Europe and the Pacific in the 1940s needed to be trained to kill an enemy to protect their own lives. So if the answer is “not sure” (which is, in truth what most of us answer) then get some training first. Attendance at a concealed carry self-defense course and a gun safety course will help lead you to your answer.
If that answer is “No” then you might consider passing on gun ownership. The worst time to find out you can’t follow through is when your life is in danger and you’re pointing a firearm at your attacker’s face, because then your gun ownership has done nothing more than provided your assailant with more firepower and endangered you even more. Owning a firearm will not save your life only using it when you must will do that and the time to know if you can do so is long before you ever need to.

The other question about that campaign ad is whether the potential Trump voters at whom it was aimed would realize that some of those faces were Jewish faces. The faces I saw most prominently were the Clintons and Obama, against whose policies Trump was running. Yes, George Soros is Jewish by ancestry. I’m not aware that he is observantly Jewish. As David Goldman writes, large numbers of Jews who are “Orthodox” to some degree (i.e., make some attempt to follow kosher and other laws) tend towards free-market economics and conservative social mores.

Some 30,000 inmates died in Sachsenhausen from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition, pneumonia, etc. due to the poor living conditions.
Many were executed or died as the result of brutal medical experimentation.
Sachsenhausen female guards included Ilse Koch, and later Hilde Schlusser. Anna Klein is also noted for her presence at the camp.
Ilse Koch: The wife of Karl-Otto Koch commandant of the Nazi concentration camps Buchenwald (1937–1941) and Majdanek (1941–1943). In 1947, she became one of the first prominent Nazis tried by the U.S. military.
Anna Friederike Mathilde Klein: was a German concentration camp guard who was chief warden at the Ravensbrück concentration camp

That’s not true, it’s actually the opposite. There was a large scale, but clandestine, rescue effort called the Brichah, the Exodus. Supposedly it’s not secret anymore. The camps in the American zone were used as waystations. It’s more complicated of course,
